That just doesn't look like Sherlyn Finn to me. Fuck if I can spell her name.
I just watched Fargo. Got a set of Cohen Brother's BR's for Xmas. They were dirt cheap, so my sis got me 3. I can't watch this over and over like I can Raisin Arizona, but it's probably their 2nd best movie, behind No Country For Old Men. Neck & Neck w/ Raizing Arizona (which I can probably still quote).

Batman: The Dark Knight Rises - 10/10
For all Heath Ledgers performance (which was entertaining) in the last one, the story and pacing of TDKR are so much better. Oh, and one other thing...
Anne Hathaway in the catsuit.

The Boy in the Stripped Pyjamas
Great film about the horrors of the holocaust, the naiveté of children and blindness of the german people to the true horrors of their government. Great film, strong ending, fantastic use of music and off screen violence.

Ooh, I watched that in one of my HS classes a few years ago. Great movie, definitely recommended.

Word. I can't say which I like better. I can pick out very little of what I don't like in either. The main thing is they're both very entertaining. Rises being the darker, I tend to prefer it. Anne Hathaway is definitely the best of all the hos in the entire Nolan trilogy.system11 wrote:Batman: The Dark Knight Rises - 10/10

I'm sure I'll watch through the BR again within a week. While nobody is particularly hard on Tom Hardy's Bane, I think it's vastly underrated.

I can say that I like TDK better as a movie, but for watching at home TDKR is a much better experience. The Dolby True HD mix in TDK is extremely hollow, lacks bass and fails to create a consistant sound scape.GaijinPunch wrote:Word. I can't say which I like better. INteresting. As I have lived in a city which boasts of people living on to of each other (quite literally) I've always had to "mind the volume". So, the best sound I get is w/ my headphones on. While I have great headphones by pretty much any standard, I think you'd have to nitpick to if it was mixed poorly. Mine actually have clearer mids rather than bass, as I use them for DJing, and most tunes jack the base up too high (often to make the track easier to mix).
While neither have a bad score, I like TDK's score a bit better. The one that stands out the most is the detuned strings sound when the Joker is telling Batman about the locations of Rachel & Dent in the interrogation room. Eerie.

Tom Hardy is always pretty good IMO - and shows real committment to any role he takes on in terms of physical preparation. Look at his build in Bronson and TDKR, and consider Inception was in the middle of those two. Hard to believe it's even the same actor.GaijinPunch wrote:system11 wrote:I'm sure I'll watch through the BR again within a week. TDK has one of my favourite scores. The sheer power of the horn section is overwhelming and gives a delightful little tingle. The problem I have with TDK's sound mix on a proper home theatre is that there's large spacial gaps between the channels. Something you can't really notice on a 2-channel down mix, especially one that levels volume. The problem with the lack of bass is that when something big happens, like flipping the truck, there's no sense of weight or impact to its landing.GaijinPunch wrote:INteresting. Bale's transition from The Machinist to Batman Begins will likely never "be beat". I would hope not, anyway. Cheers for the TDK sound tip. I hope to one day have a proper theater, but I doubt it'll be while I live in Tokyo. I've heard my neighbors phone on vibrate, which means I know they're heard me fucking. Loud movies? Forget it -- waking people across the street.

Re: Movies you've just watched
Damn I just watched "tdkr", what a turd. Nothing in this film is believable, makes any sense nor even tries to avoid sempiternal clichés. Hi, dark vador bad guy who wants to destroy the world. Hi, femme fatale catwoman who puts herself in ridiculous situations then miraculously gets out of it with usual one liners and dance-fighting. Hi, non sensical cops striving for justice and incapable of making political or tactical decisions. Oh, and there's the time bomb too !
Too bad catwoman doesn't get shot 100 times in all those situations like she should.. way to make believe in a "super hero". This goes for pretty much all characters in this movie though, including batman and his valet whose sentimental behavior serves as an excuse to try and emote us with the same corny melody as always. "You're like my kid, but I'll never say it!" "I don't want to be your kid but I need you to be my father!". Spectators, now is the time to shed some tears just because it reminds you of your own past affective troubles ! Oh, intense emotion !
Movies like these makes even the gaming industry look like it's having a healthy creative era.
It is difficult to believe that someone involved in making a master piece such as Memento evolved over the years to contribute in creating such a poor audience-targetting movie-length advertisement. Surely the director himself plays a very little role and most of the end result stems from money investment and profit maximization. Because as long as you put the right names on the poster and get your trailers to spam all media, you know you're gonna make big bucks regardless ! Why not take it further and comply with corporate interest by using the whole film to communicate the idea that rich guys who made it on their own from scratch will save us from evil revolution-seeking groups who really just want to destroy everything ? An upside down parody of the real world contributing to make people believe in and keep them working and paying. Marion Cotillard even appears again as the ambassador of the big French cosmetics corporation in the world, regardless of how uneasy she is with the English language and how corny all of her lines always sound and faces always look. Surely if you follow the interests of the wealthiest, you get more funding !
Crap gets well paid !

