Devil May Cry 5

Post by Mischief Maker »

More like Devil May Cry 2 part 2, amiright?

In case you were unaware, DMC5 was farmed out to Ninja Theory, makers of such classics as Heavenly Sword. Their director is this guy:

Worse than farming out the Star Trek franchise to the same chuckleheads who wrote the screenplay for Michael Bay's Transformers?

Good-to-great reviews from western critics who love easy, cinematic games probably means that this will be the future of the series.

To be fair, DMC was garbage by 4. Never been a fan of the series, 2D beat'em ups all the way.

At least DMC4`s combat, when isolated from the rest of the game, was really, really good. For this reason, the Bloody Palace was the only part of DMC4 truly worth playing, but from what I understand, DmC doesn`t have it included(maybe later in a DLC, ha ha).

So how does it play though? Who cares what Dante looks like.

(watches a few vids) Hmm ... so you can slop your way though levels getting hit left and right and barely getting any good combos in, and still get a SSS rating after completing a level? What is this, elementary school physical education? Everyone gets a medal, regardless of how much you suck, YAY!

What gets me is all the reviewers talking about the game's "mature and gripping" narrative, which is just sort of a bland rip-off of John Carpenter's They Live. Laced with some really forced profanity.

At this point you can not *literally can not* expect anything better from Capcom.

I've never been a big DMC fan either (I don't like how most enemies pose little-to-no threat, they're just combo fodder), but it does suck to see another respectable action series fall off like this. Platinum is the only decent developer left making games in this genre. :|

DMC1 is more interesting than the others in this respect IMO, you don't have long combos and the enemy design is interesting (+ most have some sort of weakness you can use to kill them quick which takes some setting up)

This is not DMC5.

It is a spinoff/alternate universe/something of that nature.

And if there were any justice in the world, this game would not even exist. I refuse to believe there are more than four DMC games until Capcom stops being stupid (which'll probably be never, in which case I hope Capcom dies).

I've only played the demo, and thought it was enjoyable. Didn't realize how attached people were to the series. Maybe they should have called it something else--with so much emphasis on the devil/angel grabs, it easily could have been a bionic command game. I agree the attitude of the game feels very forced. I could have enjoyed the same game mechanics with a cartoon t-rex with robo-arms. Visually the city feels really intersting. I don't like the over-the-top praise, nor do I like the over-the-top scorn. I am suspicious there is a good game in here. I'm gonna have to wait for the dust to settle and see if this is something I want to try out.

I didn't like DMC5 at all. Dante's look is more than enough to turn me off(I really liked Dante's old look). Weird haircut, anorexic, pot-smoking(I know he doesn't, but the guy looks like a HS rebel who failed auditions for The Breakfast Club :D ) emo teen. And people thought a silver-haired, missile riding, pizza-eating beefcake was ridiculous.

The game was too easy for me too. I think DMC4 was the best game in the series difficulty wise, in that it wasn't forgiving at all.

I think it looks quite sweet. I was planning on getting this, but I'm adopting a wait and see attitude because of the quality of the PS3 version. So many games run better on the 360 that I'm seriously considering getting a 360 and avoid all the sub-par PS3 versions. Just waiting to see how Metal Gear Rising, Bioshock Infinite and Dead Space 3 turn out.

If they didn't call it Devil May Cry, it would have been a quickly forgotten 3rd-tier brawler and they wouldn't have made as much money.

Fans are angry at this for the same reason Star Trek fans were angry at Star Trek 11. They're not going to make any more good games in the series now that it's been rebooted.

(Unless Capcom pulls a "Highlander 3" and releases a 6th game that pretends this one never happened)

I didn't want to like this game, but now I have to ask: is there at least one person who played and disliked it?
P.S. Oh, I see there is one.

Don't go giving Devil May Cry 2 (the other farmed-out title in the series) more credit than it deserves. I've heard some people say 5 is better than 2 and they're probably right.

One could think DMC2 and DmC are wars in some faraway land. Many people heard about many things. Is it true that True Last Boss™ in DmC is made of smegma?

Sorry to quote a picture, but it is more relevant than a thousand words. The problem with Capcom (and I'm not a hater like so many of you) is that they let their key developers go. Ultimately, I don't really know who Capcom are anymore other than a company which finances video games. If they had a greater loyalty to their developers, you wouldn't have such a crazy situation like the one depicted above.

If you owned a record label, you'd work your hardest to keep your best selling artists, but Capcom seems to follow no logic whatsoever--or if it is logic it is some brain-stem logic where a game does well enough to generate sequels but not well enough to continue to employ the developer...???

Game is fun.

Raise the difficulty if you want a challenge. Then you can have a 1 hit ko.

DLC for old dante look is rumored.

Too much mindless bandwagon hating for this game.

The only reason anyone is defending this game is because Bill O'reilly is one of the bosses

I wish I was joking.

Man don't boss battles where the boss hides and summons a bunch of regular enemies to fight just get you PUMPED???

wait a minute, that douchebag on the cover is actually dante, as in the same dante from the first game, talk about a makeunder

Watching videos on Youtube, I assume most are playing the normal difficulty. Even still, the fights look kind of easy in a boring sort of way; the bosses in particular seem to be slow and telegraph their attacks so it's painfully easy to see them coming. Probably the hardest difficulty isn't so lame, but it still doesn't look all that worthwhile gameplay-wise.

The game was originally going to use white-haired Dante and the same setting as its predecessors, but Keiji Inafune told Ninja Theory that if they were going to do the same kind of game the Japanese teams had, Capcom shouldn't have bothered outsourcing. Inafune wanted them to Western it up.

He said the same thing to the Maximo dudes when Final Fight was in their hands, causing them to change from a cell-shaded Akiman style to what we saw in Final Fight Streetwise. Reviews in the US then spent all their space blasting its aesthetics, but Streetwise actually had a really good fighting system.

It's probably not deliberate sabotage, but I think Inafune's growing disgust with Japanese-style games is skewing his perception of how other people will receive them. It's too bad these external studios are the ones that bear the backlash for taking his advice.

Regarding DmC, so far I can say it's a much better wreboot than Lords of Shadow.

Probably a whole topic unto itself, but I have no idea what a 'Japanese-style' game is. There are so many games coming out of Japan with vastly different visual and playstyles that it's unfair to blanket-label Japanese games in general as trash. I mean, look at how varied shmups alone are. It doesn't even refer to a specific genre or playstyle in the sense that at least 'euroshmup' does (which refers not so much to european developers in general but rather just a specific style of shmup that was popularized by them).

By the way, I wonder who really likes Bayonetta and Maximo character designs better than DmC's. (I dislike them all about equally.)
(Not) funnily enough, Maximo was by a Western dev, yet its character designs were Japanese. If you had any problem with Capcom's idea of Western art styles, you could have complained back in 2001.
