The Nintendo Gamecube thread!

Post by trap15 »

Ok, I feel bad for starting another one of these threads (too many already), but I think this console doesn't nearly get enough credit. I think it's one of my all time favorite consoles (maybe not as high up as SNES, but I'd probably rank it right below it), with some of my favorite games.

Particular games worth checking out (in order of how much I'd recommend them):
  • Gotcha Force [Capcom]
  • F-Zero GX [Sega/Nintendo]
  • Super Mario Sunshine [Nintendo]
  • Kirby's Air Ride [Nintendo]
  • Resident Evil 4 [Capcom] (The original, bitches!)
  • Metroid Prime [Nintendo]
  • SSX Tricky [EA]
  • Super Smash Bros. Melee [Nintendo/HAL]
  • Sonic Adventure 2 Battle [Sega] (lol, I know I'm going to get shit for this one)

I'd add (in no particular order):

REmake
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
Eternal Darkness
Zelda: The Wind Waker
Luigi's Mansion
Metroid Prime 2
Pikmin 1 & 2
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
Viewtiful Joe
Super Monkey Ball
Mario Kart: Double Dash
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes
Soul Calibur II
WarioWare (great in 4p)

Resident Evil (2002) is great - those CG backdrops will never age and the character models still look fantastic. Palpably musty oldschool survival horror.

AFAIK the Wii re-release is identical and a lot cheaper + easier to find, if anyone's looking for a copy.

Killer 7 is possibly the most perfect game ever made. Resident Evil 4 is a close runner up.

I've found Wind Waker to be a breath of fresh air in the Zelda franchise. TP was good but felt very standard.

I enjoyed Resident Evil 0 quite a bit as well. REmake is fantastic of course, but I'm eternally grateful that we got a new game in the GC style. I also remember it being fairly tough as well, which is nice since the series had been a little easy since RE2.

This is a good list. Even SA2B.
I like that game to death, but it is almost as glitchy as Sonic 06 at times.

I'd probably rearrange the top 4 entries, but that's just me [I don't like Sunshine, but it wasn't until Galaxy 2 that I liked a 3D Mario].
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Path of Radiance is probably the best Fire Emblem game.

It's great to be able to hook up a Gamecube to an Ultracade UVc via a modded JPN region D-Terminal to VGA output cable interface and play F-Zero GX at 60fps framerate on a low-res 15kHz traditional 4:3 arcade monitor setup in 240p. This is one possible solution to hook up such a GCN to an arcade monitor though. You'll have to select the 4:3 screen option from within the F-Zero GX menu screen prompts & you're good to go with that particular setup.

Custom Robo. I've only played the game a few times but I loved it to death. Heard the DS game's pretty awesome too.

007 Agent Under Fire is pretty good on Gamecube as well. It's one of the best Bond games in terms of singleplayer, and the Bond Moves bonuses are great.

Skies of Arcadia Legends is supposedly great, and I can't say SA2B was bad because it had some nifty bonuses.

To modify, Fire Emblem 7 and Fire Emblem 9 are the only good US-released Fire Emblems.

Skies of Arcadia Legends is indeed a great port, and while people bring up the lessened music quality (never really noticed it), the extra bosses and exploration markers more than make up for it. Probably one of my favorite JRPGs.

The GameCube is an interesting console - I felt rather let down during my earlier ownership of it (starting whenever the GameBoy Player deal was announced, which later became a permanent GC price drop) but it kept on delivering. Having pretty much every Resident Evil game released for it was a nice bonus to ownership (although I only have the main three - Zero, REmake, and 4). The system has been incredibly lovely to own too - my only real quibble is the controller but what it has isn't really that bad. I've never had any issue with it either.

Since release I've come to realize that most everything I got for it was a AAA-title; I've played a little bit of Wave Race and it made me realize that I could've had it much worse. Still need to check out a boatload of titles for it.