I am not completely sure what you mean, but I watched again Honneamise, as a homage to my father and Christmas time. To balance the sadness of Honneamise with something lighter, me and the wife also watched Porco Rosso and the older Lupin movies. I confess that she forced me to watch some ponies too, but at least the general colour palette of the show does have a good effect on my mood.GaijinPunch wrote:

We might go for Ghost in the Shell and Akira too, and the Creamy Mamy movies (!).

Re: Movies you've just watched
I just watched the first Lassie movie, Lassie Come Home, from the early-to-mid 1940s, and I'm really surprised to say I adored it! I'd only seen the TV series a couple of times, and always found it a bit wet. But this movie was a great piece of escapism into simpler times and idyllic rural Britain (I grew up in a tiny English village), and I loved it. And, sincerely, that dog (Pal) truly has a bit of charisma. If you're a bit stressed and overworked, and modern life is getting to you, Lassie's your woman. Along with The Raid, I think it was my favourite new (to me) movie of 2012!
Although it did make my wife cry when a little dog called toots got hit with a stick. Harrowing stuff!

agree anne hathaway is standing out but everything else feels clumsy.
I feel there is no natural flow in the movie and too many useless characters.
the joker is such an emblematic figure in batman pantheon that it automatically tops all others topics.
catwoman is sexy but honestly she doesn´t do much.
And what is this at the end,out of nowhere marion cotillard is the bad girl, her death is really bad too
completely disappointed but I feel the dark knight was kinda endgame for this trilogy, could have stayed on 2 episodes I guess.
really curious what´s coming next as I understand this is the last one with bale.

For me to watch a full length, animated film like any of the ones you mentioned, I need to be in the right mindset. It's not that hard to get into it usually, but I've had a bicycle wreck, and then been kind of ill after I finally got over that. And, as it's Xmas time, lots of end-of-year parties so I've been drinking quite a bit.I am not completely sure what you mean, but I watched again Honneamise, as a homage to my father and Christmas time. Burn After Reading: Has a mere 7.1/10 on IMDB, which I find horribly underrated. I've seen this one twice. Both by myself... the first time being on an airplane. Both times I laughed my balls off. Malkovich makes the movie, but nobody is bad in it, even though Brad Pitt does seem slightly out of place. JK Simmons very small but memorable role clenched it for me. This is the closest thing the Cohen brothers have done to Raising Arizona I'd say.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.
Damn, I love this movie. Easily one of my favorite movies ever, especially since it still captures the feel of Star Trek, even while still being set on Earth. I like it more than II, although that's because IV's a much lighter film.

I was totally unable to get into this movie. It seems that Malkovich/Cox is supposed to be the villain of the film, but he's the only one remotely relatable. JK Simmons was good as usual. Everyone else is more or less a moronic asshole. I guess I just don't get it?GaijinPunch wrote:Burn After Reading: Has a mere 7.1/10 on IMDB, which I find horribly underrated. Indeed... most characters are a bit too stupid for their own good. Again, a la Raisin Arizona, although most of those characters are definitely more likable. I see this one as the adult-themed RA. I would say this one is a bit more realistic. A small population of people that generally hate each other and are by and large, unhappy. For the most Cohen element was Clooney's character's OCD about floors and exercise.Moniker wrote:I guess I just don't get it?

I quite enjoyed Burn After Reading when I saw it in the theatre. Not the Coen's best, but considering the general state of cinema still an enjoyable (and original) caper flick. Clooney's character was great.

The Lion King.
Oh man. Watching this in HD is a treat. It looked gorgeous way back when on VHS, but this is something else. I fucking miss traditional animation in film.
Also, Scar is an excellent villain. Lots of little bits that bother me [like how everything seems magically alright at the end after everything was burnt and ruined thanks to Scar, even considering the bit of timeskip that must have happened], but they're excusable.

I just last night saw 80s movie Dreamscape, where scientists and telepaths enter other peoples nightmares as active participants. It wasn't a cinematic masterwork, but nicely done, distinct, and I really enjoyed it. And it was a lot less pretentious, self-satisfied and annoying than Inception, which I really didn't like.

I remember this... it was one of the first PG-13 rated movies! I'm pretty sure I wasn't allowed to see it.
PRE-EDIT: I was right. Wikipedia. It was released the same day as Lady in Red, which was 1 week after the first PG-13 rated movie: Red Dawn, which has recently been remade into what looks like a gigantic flying turd.
EDIT: Watched the trailer on Youtube.
