Recca bootleg for NES
Recca bootleg for NES
While I was watching a video from Mike Matei about NES bootleg cartidges I was surprised to see that one of these games was a NES bootleg release for Japan-only Famicom game Recca (start from 07:30) :

When I searched at Google about "Recca bootleg" some of the results show me some threads from this forum where they mention the bootleg release for Recca. But when I looked at eBay for this game I only found the original, japanese version. And that's weird because in eBay you can find many bootleg games (including the infamous SNES cartidge Secret of Mana 2 which is actually the fan-translation of Japan-only Seiken Densetsu 3).
So here are my question:
1) Is this bootleg for american NES, the european NES or it can be played at both regions?
2) How common is this release?
3) Are there any other NES bootleg releases for Famicom games? I talk about the actual NES, not the NES/Famicom console clones.

Re: Recca bootleg for NES
It's just a repro.
And a good one at that, if I might say.
I know of some people who got it and were pretty satisfied.

Re: Recca bootleg for NES
I wouldn't call them bootlegs. After all custom made NES carts are really nothing special, with games like SMB2 and many other japanese only releases are available all over the net from reputable sites like retrousb.com or nesreproductions.com .
The american Recca cart was a great release with a nicely designed box and manual and excellent print quality for all components (I fortunately got one). As far as I know Recca used US sac carts, so it would be a NTSC-only cart. But then again disabling the region lockout on NES units is a matter of seconds.
Recca is still available from many repro sites, but I think the "complete" one with box and manual is not available anymore.

Re: Recca bootleg for NES
Repros are just fancy bootlegs. The sellers are selling games that are not theirs to sell, and sometimes the company that actually owns the rights still offers legal ways to acquire said games.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Here you go. Funny you should mention this, just found this the other night.
Edit: Gah, sorry I just realized you were talking NES carts.

I have one. It was super easy. I just sent in a Gauntlet 2 and they turned it into a Recca.

1) I think NES games cross regions. The Retrousb site's descriptions specifically mention PAL compatibility and I doubt they've done anything special to the ROMs to make it so.Vetus wrote:So here are my question:

2) Most reproduction carts are made to order, and there are plenty of places that offer Recca for $35 or so. That's just for a bare cart; the boxed repro that people are talking about was made in limited quantities (I think 50?) and is no longer available for sale. It might be hard to find one for sale, since as Ghegs mentioned they're technically bootlegs and therefore are unlikely to show up on eBay or the Trading forum here.
3) Yes. Oh God, yes. Google around - it's seriously hard not to drop hundreds of dollars on Famicom games, fantranslated games, unreleased games, maybe even a few hacks. I own a few, and have found myself sitting with $250 of goods in a shopping cart trying to justify more purchases.

"Repro" is a bootleg you paid for (or would pay if you had any disposable dough).

Re: Recca bootleg for NES
Quite an obvious bootleg. Wasn't sold, was it? That's actually fraud (the seller doesn't say it's a bootleg and tries to pass it off as a real cart).Deca wrote:http://www.ebay.com/itm/Summer-Carnival ... 2c6bdc452c

Re: Recca bootleg for NES
Lot of these boots are multi carts with 4 games but the (fake) label only shows Recca .
Re: Recca bootleg for NES
If the cart uses an original CIC chip, it won't cross between NTSC and PAL. However, a while back a few of the NES/FC hackers figured out the code to it and developed a clone CIC with region switching, which is/was sold through RetroUSB.CStarFlare wrote: 1) I think NES games cross regions. Not sure. I was real suspicious as soon as I saw that price and that it was from Thailand, then looking at his other auctions removed any doubt haha.Friendly wrote:Quite an obvious bootleg. I'd like to think most people in the market for Recca would know better...So here's hoping it didn't?
