Cave are in the protracted process of suiciding, leave them be, I'm more interested in the sequel.[/quote]

There are sequels after death of a company? You mean a formation of a Treasure like co or something?

So Cave is having money problems, and their solution is to close their shops and stop selling items? Looks like they took notes from Irem.

I'm actually surprised that their shares haven't dropped to penny stock level yet; if I'm reading this right Cave Co Ltd still has a market cap (=combined value of all shares) of 1.5 billion JPY ($17.9 million USD).
I wonder when the shareholders are going to start bailing out.

How sure are we that Saidaioujou is going to be released for Xbox 360? All signs are pointing to Cave closing shop rather sooner than later.

Lol, more like the formation of Cave (risen from the ashes of Toaplan.)

But yes, you got the gist. ;) Their output is starting to get a little stale, so death and rebirth is probably the best way to freshen up.

CAVE was formed from the ashes of Toaplan.

.. and yeah - Friendly and I are on the same wavelength. How many companies do you know of that can completely sell out of product (every matsuri sale they had, at least twice a year) and still be in the red.

I bet a large percentage of their income goes into the wages of those 100 or so people they have employed which AREN'T making us new shmups...

Not only are most of Cave's employees not making shmups (which would be understandable); apparently they aren't doing anything that generates income. Sounds like a solid business model.

I think I understand the reasoning behind closing the online stores (which probably took about 5-10 people to run). I assume they didn't have enough employees in the non revenue-generating part of the company, which obviously needed to be remedied.

Death and rebirth, the circle of Shmup companies.
This company went downhill when Yagawa stopped doing games. Just let him do Pinksweets2/Ibara3 and you will see.

Seriously, their record label was incredibly popular (they even reprinted some CDs).
Pretty sure I'm not the only one who think that closing the shop was the most retarded idea they've ever had.

Considering they somehow allowed him to make 3 games in a row that afaik bombed hard. That is definitely what they should not do.

The horrors of Yagawa's Corporate Fist Fucks at Raizing are only whispered about.
It's the reason why Ikeda and Inoue just let Yagawa make his games no matter how hard they bomb. They're too afraid to say no.

This is fantastic, thanks. I've been looking for more of this kind of material lately, and this guy has done a great job of exposing how most of the corporations in Japan actually operate and what kind of state their economy is really in. I'm going to read his book.

Thinking of doing it myself. Hopefully it's not too one-sided. I'm sure he's a jaded mother fucker at this point though.

Here's another good reason Cave doesn't make money like they could be....

http://slist.amiami.com/top/search/list ... agemax=100

When was the last time you saw a Cave character figurine? We had all of one really crappy Reiko figure and a set of nearly impossible to buy Ibara mini-figures. When was the last time a Cave ship was a part of the Shooting Game Historica releases? Oh yeah, I forgot...they let RC Berg make a few beautiful model kits that all of 12 units of each were sold at Japanese Comiket events...Meanwhile an indie dev has turned his product into a huge merchandise line while Cave is left wonder why they can't pay the bills....

It says there is one in stock buy when I tried to add it it wouldn't let me so I guess the description is outdated.

I've seen one or two of the character kits on Tokyo Hunter...and usually about twice what they originally sold for. But their stuff shouldn't be so obscure that I can't find anything of theirs except on re-seller sites while I can order any of a half dozen or more in stock touhou figurines from amiami, hlj, hobby search or any other major Japanese export company. It's stunning that the currently most active shmup dev around doesn't even try to sell goods while Touhou has become a very large merchandise line. By no means am I trying to be down on Touhou here...good for him; it is just bizarre that Cave can't pull of the same thing with a staff of a hundred that a single developer can do with his series...

Casper retailed for Y14,750 I think but can be found cheaper on YHJ , I bought a kit for a lot less some time ago .
Solaris has a new, full 6 figure Ibara set for Y 20.000 which is cheap and it is unsold on their site for about a year .
