RGB Scart Picture Not Showing- NTSC Genesis Model 2

Post by Endgame22 »

Hello, this is my first post here and to honest I do not know much about the rgb scart/modding scene. I'm hoping I can get some help from you guys.

I bought a Genesis model 2 rgb cable for my ntsc console from this ebay seller: http://www.ebay.ca/itm/110697672171?ssP ... 1497.l2649.

I have it hooked up to my Vp30 upscaler but I'm getting sync issues I think. I can't get a steady image, it just keeps flickering in and out. I can see some screen rolling as well. I'm not sure how I can fix this, or what may be wrong. My Saturn cable (from a different seller who doesn't have items on it's ebay store anymore) works perfectly with the upscaler.

Thanks.

welcome here on the board!

Did you try - as told via PM - unlocking the output refresh rate on the VP30 ?

The cable you got there is likely not a raw sync cable, but it uses composite video for sync. You can verify this. You're using a breakout Scart to RCA cable, right ? Connect the sync line to the yellow RCA input on the VP30 (instead of the white sync input) and switch the input to composite. If you get a picture, then the cable uses composite video for sync.

With the proper cable, the GEN2 can output pure sync. Might be worth a try to get another cable.

Hey, sorry late reply. So yes it is the setup you described.

I unlocked the refresh rate and I finally got an image, however it is dark and looks like it's missing white? I then plugged the composite cable in to the composite connection, then switched to Video input. The image looked less dark but still was off and missing white I think. There's also some vertical lines in the image.

I think it's worth getting a cable which uses the sync signal instead. The vertical bars (jailbars) will be gone to a certain degree as well with the new cable, but not completely. This is not a processor problem but a design problem of all Genesis units.

I'll return the cable I have I guess. Know where I can find a raw sync cable? Can't seem to find any on ebay.

Okay, so a weird thing happened. I received my Hama Scart 4 in 1 Switch box today, plugged it into the breakout cable setup to my upscaler and then plugged the genesis into that. The picture and colours looks normal now! I don't know how or why (the Switch box has a 75 ohm video conductor, that why? :/ lol)

glad to hear, even though it's a weird fix! You can still go for another cable if you find one to get rid of the remaining jailbars.

Yes, it is very weird. I talked to the seller of this cable I have and he said that they can make a raw sync cable by request, perhaps I'll do that.

So I'm confused about sync, I'm guessing that a composite sync is still rgb?

It's the same cable, the sync signal is just derived from another pin in the console's AV connector. In addition Genesis systems require a capacitor in line with the sync signal, which can be put on either side of the cable.

So depending on ones setup, either composite (csync?) or raw sync can be used. Raw will give me less jail bars?

yes, to fully remove them you have to do an internal mod, but using a cable which uses the proper sync signal, removes most of them already.

I see. Now the switchbox is showing a blurrier signal than just plugging system into breakout cable directly (tested with Saturn). Is this signal degradation normal with switch boxes?

unfortunately yes. Especially in the US it's hard to pick up a good one.

Except I bought mine from Germany and it's supposed to be a good one :-\ it looks okay, plugging directly to upscaler looks better though. I guess for recording footage I won't use the switchbox.
