I don't see how you're getting the slightest Evangelion vibe from Pacific Rim. Evangelion: angsty teens piloting anorexic, virtually identical "robots" against often abstract-looking enemies (giant geometric shapes, giant beach balls, etc). Pacific Rim: gung-ho adults piloting a variety of chunky robots against traditional kaiju.

Guillermo del Toro is clearly channeling the super robot shows and kaiju movies of the 60s/70s, not Anno's depression fuelled 90s post-modernism. One of the robots even has a rocket punch, for fuck's sake. Personally, I can't wait for this movie.
couldnt have said it better. saw the previews today. along with "After Earth" it looks fucking incredible.

Yippie kay fucking A. I always try to get Die Hard in for the festive season.

This could very well be my favourite Schwarzenegger film, barring T2 of course. Great world, great characters, a simple story that does just what it needs to and some of the best "one-liners" of Arnie's career. Plus Richard Dawson playing Damon Killian is just perfection and the end credits music is really good.
Now read the book. It will blow your mind, guaranteed.

Sure, that would make a great movie to watch for Xmas. Nothing like a huge, oppressive, cynical film to help invoke the holiday spirit!

I watched my Dark Knight Rises BR. I never noticed the difference in volume of Bane's voice in the theater but did here. Not a deal breaker. Movie still rocked like a mofo, even if Anne Hathaway didn't show her tits... which I'm sure were smaller than Tom Hardy's.

Did that ages ago. Had the collected Bachman books since i was like 12. And while I do like the book, it proves yet again that sStephen King cannot write endings.

My favorite Arnie one liner is from Commando.

What happened to Sully?

Yeah, he's done a lot of work outside films but not as much as he should have in them, seems a shame as he's played some memorable roles - in The Warriors for example.

Holidays have been great for catching up on films. Watched the classic noir Double Indemnity from 1944. With Chandler co-writing, Billy Wilder directing and the always excellent Edward Robinson playing a sort of third man, this film has to be great from the very start, and it is. Not as genre bending as Sunset Boulevard (it's a straight murder caper), but done precisely the way this sort of film should be made. If you enjoyed The Maltese Falcon, this one is easy to recommend.

Just bought that Bachman anthology a few months back. Never did read those. The Long Walk sounds positively evil! As do most of them, really.

I watched "Twin Peaks Fire Walk With Me" again after not having seen it in a very long time. I forgot how intense it is. I've met people who loved the show but get completely bent out of shape about this movie. I know it really requires an understanding of the show's plots to follow, but on it's own, "Fire Walk With Me" is pretty impressive. I've internally reshuffled it to the top or near the top of my favorite Lynch films.

Also, this scene makes me LOLbro every time:

Joshua (2007)

Holy hell, I was not expecting this film to be nearly as good as it was. The plot is essentially about how a sociopathic 9 year old handles the arrival of a new sister, but it's much deeper and more sinister than that. Great acting all round, especially from Vera Farmiga. The characters are all very believable and have faults that are used to accent the plot, rather than as mere window dressing. One of the best thrillers I've seen in a long time.

Tai Chi Zero, 3/5.

After seeing the amazing trailer, my expectations were a bit too high. Mixing Kung-Fu with steam-punk in a Scott Pilgrim-type of cinematography plus good 'ol slapstick and heavy metal music seemed fresh. Lost interest after about 40 minutes. Will watch the two remaining parts of this trilogy though, as it had nice fight scenes and sweet, asian babes.

I was hoping to add this to my top 5 list of this year, but no. I'm gonna watch something else from Asia now, hopefully it'll be better.

Just got back from Django Unchained. As with all of Tarantino's films I'm a little dissatisfied, but overall it a very entertaining film. Like Inglourious Bastards, this is ultimately a racial revenge film, which is unfortunate because there's a lot more material to work with here. Django as a freed slave turns bounty hunter works incredibly well, and when the film is doing its Italian western thing it is at its best--this makes up roughly the first half of the film.

Ultimately it seems Tarantino has to make a choice as to whether he wants to do an Italian western or shoot a bunch of honkey slave owners, and he sides with the later. It is this decision which makes the second half feel contrived to me, and there are a couple choices made by characters that seem to jump the shark.

If that sounds like a terrible film, be relieved that you will be entertained--there is tons of horrific bloodshed, some great comedy, and some pretty damn good acting. My dissatisfaction comes from the missed opportunities here--many of which were invoked when Tarantino decided to revitalize the Django franchise.

It does have a different vibe than the series, although the series isn't exactly consistent. I think the biggest beef people had is that at least another hour of content was dropped from the film (maybe more) that featured many of the other twin peaks characters.

The Bullet Vanishes - 4/5

Really smart thriller set in 1930's China where a string of murders in a weapons factory is being investigated by two sharp detectives. Really great!

The Expendables 2 - 8/10

This is as good as the first one should have been (but wasn't IMO) - lots of action, wafer thin plot, bad guys getting killed, Willis and Arnie in a smart car skidding around shooting people. Lots of fun :) You have to hand it to Stallone too, he's kept himself in amazing shape and can still be convincing in the action hero role.

I've always liked this one. Wacky ass movie, that's for sure. Would love to see the "real" cut, but I'm sure we never will. I always thought Mädchen Amick was the hottest one on the show. She was in Californication briefly. MILFy as one would expect.

Yep, The Expendables 2 sequel has plently of hilarous one-liners including one attributed to Bruce Willis' portrayal of John McCain from the first Die Hard flick. It certainly made me crack up when viewing it for the first time.

Lynch knows how to pick the babes. Shelly definitely has it going on, but I've always been most fond of Audrey Horn. Sherilyn Fenn also starred (and looked fine as F) in my favorite shitty car movie, "The Wraith."

I read they made his voice much easier to understand. I saw DKR in an IMAX theater and Bane sounded excellent but was very difficult to understand.

I saw "Man With The Iron Fists" and was really disappointed. But fuck, RZA + Eli Roth, I wasn't expecting much. Roth is Tarantino's little croney.

saw this. 3/5 is what i give it as well. the stop and slow sequences were cool for the first 10 minutes than they just become a distraction. Check out the new S.Korean film "Thieves"

John McCain was a notorious prankster as a POW, but it's less well-known that he single-handedly cleared the Klaxon Oil building of terrorists back in 1972, and only using his trusty Air Force-issued sidearm...without any bullets.

I get the biggest grin thinking of him haltingly saying "Yippie-ay-kay-ayy...you gook mother fucker, oh that's right, you don't like that word? Well too bad, you gook" and also "I'm going to take this old Twinkie and shove it so far up your..."

These days, it's all "Now I have a seat on the Armed Services Committee, Ho Ho Ho."

Like a dumb ass, no. I should have.

Agreed on Tom Hardy was great. It's hard to top Heath Ledger, but I think the role of Bane brought quite a few challenges: all of which he rose up to.

Finished watching the supplemental material. Pretty interesting stuff. Looks like Nolan is one of these old school guys that only uses CGI as glue, and only when totally necessary.

Across 110th Street - Solid blaxploitation flick about a couple of small time criminals who rip off a mafia stash house. Good acting and all the requisite 70's New York City grime you can handle.

Double Indemnity is great, one of my favorites. The other noir adaptations of Cain are pretty good too. Mildred Pierce is excellent, as is the Postman Always Rings Twice. The Italian adaptation of Postman... titled Ossessione is pretty enjoyable too.
