I haven't played Sine Mora, so this isn't a defence of that game, but don't pay attention to hardcore shmup fans. They don't know what they're talking about when it comes to their own genre as a rule. Take their opinions as seriously as you would take the opinions of a self-described anime fan on what is good anime.

I would recommend Strania: The Stella Machina above Sine Mora. Strania has a degree of finesse and execution about it that Sine Mora lacks. Ultimately, you want to play a game that is fun and competently-designed (Strania) as opposed to a game with a lot of spit-shine (and an interesting gimmick) masking some serious issues (Sine). If those issues were addressed, Sine Mora could have some serious staying power, but stuff like instant-kill pianos reek of developer arrogance and incompetence in the genre.

There's a large topic about it on this forum, if you don't mind sifting through some serious vitriol (not without merit) and shitty posts.

It's different but it can be fun. Download the trial and see for yourself, don't mind the shitposts.

I liked it, it's not horrible and you will not die as a result of having tried the demo. It's just not that great, either. There are better games for the same cash or slightly more. Why not buy Under Defeat HD, it's only £16.

tbh I like Strania just about as little as I like Sine Mora

We have a thread devoted to it but, jokes and all madness aside, it provides solid reasons on why we could say it's a damn pretty looking game but, as a shmup, one big disappointment:

The Killer Piano is one of the most offensive btw. But there are things like the unlimited autofire, the power up hunting if you get hit (and you will as the collision detection is just not too good) and the time mechanic itself can lead you to a dead end before you even realize about it.

Once you get past the graphics wow effect (and it does look very good on PC), you notice its weaknesses.

I was kinda taking the game seriously until I noticed that the timer still decreases at regular speed while you're happily blasting away in your slowed universe, which in turn makes your imminent sudden death occur about 20 years sooner and makes Insane mode actually viable.
