Are we talking shmups on facebook as in games that are heavily integrated into facebook itself? For example, those farming games that spam everyone on your friend list with "gifts" and invite bullshit?

Actually, that's not too bad of an idea.

But only if a "blue wish resurrection plus" approach is taken instead of a "sine mora" one...

Edit: I mean this in a sense of "easier and maybe more aproachable" sense instead of an "utter crap" one. :P

Well, there's this, which looks pretty promising: https://www.facebook.com/groups/shmups/

People are talking about Cave games, PC Engine stuff, RayStorm, Border Down. I only see one Tohou post!

Facebook is a waste of life. Basically a scam to datamine all there is to know about you and make you watch personalized ads while spending valuable time with virtual "friends" (people you don't know and don't care about). As such, not interested. Don't have an account and refuse to get one.

One of those rare occasions where I agree wholeheartedly with Friendly.

Fuck Facebook. Evil company, can't be trusted, dangerous to have an account under your own name because employers are starting to use it more and more to vet applicants.

I don't disagree that they are an evil company whose goal is to data mine the shit out of its users (even though they still can't manage to sell me anything I'm interested in, even though they know every goddamn thing I like).

But anyway, I'd argue that any company that would want to log into your FB account (or 'friend' you) in order to vet you would probably view the absence of a FB account as cause for suspicion ("everyone else has one.. what's this guy hiding?"). It's stupid, just like the modern necessity of a credit card is stupid and intrusive, but there ya go. But I do respect not having one. That takes some determination these days-- though if your social life is already pretty settled, that makes it a much easier decision as well.

Some positive things about Facebook for me is that I've been able to network much better in local music and programmer scenes (no contest there), and find out about events I wouldn't have found out about otherwise.

I have no interest in playing STG's on Facebook (or on my phone for that matter). Life is too short to play inferior games on inferior platforms.

Facebook is no more of a waste of time than a forum, IRC, or any other facet of the interwebs. It's as shitty or useful as you want to make it. It is particularly amazing for small time artists/musicians/startups that would otherwise not have a voice. You can quite easily use a nickname if you're paranoid about your information being used (which it most likely already is by some other company anyway).

When you're applying for a job, simply lock down the account.

Because the Internet and Youtube did not exist before Facebook.

Just pointing out the obvious. I could honestly say that just about any facet of the interwebs (except for maybe me doing work directly) is a time suck. Do I really need to be reading about metaphysics on Wikipedia?

I mainly use FB to keep in touch with what was once the underground music scene, and to a lesser extent some other smaller communities. I post only a handful (I think 5 to date) photos of my son, and I generally don't dry my laundry out there. All ranting is general, and usually about something that should have attention drawn to it in the first place.

I have old friends on there as well, so I'm a mere fraction of the sick fuck I am here. It is a different paradigm than how most people use it, and some people close to me don't quite "get it". But, for me, it's a tool, and works. If I want to get acquaintances to come hear me DJ which happens very infrequently, it is perfect. If I ever wanted to take a hobby to something more of a side biz or maybe even profession (photography?) then it is the easiest platform to use and has the most exposure.

Necessary evil these days, IMHO. Social Media is, anyway... maybe not Facebook specifically.

The internet is a waste of life. Basically a scam to datamine all there is to know about you and make you watch spam while spending valuable time with virtual "friends" (people you don't know and don't care about). As such, not interested. We should all go back to using pen and paper via snail mail to send messages to people and get work done.

...and coincidentally here we all are...

I'm actually far more productive w/ the internet. Holy fuck, I don't see how programmers or technical people in general ever got shit done without Google. Definitely speeds up the job by an order of magnitude I would imagine.

You missed the point. I parodied Friendly's unfriendly post to point out that just as there's a bunch of anti-social folks here shitting on Facebook there's a bunch of anti-social folks shitting on subject x in exactly the same way, making their claims no more valid than that of a redneck making racist remarks "because I said so therefore I'm right".

Facebook, like Google, is a tool. If it's not a tool you'd like to use, don't use it. No need for yapping on about it like some Amish freak who hates technology, it makes you just a bit more difficult to take seriously.

I back all of this.

I also use it as a tool to relieve my neurotic inner-self. (see: Drunk thread)
