Informal Shmupping Challenge Thread Volume 1

Post by nimitz »

So I thought it would be good to have a constantly running informal "competition".

The idea is quite simple, every post you make has to have two screenshot/pictures, one with a score beating the score in the last post playing the same game and another screenshot of a score you *just made* for another game.

So the way it works is you look at what is the current game and the score to beat, you beat it and take a screenshot and then you play a credit or two of another game and then post both of those screens in your post (making sure no one beat you to it and already posted a new game).

Here are the main rules:

Code: Select all

-If no one has managed to beat a score for 48 hours (2 days) anyone can come in and post a score for another game so that the game can continue.

-Every time someone beats a score and post a new game he gets one point, you can update the score table to add your earned point when you post you two screenshots.

-If you realize someone has beaten the old score and posted a next game right before you did (even if your score is higher) please delete or edit out your post to avoid confusion. The first to beat the score wins.

-Please do not post superplay/WR-level scores, this will only bog down the game. The goal is to have beatable scores. They can still be decent scores though.

-Please make sure the new game you are about to post has not been played recently (say the last 4 pages of the thread)

-Games do not have to be in mame, they can be anything from x360 to atari 2600 free or commercial, this will help diversity. Just make sure there are at least a few other people on the forum that have access to it (no sdoj for example)

-The person who posted the last score/game cannot participate and beat his own score to post another game.

-You can have special rules when you post a new game, things like 1 life only, only using purple shot etc...

Edit: Turns out score posts only make the thread a little bland so instead of making another thread you can just discuss the current game here.

Usually this post should have two screenshots but since this is the first post, there's only one. The game/score to beat

Lets start with a really fun unknown shmup, Mad planets. You might want to bind your ship rotation to the L/R triggers of your pad, but the game can still be played while facing forward only.

Always love informal competitions like this. Mostly as an excuse to try out different games. :D

someone needs to post a counterstop of something, lol

Geez, Mad Planets is a weird game. It's kinda fun, but it's really crazy when stuff starts moving so erratically. No idea how you managed such a massive score, but kudos.

Special rule: you must enter the first Dark World portal you find in stage one, and remain in the Dark World for the entire game.

well that escalated quickly. I was all hyped up for Mad Planets! Could there be a "best of five" (or lowest of five since that seems to be the intention here...I think good players / F5 addicts will dominate this either way) rule or something before a game switch?

Seriously now. (I can read the score though; I got farther than I have before on a play - but only 51,XXXX.)

Goddammit ... I just got like my best score ever, like almost 2M, but because I have it set for free play, it doesn't show the high scores.

FML

Oh noes ... you mean 7,465,983 ... yeah no I can't beat that.

Very nice, I was wondering if anyone would be able to beat that guwange score on such "short" notice. But I guess we've got more good players around than I thought.

Radirgy: Any point in collecting the random items dropped by static enemies?

Also, anything over 50M in radirgy seems quite unlikely for a thread like this.

They worth a lot, but I'm not sure if their value is based on the multiplayer level.
If you want to score high, just kill everything X16.

What about doing this more interesting, if no one beat my score, I get an extra point

Radirgy is pretty fun once you get the "flow" down and can start recharging bombs before they wear off. Not sure I want to hook up the Wii again though ...

btw did the rules change from 72 hours to 120 hours?

DC/NAOMI emulation is iffy at best, especially for those of us not running Windows (though I think Zerst is running Windows, his computer also is not powerful enough to run DC/NAOMI emulators at full speed).

KAI got the score on an emulator. I think nullDC runs well on PCs from the Pentium 4-Athlon XP era.

This was my first credit in a long time, and Gain is by far the worst ship, or at least the most awkward.

Dimahoo - Must use Gain
