Once I turned 18, drinking, smoking, and managing to get inside bars became boring and mundane 8)

I'm 21. I don't drink, though.

41. If I didn't mention it already.

I am old enough that I could play the original space invaders in an arcade that has become a fitness centre.

Am I the oldest?

19! It was pretty surreal to read through the beginning of this thread and then realize all of those responses were from 8 years ago. Time is strange and scary.

1978 inside the house here, I'm 34.

Joined up here in early '09 (as you can see) but I'd been using the forum as a resource for about a year before that.

Ooh. Thread revivification, once more!

26 now. Sometimes I recollect the few instances I ran into STG in random arcade settings as a kid and being really happy to see that type of game... then trying it and getting wasted!

I think I can blame Contra (nes) partially for my love of the genre. There was also a Commando machine I used to play when I was a kid. But Raiden Fighters Jet did me in. Still, 5 years of adoration for the genre and there's still so much more to explore. >_>

Commando has to be defined as a Shoot-'Em-Up. It's a Run-And-Gun for sure, but it has a lot of the Shoot-'Em-Up elements, except for the forced-scroll (which some Shoot-'Em-Ups, like Galaga, do not seem to have as well) 8)

I'm turning 26 next week. And I've been only playing for a little over a year now with no shmup-achievements to speak of. :|
I already have the feeling that I'm too old for this, no kidding, and that in a couple of years I will be physically unable to play shmups and all playing and training will be wasted. That's the only thing that is crippling my motivation to go on. :(

I started playing these games seriously roughly at your age and I'm improving. We are not too old yet!

By the way, I'm 27.

25 here. Honestly surprised to see a fairly young crowd around here. Expected a lot more in their late 20s-early 30s at least.

Maybe a few years ago. Huge influx of youngsters in the last couple years, and most of the older lot stopped posting around the same time.

23 as of a month and a half ago.

And right now I can't imagine people bothering with the effort to calculate the averages without building/running a crawler to gather the numeric readings from each post. But that's probably just because of the selective laziness lens I always seem to see problems through, so.
