The Exorcist - 9/10

I can see why religious people were so very upset with it, it's pretty strong even now.

Several members of my extended (Catholic) family are still too horrified to watch this. They were brought up to believe that demonic possession is a real thing. I remember in grammar school, I expressed curiosity about ouija boards. Learned quickly not to do that ever again.

Man, still have never seen Cronenberg's Rabid. Shivers is one of my favorites of his. I was hoping that since I started collecting again it would have gotten a release while I was absent. I see that still is not the case...

The exorcist is a fucked up movie, there's no question. The lady that did the voice work nailed it... apparently it was the most stress inducing work she'd done. Don't have any intention of ever watching it again. I give them full credit: it's disturbing.

Better rush off to see The Exorcist II. It's apparently awesome!

Tobe Hooper was bummed that no one saw the original TCM for the black comedy satire it was, so he made extra sure that we'd get the point by the sequel.

If you mean specifically, Leatherface wiggles his fat body around like an idiot (ha, take a shot every time he does that in the flick) while trying to pelvic thrust [with his chainsaw] a girl who is clearly in to that type of stuff and an old man orgasms at the sight of Dennis Hopper dual-wielding chainsaws.

The movie then proceeds to have Dennis Hopper duel Leather Face with duel-wielding chainsaws.
Best fucking movie ever.

Ehhhh, I wouldn't say that Texas Chainsaw Massacre is explicitly a comedy. The dinner scene is certainly dark satire, but the film as a whole is in no way a comedy.

But yeah, TCM2 is a goldmine of hilarity. "Burned my beans bad on that one!"

true story about Exorcist - we had a really cool english teacher who was mad into sci-fi and stuff, anyway we watched The Exorcist in his class!
Seriously, im not sure what year it was but Id say we were about 14, he even, I kid you not, let me rewind some scenes, he probably got away with it by saying that it was to show us 'how bad evil was' etc. - stil hahah - I think he was part of the Irish Science Fiction Association or something, he was cool as fuck.

I'm looking for the titles of two movies.


The first is a USA roadtrip movie from the 90's where 2 women go to a class reunion which involves trekking across America. They try to convince their old colleagues they invented 3M's post it note and there is a mesmerizing dance scene at the end.

The 2nd is an old movie circa around 1980's, low budget movie about Russians (might be Japanese/Chinese) attacking the USA by way of tunnelling under the ocean and into the USA. The movie starts where an American man puts his ear to the ground complaining of rumbling but nobody will listen.

So, about Django Unchained. I'm really not sure how I feel about Tarantino anymore. I greatly enjoyed the film, which was a bit of a concern of mine as I hated Bastards, however I walked away with the feeling that Tarantino just isn't as tight a filmmaker as he used to be. Namely that the pacing of the film just feels really unbalanced and inconsistant for no good reason at all. This has been a problem with everything he's been doing lately and I real y would like to see it end. Maybe if he started making shorter films.

W/r/t Tarantino's direction, I think the only aspect one can find fault with is his pacing. It's certainly deliberate, so it comes down to whether you find it effective or not. After repeat viewings of his oeuvre, the only film I feel drags to a fault is Kill Bill vol 2. Everywhere else, I find the pacing to be effective, although I wouldn't necessarily fault someone for thinking otherwise.

He shoots from the hip: Scene composition/mise-en-scene looks to be all over the place, music overflows, dialogue overpowering the visual for the most part; what some refer to as "homage," I view as cut-and-paste. Then you see what it costs to make and it's either in overpaid actors or film processing or whatever. Death Poof costs tens of millions dollars more than what an able grindhouse movie director would've used. It's like using a state-of-the-art kitchen at the Hilton or Ritz Carlton to make a McDonald's cheeseburger - excessively stupid

I watched Running Man last night. Great old-fashioned dystopian sci-fi coupled with Arnold action-flick. I love how each of the Stalkers were distinct, zany, and oozing with fun. The ending is stupid, and it was a total cop-out not to see Jesse Ventura and Arnold slug it out, but it was a whole lot of fun.

