Samurai Champloo

Onto the third DVD now in this series - is anyone else digging it as much as me? Same guy as did Cowboy Bebop, and he's a damn genius.

Awesome piece of work, the fight scenes thus far rival Cowboy's best -- if not greater than Cowboy's shoot-outs. It's so fluid, and because when dealing with swordplay, you get up close and personal, making the moves look purty.

The music's catchy as hell too; like some old-school rap beat going on.

The humor's well-planned too, I loved it when Jin asked Mugen if he called him a little bitch. Whenever a samurai calls another samurai a little bitch, hilarity shall ensue...it is the way.

Overall, a lot better than their previous work (Wolf's Rain, which I thought was shit) but I've yet to judge it against Bebop, considering not all episodes in America have been released either.

I have the three shitty Scandinavian releases of this, and I have to say I think it's quite excellent. The second and third discs probably lack some swordfighting, but overall it's still highly enjoyable.

I'm not getting the rest until it's all out on R1 though. Long wait ahead for me ;)

I enjoyed it, but not as much as Bebop. The overall story, "Find the sun flower samurai", was kind of dull and stupid. I guess I didn't like the characters as much either. The music, humor and sword fighting are all very entertaining and I recommend the anime, it's just I don't think I'll ever watch it again.

Just watched episodes 13+14, two parter. The final scene in #14 is straight up in my top 10 anime scenes ever. Seriously well done, absolutely nailed me staring at the screen.

Watched this series many months ago via fansub. Definitely one of my favorites, and if you haven't seen the whole thing yet, I'm sure you'll like it. :) Great series.

i just finished watching the series. i can say without a doubt that it is the first and only anime i have ever seen that didn't leave me feeling pissed, ripped off, or dissapointed. a fantastic piece of work and probably one of the coolest shows of any kind that i've ever seen. miles ahead of cowboy bebop IMO.

Champloo (champ-lu):
from the local dialect of Okinawa, Japan meaning mixing or blending.

It is, a very strange name for an anime.

Bah, all anime/manga stuff has strange names. "Fooly Cooly?" "Neon Genesis Evangelion?" "Fruits Basket?" Heck, even "Cowboy Bebop" is kinda weird-sounding if you ask me, heh.

I had a copy of Newtype USA (anime and manga review magazine) where the creators talked a bit about the anime and why they made it a mishmash of different things. Here's the scan. ^_-

I've seen a few episodes so far, and I quite like it. I'm more sucked into Air and Tsukuyomi -Moon Phase- at the moment, though.

Nah, it kinda makes sense. The show is a mixture of feudal Japan and hip hop cultures.

Not all the storyline have been touched at the end of eepisodes 14, I am thinking there might be chance of a "second season" doing the rest of the story. I got the same feeling to the new anmine "Emma" too.

3rd season of "Full Metal Panic" are coming, cannot wait to watch that. :D

Bit confused?

Episode 14 is on volume 4 of the DVDs, and volume 5 is currently in the mail somewhere. Volume 6 is preorderable.

Just finished watching this tonight, and I must say that it was good through and through. The baseball episode was genius, and the 3-part finale was pretty rad. Not to spoil anything, but the main characters are pretty resilient. Overall, I liked CB better, but honestly, that's not saying much. Go Shinichiro.

Like many other anime series, $22 a disc is mostly what is stopping me. I suppose if I got cartoon network and could actually watch this, I might at least know if the discs are worth it.

US$22 a disc?!?! Wow that cost alot!!!

The whole serie of Samurai Champloo only costs me $26. D9 x2 + D5 x2 for about $6.5 per disc...

Got whole boxes of Anime DVDs at home, really want to get rid of some, but I really not quite sure the DVDs is official release or not (i.e. bootlegs). :? So I don't dare to sold those unwanted at eBay for fear custom officers appear at my door steps. :o May be I would be forced to throw the unwanted discs away as rubbish... :(

How about "Full Metal Panic"? It about a very serious soldier of a elite troop be sent to a high school as an undercover bodygruard of a teenage girl. This very soldier know nothiing but he trade... Very funny and action packed. Highly recommended.

Where is it that it can be had for so cheap? I have a region free player so I don't have to just buy the super expensive US versions.

Honestly, this is what stopped me with neo genesis evangelicon as well. It seems the only way to see it is to drop a minimum of $100. I wouldn't mind that so much if I'd seen more than one episode.

For instance, being the stupid Tezuka fan that I am, I'll gladly buy that Ultimate Kimba set coming out later this month for $90 or whatever, but it is some 52 episodes or so, remastered, etc. and seems well worth it (knowing I already like it...)

there are plenty of ebay pirates selling HK boxsets for cheaper than burning them yourself, nice quality too altho i can imagine anime fans get really upset about it (i know i do when it comes to videogames)..

thanx for the tips, ill check em out, keep it coming tho :)

I bought the NGE box set from Best Buy half a year ago for around $65.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp ... &id=291190

I guess the price has risen $10 since then, but it's still well worth the money.

You ought to get the platinum thinkpak collection. They really improved the picture and sound a lot in the platinum release.

http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com/dvd.cfm?itemID=ADV013231 ~ All 7 DVDs for about $53.00

I agree about anime being a rip off. There should be a minimum of 4 episodes per DVD and 5 episodes optimally. Paying $20 for 2 or 3 episodes is rediculous.

Yup. Best Buy lists it for $75. Amazon has it for over $100. What the hell?

The thinpak platinum collection is six discs. They've remastered the whole thing and removed all extras. The rebirth and resurrection episodes are included.

Except for Gantz and certain OVA releases you will ALWAYS get at least three episodes per disc.

Anime isn't a rip off. Go to CDJapan and check out the prices they pay in Japan. At least $50 per disc and sometimes there are only two episodes on each. And this is just TV anime. With OVAs, it's more or less always ONE episode per disc (from 25 to 50 minutes long, usually), and they cost at least as much as the TV discs. So they pay twice as much and get half as much, when you're looking at episode count exclusively, of course.
