Lord of the Rings Trilogy on Blue Ray.

Due to the sheer volume, it is hard to block off the time to watch these, but I am glad I did. Will try to do it once every couple of years. $45 for the set off of Amazon. Bargain. Hopefully one day I can enjoy them with my son.

Got on the "Blitz" bandwagon. Very solid. Although I'll never look at Tommy Carcetti the same way again.

Checked out the cool and fascinating thriller/supense flick known as "Red Lights" that delves into the world of strange phenomena (like the ability to bend metal spoons without touching them, leviation, operating on a person without the need for surgical tools with just one's bare hands, etc.) The ending sure is quite a stunner as I surely didn't see it coming. And in the name of science trying to prove or disprove the phenomena to achieve them with different recording mediums to prove whether it's real or just some slick "under the table" sleight of hand type of deal. The name of Uri Gellar will come to mind when viewing this particular film indeed.

Conan the Destroyer

Image

Hell yeah, more of the same. Not directed with quite the sensitivity of the original, with clunkier acting and a little too much dialogue for its mostly non-actors to handle, but certainly with a script that has an even greater scope for "high adventure", packing in even more sorcery and... adventuring.

You get the feeling this is the more Hollywood of the two, but it's still got bags of charm and marvellous locations. I liked the ensemble vibe and Mako got a little more airtime (wizard duelz, awesome!).

Certainly not made with the same iron hand as its predecessor and summarily not as refined (unconvincing monsters and too much pointless humour) but damn good adventuring nonetheless. I loved the mirror fight, that one's totally cool.

How's Red Sonja then, worth watching? I heard it's dreadful? It's the only one I never saw as a kid, so have no knowledge of whatsoever.

Yes, I watched both The Last Starfighter and Conan The Destroyer as a double feature back in 1984...I certainly got my money's worth for a mere $2.50 bargin matinee back in the day. Such modern-day double features are such a rarity these days at the local movie grindhouse.

As for Red Sonja, based on the ye olde Marvel comics title of the same name, it was a fun and mindless romp with the likes of actress Bridgette Nelsen.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The thing that Conan the Barbarian got right that absolutely none of its copycats accomplished (Including Conan the Destroyer) is not playing for camp. It's like if "The Dark Knight" had the 60s Batman movie as a direct sequel.

Although Conan the Destroyer does get points for including THE best dating advice for women ever put on film: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WPkhh5JytYE

Not to mention that ol' Arnie expressed interest in doing a proper third Conan sequel flick is something to look forward to. Will they treat it with respect on this 3rd outing or not? After watching the ending of Conan The Destroyer, it leads the audience in anticipation for more Conan sequels down the road.

Blue Thunder film Factoid:

The director of the famed 1983 action/high-tech thriller of Blue Thunder mentioned that all the helicopter scenes were shot in the Los Angeles area on early Sunday mornings as not to disturb the general population during the weekdays. Of course, nowdays, such live-action filming of helicopters would be replaced with cheaper CG EFX instead.

Well now he's in perfect physical condition to play the creaky old leathery bearded Conan sitting on the throne with his chin on his fist trying to remember the last time he had an erection.

^ Thunderdome, aka the superfluous remake of The Road Warrior. I still dig, although it cannot even be compared to the other two Max films.

Red Sonja is good fun. Arnold isn't Conan, but pretty much is anyway. Awesome Morricone score that I like to frequently play at work. A fun sword/sorcery romp, but you're better off with the two Conans, really.

Ooh, Morricone. I'll get around to it. I'm going to take a brief hiatus from my fantasy movie expedition and watch Raiders of The Lost Ark. It's been a while.

Thunderdome is great at the beginning, trash in the middle, with a small uplift at the finale. Not a patch on Road Warrior.

Looper. The script is several notches smarter than the typical Hollywood dross, but I've got mixed feelings about this movie. By making the morality increasingly muddy throughout and repeatedly redefining which characters the viewer is supposed to be sympathetic towards, the climax didn't have the emotional punch it needed. Looper posits a world full of cunts, where everyone has a tragic backstory, and circumstance makes some people bigger cunts than others. As a result, virtually every character was qualified to become Noble Sacrifice Guy, and the writer's final decision on who deserves a happy ending feels arbitrary.

Ink. The film is essentially an adult take on Labyrinth, with an interesting mythos. The plot feels thin at first, but manages to pull itself together. For an indie movie with no financing, it's an impressive achievement. The gritty, lo-fi effects and grungy locations work to its benefit, giving its world of nightmare-inducing Incubi a suitably creepy atmosphere, but I can't help wondering how much more impressive it could have looked if some studio had just invested in it. As it stands, the crew pull every trick in the book to keep it from looking like a zero budget movie. The resulting use of heavy post-processing has mixed results. Half the time the movie presents impressive sequences, but it strays into the cinematography of a music video or shampoo commercial at times.

Watched Inception last night, and it was a OK movie, but all the praise it got, and all my friends telling me it was a complex sci-fi movie.
I think it's average, some fun ideas, action, but tries way to much in the Dream within a dream that is within a dream. The movie is dream? Is DiCaprio acting within the dream or is it just alittle bit of overacting.

