GCW:Zero is now kickstarted

Post by opt2not »

I've been really excited about this little piece of hardware. It's an upgrade, well, more of a leap from the dingoo portable. Open-source, Linux-base, hdmi-out, wifi...all good sounding stuff!

For the last little while I've been using my DS as my portable emu device and haven't jumped on some of the others 'cause I never thought they were worth it. I also never kickstarted a plege before: Both, till now. The Zero is boasting emulation capabilities all the way to PSX. A lot of the prototype play-testing videos shows off some really good benchmarking.

Why do these products always stick to such a boring and more importantly a hand cramp, uncomfortable design. When will there be a portable device that has hand grips, like a slightly wider Xbox 360 pad shape with a screen in the middle, would make long gameplay sessions bearable...or at least make a grip adapter like the ones you can get for the 3DS.

^ This.

Plus, not all of us have big white-man hands (among other things...) ;)

*edit: Also, running dodonpachi on this thing looks pretty good:

This looks very interesting. I think I'll pledge for one, but I have to think about something because I'll have to get this through "wife-funds-control"... It looks like there could be a slight monetary shortage ahead in my near future, with the little girl and all, so spending money on tech is definetely an issue... :(

I remember making a big fuss when the gp32x community was in the middle of discussing designs for the Pandora. Many of us were gp2x users and just wanted something with more power, better controls, and a few simple features like wifi etc. Adding keyboards, high resolution 16:9 screen, dual analog nubs and all that jazz made the thing seem more like someone's shitty mame cab. How about something that would enhance the experience of playing 80s and 90s games on a handheld?

This is pretty close to what I've always imagined the ideal handheld to be. Real dpad (I think), 320x240 screen, non-clamshell design, and not from GPH. However, there are some big question marks for me.

Will this just end up being another cheap feeling handheld to add to the pile?
Is the hardware capable to pull off all the important emulation?
Will we even see accurate emulation of anything significant?

I still feel burned from all the other handhelds from the gp32 to the caanoo, so I wont invest until I seem some results.

Check out some of qbertaddicts YouTube uploads. He's been working hard at testing and show results if the Zero. Lots of good videos.

Also, here's a good lengthy upload of lots of different emulators playing on this thing:

I don't know, it looks pretty damn good to me!

The ghosting is worse than I feared. Watching the famicom disk system emu video, I can see all sorts of awful ghosting.

In this video you can see a comparison of the pandora's lcd vs an OLED screen. The difference is night and day when it comes to simple 2d games.

Hmm, I'm usually one of the first to complain about the screens on these things but from every video I've seen (including the FDS one) this looks about on a par with a backlit GBA SP which is fine for me. Finding a source of low resolution OLED screens may be the reason for an LCD rather than a more modern technology? Then again a screen that could pixel double or triple with scanline simulation in that size might be nice.

Hard to tell from a Youtube video, but to me that looks better than a backlit GBA SP... Much better actually, but I haven't seen the FDS one, where is it?

Edit: I think this is a nice device but I would rather wait for the Vita to be hacked.

The gp2x wiz used a 320x240 AMOLED touch screen. And while the ghosting was hardly visible, the diagonal tearing certainly was.

I'm certainly not sold on the vita, but you can be sure to avoid any ghosting issues with its hardware.
