STG Weekly #3 Armed Police Batrider

Post by Aquas »

We're gonna go live in about 30 minutes from this posting, around 1:10 CST. This is the Raizing episode, I suppose.

The episode is up! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3FHhbANlm0M

I took some feedback and tried to make the intro less boring on the eyes. Specifically I use some zoomed in footage of the game which I'd like to use more of, but also include some more pictures / flyers and game art. This episode is like a primer to Raizing and I believe Frenetic did a wonderful job explaining the mechanics in a simple way. In the future we will do another Raizing video in which we have much more detailed commentary akin to the Mushihimesama Futari video. Expect the show to alternate between these styles of videos as we introduce new things etc.

From here on I'm going to try and plan out future episodes a little more cleanly, in order to have the best people available for commentary. However, I DO like these type of laid back episodes that highlight reasons why the genre is so great. Once again, I encourage people to volunteer their own replays and themselves (if you can manage to commentate your run with a certain flow.) Please PM me with questions or suggestions of what will work for yourself. I will also contact people on my own.

And still, a live playing is in the future as well. Perhaps even as special recordings aside from the weekly ones.

Thanks all and enjoy another episode. Feedback is welcome as usual.

Nice job, my favorite stg. Having cleared advanced, I feel slightly qualified in making this minor criticism, but I think it would be best to always have one commentator who has cleared the game or scored very high in it. I know these videos aren't primarily meant to be scoring strategy guides, but that depth of familiarity with the game would probably yield more interesting/meaty commentary all-around. I saw a few good raizing players in the sideboard chat making a lot of points that were missed, or correcting things. If you don't want to spoil the surprise of the upcoming episode with a running thread here, maybe you can just pm players from high score boards and petition their participation individually? I know it won't always be possible...

anyway, looking forward to the next one :D I liked the intro visuals too.

Not going to lie, there is a lot about Batrider that wasn't even touched upon in the commentary. Kinda a missed opportunity because of the popularity and depth the game has.

Drunkninja has had basically nothing to say for the last couple episodes. Frenetic and Aquas commentary is still of course pretty good, and I'm certain it will only get better.

Just finished watching this, and it was awesome! I just picked up a Batrider board, so it was good for me to see a few of the secrets without being overwhelmed - I did learn a lot. Also, if you need any videos to comment on let me know and I'll see what I can supply - I have a lot of doujin videos stacked up that I could provide. I'm not too keen on straight-up piracy, but as long as you guys are adding commentary and "remixing" whats already been created I can totally get behind it. Anyhow, keep up the good work!

Sorry I couldn't provide in-depth commentary, but hopefully I won't have anything getting in the way next time we do another Raizing game.
Fun to watch as usual though! :)

Haha, one of these days. I did try to get a few more questions in this time, though.

If demand is high enough and the circumstances are right, we can revisit Batrider for a more in-depth commentary guide. I know how you feel.

I would enjoy a second go at this one in the future. After the stellar job you guys did with episode 2, I was looking forward to a similar or greater level of coverage for Batrider. Blackoak has been chewing my ear off about it since I started shmupping and while this video gave me a greater appreciation for the game, it also made me feel like there was a lot more to cover, especially if this is going to be *the* Raizing episode.

Already PMed Aquas with a proposal for Garegga and i think showing Batrider in relation to Garegga would make the game much more interesting.
See what they changed, added to the system etc.

For me Garegga will always be the better game only because of how definitive it is in its presentation and challenge but Batrider is much improved in terms of system and gameplay.
Stuff like how they changed Black Heart 2 in Batrider enabling effective grenade milking even for the regular Garegga ships (since he has destructible wings that spew grenades and there is bomb invincibility in Batrider).

Yes! And if you do Garegga, I would really like to hear Eaglet as a commentator! He's pretty high up on the High Score lists here and I know that he has great insight into the game.

I hope that you guys keep doing this series as it's been great so far! Also, it was a nice touch to have the chat on the side while the superplay is running.

I enjoyed the replay, but like others I wish there was someone with more familiarity with the game commenting. People who were in the chat were making corrections but with a game that's stuffed to the gills like Batrider, it helps to highlight just what makes the game so deep, not just generalities about the system and rank.
Feedback will set you free.

Fantastic! I enjoyed watching the Replay and listening to your Commentary. I feel that Shmups take on an extra dimension when they are discussed strategically with Shmuppers. This reminds me of the Days of being in School when Legends would be spoken of as to how to complete a given Game - e.g. the Revenge of shinobi was hotly discussed as it was solid :)

I simply had to obtain Batrider'S ROM and play it on MAME - I had not really taken this Shmup seriously until my interest was revamped following your Programme - surely this is exactly what STG-Weekly is looking to foster :)

Many thanks and please keep up the community Spirit.
