I walked into the arcade yesterday and found myself laughing like a school kid. Slap in the middle of the floor they had set up a raised platform with two of the most enormous (and I mean enormous) vert cabs - so big the control panels and seating are about three feet away - running Ikaruga and Raiden IV. 2013 ftw.

I could only hazard a guess as to the screen size, safe to say it's cinematic.

EDIT: Found the cab: It's a 42" Sky King from Tong Li.

Being the only whitey in the place, I draw crowds on this thing. I turned around after playing RIV and there were about 15 people standing behind me.

Anyway, for great justice I smuggled some video footage on my phone - not easy, it's strictly forbidden to photograph/film, and there are tons of staff around. Unfortunately I didn't manage to get the full raised platform in, so I'm not sure if the scale is conveyed properly, but whatever, here it is:

I think the size is deceiving. A 32" in a setting like that would look tiny.

It's surprising how big something can be in a commercial setting and yet it isn't really apparent because it gets dwarfed by the scale of the surroundings.

Skykid, go back there and ask them how many inches their penises.... er.... I mean, monitors are.

It's way bigger than 32", although 60 may be pushing it. Somewhere in the middle.

The aspect ratio really isn't stretched much that I can tell firsthand (how can you even tell from the quality of the video lol?), but it's seriously difficult to play Raiden IV with so much screen to look at, since that game is all about getting sniped. Third stage boss is an asshole too.

I played Ikaruga a few times, and conversely having more screen helps, rather than the other way around - but a few credits is all I needed to remind me why that game is so silly.

Yeah, even when playing vert on a widescreen monitor, I wasn't liking how icky DFK looked when stretched, preferred it in 4:3 with black borders top and bottom. It actually looks like when you're sitting there you'd have to look rather far down to see the bottom of the screen.

I'm still jealous of those arcades and would totally want to pop in some credits anyways.

Ha ha, I thought a similar thing first time they told me no photography. Seriously though, what is it with arcades being so anti- recording, it's the same everywhere I've been. I assume it's because you're taking pictures of their customers, who may not consent to being photographed - but that's just a stab in the dark.

Ah, it's not that bad when the games aren't lo-res. It's getting tougher to find crt cabs about anyway, although this arcade has a bunch of blasts and naomi's - but Vewlix's tend to dominate. No escaping the lcd panel, but any place that wants to kick off 2013 with two 42" dedicated shmup cabs is fine by me.

Went back for more credits today. Cools the writing at the bottom says 'raiden' with what looks like the original font from the first game.

The image really doesn't appear that stretched to me at all, making me wonder if it's actually 16:9. I can't find the screen dimensions, but the resolution is (EDIT, FIXED) 1920 x 1080. Can anyone decipher that? Is that a standard 16:9 resolution?

Sorry! Dunno why I put that, blinking phone typing. It's 1920 x 1080, so it is 16:9. Really comes off okay though, perhaps because it's so large.

Maybe the monitors themselves have some kind of high-quality smoothing option in them that's been setup or something. Usually stretched graphics look icky to me because I can tell the game, particularly the fonts used for lettering/score look kind of... I dunno, 'off'.

That's the main thing I was observing, fonts, and at best I can only identify a very slight squeeze. Picture is super crisp too. Such a shame my footage failed to get the shmupping grandeur across, I guess it's one of those have to see it in the flesh things.

The stretching may not be as apparent in Raiden IV, but its blatenly obvious in your video with Ikaruga. The absorption field around your ship is supposed to circular, not an oval. What's sad is the the operator could easily remedy this and put the screen in 4:3 mode, but I'm sure all the casual gamers (including the operators themselves) would scoff at the black bars at the top/bottom.

That said, I'd still rather play on these huge cabs, than not at all. You are very lucky to have such a sweet arcade near by.

I can play Robocop arcade with a square pixel aspect ratio and it doesn't look (badly) squashed, either...it's just what you're able to tolerate before it becomes noticeable I suppose. I can't comment since I haven't seen it in person, but I would bet I'd be able to tell the difference. Edit: Dave K. can spot it!
