Worst Raiden Game?

Post by lettuce »

Have recently got Raiden Legacy on the iPad and love it (damn shame R2 and DX aren't included :( ), I have also played Raiden 3 on the PSX too. But i was wondering what Raiden game was regarded to the be the worst and why?

The first Raiden is not so great, and my least favorite of the series that I've played so far. I owned the PCB for a bit, and I just didn't enjoy it that much and after a few weeks sold it on. My favorites are the "Fighters / JET" series. I hear that DX is a highpoint as well, but I haven't tried it yet.

The SNES port, sometimes called titled Raiden Trad. It's a bit choppy and missing half of stage 6 (recycles more space battles with no moon section, and even recycles the stage 2 boss).

Hell no!
The Mega Drive port is a very decent one. It doesn't loop but it has a CRAZY HARD extra 9th stage after the credits roll.

I love all the Raiden games, but 2 and 3 are by far the worst. Raiden 2 is too unforgiving, and the spread vulcan is underpowered. The only good things about it are the sound effects, music, and particle effects, which were improved in DX. Raiden 3 is just as bad, if not worse. The removal of the purple laser, cluster bombs, and only having 7 stages, I mean come on, really. Raiden 3's music also sucked, except for Stages 1 and 3, those were awesome. Stage 7's music is alright also. Raiden DX is by far the best game. It has the most in-depth scoring system, multiple courses, the best music, the most intricate detail in particle effects, and it fixed the underpowered vulcan from 2 by raising the damage slightly.

I've only really liked the Raiden Fighters games, the orginal Raiden is too dated, I've never played Raiden 2 or DX, and Raiden III and IV are okay I guess.

While we're on the subject of the worst, could someone also tell me what the best is, and which would be the best to start out for someone new to the franchise?

I haven't played much of Raiden, but I'm hoping to get into it.

Raiden DX is by far the best, it's not too hard, unless you play the expert course, but it can be frustrating at times. The Raiden Fighters games are good for beginners, if you are not playing for high scores, because the bullets are slower than in the older games.

None of them are anywhere below average, but I find the original Raiden to be oh so pointless considering how limited it feels in comparison to even Twin Cobra when Toaplan games had already evolved quite a bit in that time frame between the two.

Yes, even over Raiden Fighters Jet. DX is the only Raiden game that offers multiple courses, and the scoring system with the decaying point value medals, the measure of how risky you play, the measure of percentage of enemies destroyed, and the hidden secrets such as the Sol towers make this game the most interesting in terms of scoring.

I don't mean easiest or most forgiving, since I enjoy a good challenge, I mean more what's a good representation of the franchises overall quality.

Oh sorry about that. Then in that case it would be Raiden DX.

You're welcome, and while the PSX version has more options and unlockables, I recommend the actual PCB version; the original 1994 release, not the garbage 1996 "New" release, it has better sound and visuals, and the PSX version is not 100% true to the original arcade version, such as not having the same framerate as the original.

It really wouldn't be taking too many liberties to suggest that the "Raiden Fighters" games are an independent series which really isn't part of the core "Raiden" series. Yes, they feature the Raiden mk-II from Raiden II but they also feature the Judge Spear from Viper Phase 1 - these craft are an homage to the earlier Seibu Kaihatsu games. The first "Raiden Fighters" game was originally called "Gun Dogs" - it was renamed to "Raiden Fighters" to hitch a ride on the brand recognition of the "Raiden" series.

What were the differences between the PSX version of DX and the arcade version?? Due to DX not being emulated in MAME (will it ever be??...i doubt it) and not have a jamma system the PSX will be the only way for me to play it

Maybe the Atari port?

If we're going by ports the Atari is probably horribad. I didn't like the SNES port either.

Raiden II is just fine as part of the series thank you very much. DX is more like a Black Label version of 2 with some radical background alterations and mechanics modifications. You can still kill the first boss in ~5 seconds with autofire on 2 just as much as you can with DX, and even with aesthetics I'm inclined to not like the modifications to the lockon beam colour in DX when it hits something.

The arcade version has much better sound effects and music quality, it uses some different explosion sprites that are bigger and more detailed than the PSX version, there are higher amounts of shrapnel from destroyed enemies, there are some slightly different enemy positions, there are no gold radars in Mission Charlie (Expert Course), and it has a slightly slower framerate, which tends to make it slightly easier than the PSX version. Which Atari? The lynx one is extremely rare, but, as far as I know, it wasn't unreleased (I checked more info. Though it did get an official release from Telegames, the game is 90 percent complete. ouch). I heard good things about the Jaguar version back when it came out, but now I don't hear much good about it (looking at videos, it looks better than the DOS and SNES ones at least). The Lynx one doesn't sound too hot, but it's interesting how it offers tate.

For nostalgia, the first Raiden earns extra points from me as I pumped a lot of quarters into it in the arcade. Being the first game in the series though, it is a couple steps behind Fighters/JET. I still wouldn't mind owning a Raiden pcb though, once in awhile they show up on eBay for around $50 USD.

I like all Raiden games, but if I had to choose witch I feel is not so good as the others it would be Raiden 3. I like Raiden 3
it's a real good and fun game, but damn the ship is slow. No Raiden Fighter Jet slave!!!

I have a really hard time getting into anything outside of the Fighters series...though I probably ought to try DX for all of the praise it receives.

Agreed!
Both series have absolutely different vibes.

I for one prefer classic Raiden.
