I was hopin' to keep my age a secret  Often feels on Xbox Live everyone was born in the '90s :(
Even speaking with people in their mid 20s irl now, it feels like I have nothing in common with them, economically, culturally, travel-wise etc.
The world sure did change in the last ten years :?

Heh, well I remember reading this forum in like 2001, and there were people then saying they were in their 40s, and talking about the Galaga/Sinistar era.
I'll tell you something else too: I have a boxed Rancor in the loft, and not some Hasbro '90s reissue job, but the Kenner '83 original.

Interesting that the guys in their early 20s are saying it was Ikaruga that sucked them in. For me, it was largely another Dreamcast game: Gunbird2, although I remember magazines in the early '90s covering stuff like Thunderforce, Hellfire and Parodius.

What's all this 'old' business? I'm 31 and feel 21. I got years of gaming experience over these kids, enjoyed arcade, 8 and 16bit gaming in its heyday, was right in the heart of the import boom, hit Japan when games were still cheap as hell and it hadn't turned completely gay. I don't see a problem tbh, us 30 somethings had it good. :)

Just stop for a moment and think if you discovered gaming in the PlayStation era! :puke:

I dunno. When I started gaming it was the Mega Drive era and I was too young to appreciate it. But around the late 90's the PlayStation really started to blossom. Vagrant Story, Front Mission 3, Ghost In The Shell, Silent Hill, Grandia, Suikoden II, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy IX, Ridge Racer Type 4, PaRappa The Rapper, Star Ocean 2... I think this is an era worth reminiscing about :D I do think if I'd had a US SNES instead of a PAL Mega Drive, things would be different though...

I definitely wouldn't want to be 12 at the moment though.

People will always fondly reminisce their childhood, but in gaming terms, especially seeing how it's turned out today, I wouldn't give up that extra decade for anything. Although I dabbled with Atari, Spectrum and C64, the 8 and 16bit console generation and the arcades of the late 80's & 90's remain dearest to my heart.

Folding to the hype, I sold up my entire Super Nintendo and MD collections for a PSX with Ridge Racer, Jumping Flash and Tekken in '96. At the time I couldn't put my finger on it, but it felt like I'd committed a murder.

I've been making up for it ever since! :)

More years mean less reactions and dexterity. I'm starting to notice that at 27, so I guess at 35-40 it might make playing games in this genre harder.

I eat games for breakfast today I used to struggle with as a kid. I'm at my peak. ;)

Definitely. When I was a sprog I was shit at games. If I completed any, it was simply because I had the time to devote hours every day to something like Toy Story on the Mega Drive. The other day I managed to clear Mushihimesama Original with w-shot and a broken screen so the bullets were essentially invisible.

It's disheartening to look at consoles today. The Wii had some interesting games with the Marios and Zeldas and No More Heroes and Sin & Punishment 2. The Xbox 360 has Dark Souls, Vanquish and the Cave games (but they're not console games so it's kind of moot). The PlayStation 3 has, uh, Demon's Souls and Vanquish. Consoles really are boring this gen. Thank god for the DS/3DS bringing us non-teenage gamers a more rounded gaming experience!

31. Funny how people mention that they're a lot better at playing video games than when they were kids, going back to a lot of the games I played as a kid I've recently found out as well that this is true. Couple of years ago my oldest buddy and I pulled out ye olde c64 and played Yie Ar Kung Fu; when we were kids, we were lucky to get to the chain guy. Now, we stopped playing after a couple of hours when we were fairly sure that we could go on looping the game indefinitely and after we'd beaten Blues perfect.

What I've discovered is that I never really was good at playing video games

40, 41 at the end of July. I've been in the game for a long time, but I'm not a hard-core nut job about shmups, I wouldn't say. I really like them, but I can be pretty picky.

I'm 39 in May. If I didn't have kids, I'd be playing shmups all day everyday.

Hi fellas.

I am going to turn 50 this november. First arcade shooter was in 1974. It was a p-40 flying tiger game where you shot down japanese bombers and every now and then zeroes would swoop in on you. The inside of the cabinet was hollow. the planes where on wires and would light up and explosions sounds would be made. Cant remember the name of it. It was pretty fun for the times. As far as reflexes, ya, I am sure they are not as quick as they used to be, but I have found practice does make a difference even at this age(muscle memory). Gradius on the NES was my first real shooter luv. Discovered verts and at first did not like as well as horis. Now verts are my favorite. The thread on how to practice has really helped and I have been able to 1cc a few games, but only one easy. I have been working on normal difficulties and have seen improvement in my skills. Don't know if I will ever be able to 1cc on normal but I ain't going to give up trying.
