If you ever need a companion, please let me know - I am so down for doing this. One of the things I've been wanting to do while I'm here - along with visit one of those abandoned amusement parks.

I don't know of any spooky abandoned amusement parks (are they anything like the movie Carnival of Souls?), but the suicide forest is about an hour or so north from where I live. You could take a bus or the shink to Fuji one weekend morning and we could go from there. I went hiking there in November and took a video of it. I've since learned of even better places to go hiking.

Overall I very much enjoy living here, and am even planning to buy property at the moment.

little update from me after moving:

Malta (3 month here so far)
+cool weather but scared by summer's high temperatures
+sea everywhere it's an island ldo
+one of top european spots for scuba diving
+cheap rents (got double bedroom penthouse with sea view and 2 massives terrace for 500e month all included internet too)
+high speed internet (i have 30mbs fiber 18e month)
+girls dress like sluts
+slow life its an island here
+cheap cigarettes
+cheap alcool and lot of bars
+cats everywhere,people breed them and cats are like cows in india
+it's like far west here,borderline to no rules

-expensive food,its an island they import a lot
-people put trash on the street i guess its smelly in summer
-bars are tourists bars and music is usually bad
-food is special,not very subtle and pizzas not so great
-maltese people,they don't do much but they're always busy
-scandalous public transport,standard to wait 2h for the bus
-wind all the time it gets on your nerves (heard it calm down in summer)
-cats everywhere
-need a driving license even for 50cc scooter but...
-maniacal drivers,even in bus I'm scared

overall I'm enjoying it so far even though it has a very similar feeling to where I come from and I feel a bit too much home(would like to go to radically different culture).
this is a place with plenty of business opportunity but it's very messy.

Pros:
+Nice and quiet.
+Pretty much everything you need is here. Being near some cities is nice if you have to go elsewhere to get something and/or kill time.
+Price of gas. I find it asinine that it's 40 cents higher in VA

Cons:

-No good arcades around here if you consider lack of shmups bad
-Despite the good roads and little traffic, it seems people around here don't know how to drive. Even my cousin who lives in Boston right now agrees, and that's saying something.

Glasgow, Scotland


Lived here all my life.

Pros
Friendly folk mostly in Scotland, except if your from England. For the most part its a centuries old rivalry and has at least moved on from the William Wallace Braveheart depictions.
Beautiful scenery, stunning glens, lochs and mountains. Not the biggest mountains, but they inspire awe from most people that see them.
Glasgow has some amazing buildings, take the time to lift your eyes from street level to look upwards in the city centre and you'll most likely to see some amazing architecture or statues of famous, but forgotten people. (keep an eye on your wallet mind when you do this).

Cons

Large number of feral youths- otherwise known as neds- they grow up and turn into Jakeys.
For the most part, you can usually fend off an altercation with a ned with an upbeat, friendly 'awright mate' -but they tend to run in packs, like wee dugs (dogs), so they're best avoided.
I tend to be reminded of the game 'Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl' when I go for a walk down Argyll Street, towards Trongate, due to the large number of mutants you see.

Keep in mind that gas tax is used in VA to fund things...important things I'm sure. Also just a good way to remind people not to use muscle cars and humvees on the daily commute

Currently in Stockholm, Sweden.

Sweden has a good socio-political system, although its slowness in some aspects really gets on my nerves, at times.
I filed my taxes in 5 minutes, and had to wait two weeks to change my address, and another week to get the right address in the system.
Aside an initial period of stress, I am finding the society to be fair, and very inclusive.
My wife is covered by free health care, unemployment salary if her monthly income as a free-lance is not enough, and several other citizens' rights (and she's not a EU citizen).
I do not pay that much taxes (27%), even, and I would say that it is money well spent.
My job is now ok, and I will stay another 10-14 months without too many problems, which is a success, career-wise.
Good food is somewhat expensive, but we can afford it easily.
Restaurants are ok-ish, too, and there is a good variety.
Several museums and a vibrant intellectual scene help, too.
I would eagerly avoid the cold and a second God Yul, but for the rest I cannot complain.
Cons...a few, but whatever. For instance, no time to meet the other Swedes, sorry boys
...and swedish students seem too lazy. Like any other BA student in the world.

Besides, elk and moose meat are delicious.


I will not remain here, but it has been a very good experience so far.

+ Very fun city. People don't take life too seriously here.
+ Only Canadian city worth visiting for the food besides Vancouver's pacific dishes (imo of course).
+ Rent is cheaper than some smaller cities
+ Tuition is around $2,000/yr and comes with generous grants (for now).
+ Great beer drinking culture, with decent breweries
+ A nice retreat from boring protestant Anglo culture
+ Very pro cycling, with many bike lanes made safe from traffic and parked cars.

- TAXES! Hope you have lube.
- Winter can be a 5 month bitch
- Caveman politicians pushing heavy handed language laws (see. Pastagate)
- Don't expect to find even a mediocre job if you don't speak french
- You might be crushed by falling concrete
- Euro style driving where everyone is apparently in an F1 race
- St Patrick's day parade will make you ashamed to be Irish
- Expect to have your day plans put on hold by a massive protest
