Dubstep Laser Garden: UPDATE 3/21/13

Post by Shmuppet »

NEW VERSION! Most recent dev log entries:
March 12th, 2013(3/12/2013):
Players will notice extra files included with the demo. Don't worry, this is just to make complex matters simpler for everybody. There will be maximum, 5 data files that will be included in the game's directory. As long as you don't tamper with them, the game will play just fine with no extra input. However the game now requires these files to work and function properly.

March 19th, 2013(3/19/2013):
Renamed the game's control functions. It's confusing to know exactly what everything does when setting the control scheme, so now all functions have been renamed to suit the actions of the player. For example, since the A button "shoots down" in the game, the A button function was simply named to shoots down in the regular input configuration menu. Any functions that aren't usable in the game will receive a "NOT USED" label. No excuses for not knowing the controls now! :)

Hello everyone!

I wanted to come up with an idea of an twin stick shoot 'em up with minimal visual design, that uses varied gameplay objectives to spice things up. The reason I wanted to make this game was because I wasn't satisfied with the current state of indie shooters of the twin stick variety today. Some of them were short, some were TOO simple, had overkill presentations(everything glowed/got in the way/didn't make sense), didn't do much in the way of interesting gameplay mechanics/had too many etc.

While that's not a bad thing for a lof of folks, I wanted something more my speed - fast, brutal, interactive, predictable, flexible, original, FUN! I've always been a fan of fast-paced arcade action games like Space Invaders/Galaga, but AAA developers are too content with re-releases and there are too few indie developers doing them [right]today.

I know it sounds pretentious, but have you ever wanted to make a game that you really like because no one can do it just the way YOU like it, and just play it all day? I know I do. That's because my gaming tastes have NEVER changed. I like simple, fun and challenging games. But all the devs out there are creating games for people whose tastes change like a girl changes clothes! So this is my first effort at creating a great twin stick shmup that caters to MY tastes. :)

Dubstep Laser Garden is a twin stick shoot 'em up, that allows incredible settings customization for players. The game's music will be... Take a guess, I'll wait. ;)

DUBSTEP! Yeah! Ok, so it's probably not the best choice for music, haha.

By the way, check out the dev log to find out about my thoughts on the game, mechanics and other implemented features! If you're confused about a feature, the development log will [most likely]answer your questions!

A download link is included, via FileDropper.
Q: WHY DID YOU CHOOSE FILEDROPPER?
Because there's no login required, either for downloaders or uploaders. Just click upload, choose your file, and BOOM! Downloaders will have to go through the usual processes like captchas however. Filedropper also offers easy to read download links.

HOW TO SETUP:
You must have WINRAR to unzip the file. Go to the link, and click the download link on the left side, enter the verification code and click the new link to download the file. Once downloaded, simply unzip the file and run the EXE. Basic controls are mapped to the keyboard by default.

The game is being programmed in Blitzmax. Very good to develop PC games with, especially if you're catering to Windows users. :) The great perk about it is that it's based on C, so it's very fast and perfect for custom built game engines using OpenGL. And since it allows access to the win32 API, I can make some pretty sweet GUI layouts, even if it takes forever. Gotta be careful though, Windows likes to complain a whole lot! You walk on egg shells every time you tinker with sensitive stuff.

And I don't know what 'bad' dubstep music is, I haven't heard any examples. If you can find one, I'd be happy to learn from it. I have an opinion of what 'good' dubstep is, and I will try to create tracks that fit that perception. Meaning no real high-pitched noises or highly irregular/variable bass tones. Trying to play it safe. :)

A new version has been uploaded! Unfortunately, I haven't had a whole lot of time to work on this like I used to. Will I stop development? No way! But real life work sure gets in the way! :(

But long story short, enemies now move around and score extend mechanics are in. I know everybody wants great graphics, but I'm more of a gameplay type of guy, so graphics will come eventually. Check out the dev log if you wanna know the full list of changes and additions. :)
