This is cool and all, but holy god are these guys geeks. And I mean, I've seen some dorky shit and I know I'm not one to talk, but this is like gazing into the abyss of Nerd. It's almost too overwhelming.

I'll try to stick around for the SotN run, though.

Whatever you mean with "geek", it can only be another argument to watch this marathon. These guys know their games very well and I like professionalism.

I really wouldn't have expected a geek-comment in this forum.

yeah some of the guys there can be a little awkward. if anyone's interested in watching any of this: i highly recommend watching miles run the metroid prime games, paraxade playing sonic generations and siglemic playing super mario 64. they're all incredibly awesome at what they do.

Yeah. I like SDA and what they do, but I find the marathons pretty offputting for this very reason. It reminds me of when I watched King of Kong and felt genuine embarrassment at being into the same hobby as those guys (except Steve Wiebe, who was normal).

"A Donkey Kong killscreen's coming up...!" :D

I thought it was awesome. More people should take their hobbies to extremes. It's fun.

He is a brony though. We've seen how those guys roll.

I like geeks, for the reasons Plasmo noted: taking a hobby to the extreme can be kind of endearing. I'd rather geeks than uneducated vandals/yobs/violent people any day of the week. I don't want to spend much time in direct conversation with guys who are fanatical about subject matter I generally find uninteresting, or have traded off personal hygiene skills in favour of WoW strategy or Final Fantasy dialogue recollection, but from a distance it's all kind of amusing.

Apart from weeaboos. Shoot those idiots.

Stayed up way too late watching this last night. Unfortunately, most of the runs I'm interested in seem to be happening while I'm at work, but I'll probably keep watching anyway.

What, Ecco only checks pad input every 8 frames?!

Edit after watching the entire Ecco run: That is one buggy and badly designed game.

Sonic 3 & Knuckles 2-player run with really consistent glitch abuse and the blindfolded punch-out attempt have been my favorites so far. Going to have to watch some of the runs I've missed as recordings afterwards. Looking forward to kennyman's BC:R run btw, game doesn't get enough attention

I think Ecco controls okay, given he's underwater, but that frame tidbit may explain why Kolibri controls like he's dying of a morphine overdose.

Now this is one thing that bugs me about Nerd culture: even fellow nerds can't laugh about being nerdy. I thought the event was fun to watch and I was especially impressed by how many players were able to play live at this one location. Plus they raised a lot of money (much more than expected).

But as an adult functioning in society (to some degree), I also like to take a step back from all of it and look at how funny it is to someone on the outside (shmups included). There were some awkward, awkward dudes at this thing. I found it endearing and relatable. My wife thought they were creepy and I understand that.

I wish they had one shmup where someone did a live 1cc. dex, Zerst, and KennyMan666 do you guys have any pull with AGDQ that they would highlight a shmup next year? usually they're only a half hour and maybe could be done during the off hours/bonus stream? would do a lot to publicize shmups to all those thousands who watch the stream.

I'd be willing to fly out and do a live demo on the shmups that I've 1cc'd.

Bonus stream is going on. I've got a casual neo contra run with uyama at some point. I will try to get a shmup in but it will likely be during offhours if it happens.

Skykid: No. Just no. Don't ever call me that.

So, anyway, yeah! AGDQ2013 was amazing. Call us massive nerds or geeks or dorks or whatever as much as you want, we gathered over $420k for cancer prevention! I'm proud of having been part of it.

Unless you find a legitimately speedrunnable shmup, there is no chance it'll ever be on the main AGDQ schedule. Bonus stream could very well happen, though.

That's an admirable use of gaming skill, doesn't matter who did it. Geeks ftw.

Damn, well done! :o I'd wondered how far you guys would go having hit the already impressive 100k goal so early in the week.

Regrettably I had to suspend funtimes due to university deadlines but I did enjoy Caleb Hart's Rockman X run. Guy's a damn surgeon. Got Boomer Kuwanger's heart tank on the first try. Squeee!

Skykid: Let's leave it at that I'm a fan of the show but fucking hate the fandom. And that word.

Rewatching some of the Awful Games Done Quick block in Twitch archives. Timecop is still a thing.

Had to miss the Awful Games Done Quick block since I was at work, but spent plenty of time watching last week, as well as some of the bonus stream last night. Donated too. And yes, even though it would be nice to see some Shmup action here, there's really no good way to speedrun most games in the genre.
