Just saw Django Unchained. Freaking loved it. God Bless You, Mr. Tarantino.

The movie gets really strange structurally at the end, but I have to agree. Still no evidence that Tarantino can do wrong.

Been watching the first two discs of Vermilion Pleasure Night and it is a kind of bizarre, midnight sketch comedy that borders on modern art. I remember seeing bits of it on video store screens and being curious about it. I ended up buying the 3-disc set last year, but never got around to watching it until now. It oozes Japanese weirdness, but that's what I enjoy seeing. If I was to compare it to anything it would be a live-action Liquid TV

Lion King 2.
Completely okay sequel. Not nearly as good, but it's quite serviceable. Probably one of the better Disney direct-to-video efforts.

Simba is a pretty crap king for the most part during the movie, which is completely reasonable considering his father died pretty early in his life, and he spent most of his life doing nothing with Timon and Pumba.

A bit bothered at a few of the budget-reducing animation cuts [especially the fire, it looked so awful here, compared to how brilliant it looked in the first film], but nothing too major.

Zira is a great villain though.

The origin story "Three Outlaw Samurai." A fair bit of deus ex machina but it never got really annoying. Interesting how the ending turned out - I didn't quite expect it, so the fight scenes were mainly tidy and on a smaller scale compared to what I'd expect from an out-and-out war movie - but it did those scenes very well. I also thought it had a very likable cast - most everybody was very charismatic. I can't remember having watched this type of movie before, but it felt very familiar (it made me think of Tenchu at a few points, heh). If only some episodes of the television series this was based off of could be found!

Didn't get to see this when it came out. Extremely good. 9/10.

Total Recall (2012) - 6/10

Well, it was made well enough, it's enjoyable as an action film. The character of his wife was pretty poor, if it was just a job why was she so hell bent on killing him *all the way through the film*? The visuals were good, the independance theme felt childish and forced, if they're going to call Australia "the colony" they should have called the chancellor "the bad guy" or "the evil English man". I liked the use of the gravity elevator concept.

For the people commenting on the new Total Recall, I'd love to know if you're watching the original cut or the extended director's. From what I've been reading there's quite a bit of difference in terms of plot quality.

Die Hard.

The perfect Christmas movie. 10/10.
Starts off slower than one would expect, but the intensity rises in a constant crescendo.

Poor, poor John though. Shouldn't have listened to that guy on the plane, eh?

Trying to remember what I've even watched lately.

Come Drink With Me - A seminal piece of martial arts cinema, but a pretty poor entry as a whole. Some neat effects here and there, but the story lacks cohesion and the fight scenes are poorly choreographed and very anti-climactic. Still, a worthwhile film, as well as an important one for later acts to come.

Gay Purr-ee - 60s animated cat film written by Chuck Jones and his wife, starring Judy Garland and a handful of others. Gorgeous backgrounds, good voice acting and decent animation are hampered by a pretty shallow story that never really goes anywhere. Some decent songs, but sadly not as memorable as I hoped it would be.

Barbarian Queen - First film of the series. Extremely low budget, poorly directed Corman fantasy production. Fairly entertaining with lots of boobies, sword fights and big 80s hair.

Curse of the Demon - Didn't realize, but I guess this was the inspiration for Drag Me To Hell. Pretty creepy Jacques Tourneur horror film that really shows his noir-like style. I was a fool and watched the Americanized, shorter version on my DVD instead of the original British cut, so that may have jaded my viewing experience a bit. Not my favorite film of his, but the finale is quite a treat. Shame you don't see the demon a bit more; he's one evil sumbitch.

Probably watched a bunch of more stuff that I forgot about. So it goes.

Live Free or Die Hard.

Pretty good. Not sure how possible the premise was, but it was well executed. Gabriel is not a particularly interesting villain though.
The car-into-helicopter scene is one of my favorite events in an action movie.

There were a few bits where I really saw an lot of CG [seriously, it really sticks out to me, eeyuch], but nothing too terrible.