I think the best thing out of Inception is that it got Tom Hardy recognition... a close 2nd is seeing a Japanese person actually act. As a long term resident, I can't put into words how fucking rare that is!

It's a fun movie. I can't take it seriously, but it has neat setpieces and good action, and that's all I really wanted. Hell, we barely get a reason for why the whole thing has to take place, but hey. If you try to put meaning into the film, you'll come out disappointed.

And I was thinking "man, if licensed games didn't suck so much, I wish there was a game based off of it" the whole damn time watching it. There's fair bit of potential there [although the game would be awfully short].
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Exactly null, perfect decent action movie with alittle more story. I did enjoy it. But it way to hyped and to high rating.
But seems like all the big movies get that way, everybody hype Dark Knight Rises, but in fact the movie sucks so hard compared to The Dark Knight.
Just hope people would think before they rate movies, also rate with your own opinion and not just follow all the hip people.

Cherry 2000 - 8/10

Randomly saw this come up on Netflix tonight. Proper B movie fun - man ventures into a post apocalyptic wasteland to find a replacement android wife. Sadly I've found it's not out on Blu-Ray. Yet.

V/H/S - 5/10

Saw this a few nights ago on PPV, I get what it's trying to do, and it sort of pulled some of it off. Some people you'll immediately hate, break into a house to steal a VHS tape, and discover a stash of strange films, some of which you get to see. Problems: the overriding story needed not to be done in the 'found footage' style - it just becomes overwhelming, some of the acting was pitiful, arguably the best of the footage segments is shown first, and the weakest last. Of course the day after I watched it, a late Christmas present arrived from the in-laws. You can guess what it was.

HP Deathly hallows 2

I try to like this shit but it goes on and on. If you blink you miss something and some of it just seems to be made up as it goes along. I'm still trying to figure out how they worked out the snake tooth kills the Hall flux things. The problem with the whole movie set is that I find it all so forgetful. I think when it comes to HP you need to remember quite a lot. I watched all the movies over a year though, so don't shoot me.

I watched the copy of Dragonslayer that I had ordered, last night.

All in all, it was a decent fantasy flick, and I like the Industrial Lights and Magic Dragon (which looked fabulous), and even the little bit of blood when the baby dragons went ham on that one chick. Risky for a PG movie, you could say.

Peter MacNicol (or whatever his name is) still had a weak performance, and the bad guy (a Fat dude with a Jewfro) still was entertaining in how much of a chode he was for absolutely no reason, but all in all, it was a fun little film.

Excalibur was shipped to my parents' address, so I'll have to wait until the weekend to see that one. Maybe Blue Thunder will be next!

Watched the Scream trilogy. Don't know how I managed to avoid watching these in junior high. Wasn't expecting them to be genre send-ups - is it coincidence that all decent horror movies these days are send-ups? All in all, they're pretty good. They don't go as far and aren't as good as Slither or Cabin in the Woods, but well worth watching. David Arquette is priceless.

Seven Psychopaths. Awful. Horribly paced and acted, and while at first it isn't that bad it soon degenerates into a stupid barrage of *wink*wink* look at my clever self-referential jokes. A shame because I really liked In Bruges and Six Shooter.

You don't need to, I've been as impressed with Japan's lack of acting ability as their inability to make credible film: although the two issues do kind of compliment each other.

Watanabe can and does act, and I like him, although I don't feel he has a great deal of range - but the same can be said of most of Hollywood tbh.

He's light years ahead of Hiroyuki Sanada, if it means anything, that guy manages to conjure all the emotion of a wooden plank.

Yeah, probably not, but he carries himself well. Did you see Letters from Iwojima? Real uplifting film there.

Patlabor 2

Went w/ scrilla4rilla tonight and watched it raw on the big screen. I saw this when it was first released to LD in probably late 1994. As such, remember none of it. Subtitles would have helped, but I figured most of it out. Some of the conversations between the lazy eyed guy (aramaki?) and Gotou got a little abstract. The fundamental stuff I got... the crazy attention to detail about the terrorist attacks went over my head. Nonetheless, enjoyable. Something I never really appreciated but can now, was the recreation of a lot of parts of town - and not necessarily iconic ones. The other thing is recreation of the feel of winter in Tokyo. Most of the interior of the buildings simply felt cold. Until you freeze your balls off in a Japanese home, this is really hard to pick up on.

Soundtrack isn't exactly timeless, but better than most shit from the 90's. Great flick -- definitely worth purchasing.

I've just watched Songs From The Second Floor, which had me awe struck, slightly unsettled, and in fits of giggles at time. As pretentious art wanker movies go, it was brilliantly silly - a wonderful film.

I also saw Django Unchained - pretty pleased Django and I share surnames.

And I forgot to post that a few weeks back I went to the premier of V/H/S in the UK. They set it up in faux 1980s video rental shop, and it was a really well done night. The movie though? Aside from really liking the last two short stories (V/H/S combines five shorts and a wrap-around story), most of it felt a bit crappy, mainly through a feeling it was desparate to be sensational. Most of the shorts relied on being revolting to scare, rather than being anything much clever or, at the opposite end of the horror spectrum, fun.