My dad hated it though. Imagine that!

My sister and her boyfriend were later extolling to me the virtues of the recent action flick, Colombiana. I'll admit, it's one that I wanted to see and got good reviews when it came out. Anyone able to vouch for it?

Brave. It's funny at times and has some cool action scenes, but it felt too Disney-fied for my tastes. The subtlety of the best Pixar isn't there, it just vomits all of its moral message on you. Awful songs didn't help, and the slapstick gets old pretty fast. One of their weakest movies, though still enjoyable.

that's a class haul right there - Assault On Precinct 13 is amazing - also the wonderful OST was influence for Bomb The Bass - Megablast (Hip On Precinct 13), and therefore Xenon 2, therefore brilliant .

I don't know if I like it quite as much as They Live, but I like it a lot.

Beverly Hills Cop - 10/10

Just doesn't get better than this in the comedy action cop buddy genre, picked up the Blu-Ray and the quality is pretty good.


10 to Midnight - 8/10

A gritty crime drama starring Charles Bronson, but his performance is equalled by the relative unknown playing the murderer. Every scene with him in is akward.

Went to see The Hobbit in theatres recently. Instead of plot, most of the time is spent with midgets running from things or falling off cliffs. Then doing some more running from orcs, or wargs, a bit more falling, then Gandalf gets to do a bit of falling. Then there's more running and falling off cliffs, then a bit where they fall out of a tree after doing some more running.

Gandalf also steals all of Bilbo's good bits, like rescuing the dwarves. Instead of saving the dwarves early on and proving himself, Gandalf does the rescuing with a lot of slashing and running, and some falling for good measure. Then the dwarves make it a point to complain about how much of a useless pussy Bilbo is before Bilbo gets his lame 'heyguiseimcoolsrsly' moment and they love him and stuff.

Tolkien isn't really my fave fantasy writer by any means, but jesus it's so much worse than the book. Bilbo barely gets to do anything and they split it up into a trilogy by padding the thing with long sequences of running and falling with the occasional fighting.

Gandalf fights some orcs at one point by throwing flaming pinecones. I know Tolkien did a poor job of writing action sequences by fantasy novel standards, but come on.

Another morbid movie where the sci fi element is used to mask the fact its to hook you into believing something sci fi related will happen, when in fact, nothing does.

Brave is a great example of a movie whose first trailer created an insane amount of hype (in me at least!), and with each succeeding trailer dulling more and more that excitement. By the end, I was convinced it was a Dreamworks movie in disguise.

Yeah I'm excited to watch Precinct 13 - I'm a big Carpenter fan and it's one of his movies I've never seen.
What I loved about Running Man was its sense of style, and its memorable, lunatic badguys - each one had his gimmick, looked distinctive, and were hella cool (and funny!). You don't get goons like that in movies anymore.

Looper sucked. There were so many plot holes, the whole movie tried to present itself as something more than it really is. And Joseph Gordon-Levitt's makeup was ridiculous.

The Hobbit was bombastic crap, yeah. I went expecting it to be LOTR-level mediocrity and was still surprised. Its too bad that all the visual/prop/costume artists' collective talent is wasted by a script totally insensitive to Tolkein's writing, Jackson's stark ineptitude, and the demands of an expensive hollywood blockbuster generally.

I remember being somewhat interested in the turn toward realism in sci-fi/fantasy that started in earnest around 2000. Much like with TV, it seemed film artists were awakening from a slumber of cheese and sitcom-irreality... but its pretty obvious that grit/edge/realism are now just excuses to indulge in crass violence and crude sentiment. Its very sad to me (and very apparent when I talk with strangers in any depth about movies) that an uncritical conflation between realism and "darkness" is seeping into the public mind--to say nothing of the next generation of artists.

I really liked it, myself. Feels like one of those movies that, while not being the highest efforts in the craft, are eminently rewatchable. Eg Office Space, Jaws, Jurassic Park, The Other Guys... that sort of thing.