Killer7...played that one too many times to be really fond of it

Path following...argh. Some good missions but some really crap ones - and I don't care for some of the obsession with room revisits, especially the Coliseum (and that %$&@ annoying brat). Rave Corridor is pretty useless but cool. Good game overall, but Resi 4 and REmake are better to play. That said, I've spent far more time with K7 than REmake and probably started to approach Resi 4 playtime on it. Can't be bothered to play through Hopper mode but a good time was had. Very cool storyline though, but draining to go through (especially the first time).

Still need to get off my ass and hook the system up for this one.

Really good to know there's still a bunch of A-list titles waiting for me on it - including the last Zelda game, for instance.

Mr. Driller: Drill Land

Word of warning: game saves on this game only work on Japanese consoles. The game will boot just fine on a US/PAL modded Wii, or Freeloader equipped Gamecube, however game saves won't work. I region changed my Wii to NTSC-J to play it.

I think overall I was disappointed that the GC didn't get a lot of good 3rd party support, but I played the hell out of Super Monkey Ball, Metroid Prime, TimeSplitters 2 and 3, and more recently Burnout 2 on it. I played a fair amount of DK:Jungle Beat on it too, which was very good.

I tried to like P.N.03, I swear. That game would've been much better with full-time rapid fire and more variety in the levels. I do like the combo-based gameplay, and the stiff controls worked for the most part in the context of the game design. But the sheer amount of repetition turned me off.

It's too bad Drill Land didn't come out here.

I played the shit out of this game. chao garden is easily the dumbest idea ever conceived, and I probably logged 1000+ hours in there.

another great jap exclusive was kururin squash.
to be honest i've always used the gc mainly as a party console:
mario kart, mario football, mario party, minigames in supermonkeyball, warioware, kirby airride, minigames of kururin squash... a lot of great stuff to play together.

It took me like 6 different attempt at the game before it finally clicked with me. That said, I agree that not giving every suit an auto-fire option was just stupid (they could have easily done loads of variable auto-fire rates). The environments, while repetitious, were no doubt done that way on purpose to bring home the sense of isolation and sterility of the machine-overrun world.

I did put a lot of time into it. I think I made the mistake of doing the between-mission stages, which made the game wear out its welcome faster than it would have otherwise. AFAIK the reason the environments repeat so much was probably a development time thing more than mood. It's definitely a game I could pick back up; there's plenty to like about it, and it's too bad there couldn't have been a sequel that refined it even more.

People who couldn't get into F-Zero GX should play through the Story mode first. Story does what tutorials should - explains what the game truly is about. If you care to know, don't spend any points for other unlockables before.

That out of the way, I think in terms of hours I put in my 'Cube games, the order would be: 1) Burnout (the single player's main course is Survival, the party game where it's at - split screen), 2) Super Monkey Ball, 3) F-Zero GX, 4) Wind Waker, 5) Rogue Squadron II, 6) SoulCalibur II.
The backlog's about as big, but my Wii/GameCube gaming really started in the autumn 2011, so there are still things I look forward to.

The thread actually made me want Gotcha Force more than I want P.N.03. With Capcom games, following my hunches usually pays off.

Bringing up an 4 year old thread, anyway.
I always hear about The Wind Waker being a game that still holds up graphically because of its art style but I recently popped it in (after several years) and was kinda let down by it. The objects in the distance are looking really blurry, it doesn't has that popping cel shading look I remembered.
My setup changed over the years, so maybe this is a reason but gameplay videos on YouTube are looking pretty much the same, anyone else realising this or are my memories playing tricks on me?

Maybe those videos are using Dolphin or the HD release for Wii U?

I discovered the Fire Emblem game WAY after it came out. It started my interest in the series, and my tiny collection of RPGs on the GC.

Still my favorite, after the *amazing* Genealogy of the Holy War for Super Famicom.

Everyone should play F-Zero GX. What a hoot.

When I lived in the USA I sent about 50 Animal Crossings to the UK. I've never played it, but I suspect it must have had something about it that the demand was so high in the UK. Without looking I will assume a UK release never came.

Either that, or possibly something to do with it coming with a memory card? *shrug*

OP, your list is missing Ikaruga