7/10. Doesn't have nearly the same amazing flow the first Die Hard had, nor was the bad guy memorable [at all], but the action scenes were satisfying, and it was well executed enough. I'd give it a 6 if it didn't have that amazing car-into-helicopter thing, that is worth a whole point on its own.

It was just shy of 2 hours long, so judging from IMDB it was the theatrical release. I've read up on the changes and I don't think they'd improve my rating at all. Stick with the original, this didn't need to exist (like so many remakes or 'reboots').

Saw Dredd. Good craic. Quite surprised there's no videogame tie-in, actually - it's the most videogamey film I've seen. "Ascend enormous building to defeat crime boss" is the premise of literally every game ever.

I thought it was a movie about a maladjusted father with a rare technology retardation syndrome, simultaneously suffering from a nervous tick that makes him whoop like a cowboy when trying to express expletives, and aided by a sarcastic schoolboy in saving his daughter from a repressed homosexual who was so soft, he was almost a good guy.

Although I appreciated the blue rinse filter was there to make sure everything was soulless and dull, akin to a scriptless 70's arthouse experiment, I wasn't even aware it was meant to be a Die Hard film... or even a film at all.

Yeah, I've been mulling over this film a bit and come to the conclusion the last third is all wrong for an Italian western, and if it isn't meant to be doing that, why borrow the name?

Although going to rescue the girl felt out of place in a movie like this to begin with, her actually living into the final act turned it into another genre. Django himself never loses enough--and now I'm thinking of the original Django where not only does the girl die (not his wife), but he is physically crippled. Despite having a huge amount of blood, Unchained never goes for the jugular--all the good spaghetti westerns at some point (especially the Corbucci ones) rip everything out from under main character insuring that no happy ending will really be possible.

The horse dance thing at the end is just absurd. Also all the 'I'm one in a thousand' nonsense. I still think Django himself is a boring character in this film (part of the problem) and is upstaged by Jackson's antics in the final third. Just damn weird choices all around, and yet I still really enjoyed it.

Baaaah. I expected a far worse film than what I got, so I at least enjoyed it. The blue filter was painfully stupid, and awfully noticeable, but eh. I went in for mindless violence, and came out satisfied in that regard.

Just polished off the last two of the 52 movies I rented from netfix:

"Don't Touch The White Woman," directed by Marco Ferreri (same guy who did "Dillinger Is Dead"), and Boccaccio '70, directed by Fellini, Visconti, DeSica, and some dude named Monicelli (I don't think I've seen any of his films).

The Ferreri film is your standard free-form, political satire with a heavy leftist bent. It had its moments, with a few quips and dialogue bits that made me chuckle. I also liked the actor who played "Buffalo Bill." He really pinned the "boastful, braggart American" role to a T. Catherine Deneuve warn't bad either. Marcello did alright. Music was by Philippe Sarde, whose only other score I can recall is for Bertrand Blier's Beau-Pere. Pas mal, either. Overall, kinda boring and not something I'd watch more than once, but can appreciate the effort.

However, once I tuned in Boccaccio '70 all bets were off: THIS is one of the better films I have seen this year. Good God, it compiled everything that I like seeing and hearing into one neat, 4-hour package of vignettes. They don't make stuff like this anymore. I don't think there are four directors alive who could do this kind of collaboration anymore and then add a music score the likes of Nino Rota's. It's muthafuckin' cinematic perfection. Great looking girls, too; that never hurts

Harry Brown - stupid.

Evil Dead 2 - er... Not half as good as I remembered it.

Americana - brilliant. Low budget film self financed and directed by David Carradine. This film is the opposite of what is considered cinema me these days, and all the better for it.

Four Flies on Grey Velvet - finally got to see a good transfer of this. Pretty good.

The Girl Who Played With Fire - not so good.

Flash Gordon - nice optical effects but overall it seemed flat. Ornella Muti and Queen's soundtrack made it worth watching though.
