Do I need a sync strike?

Post by scarmullet »

I live in NTSC land and so I do not have regular access (aside from teh interwebs) to RGB scart cables. So I have fashioned my own RGB cables from aftermarket game console accessories (for the SNES and such), and put them through a DB-15 giving me 15khz on the Horizontal pin with nothing on the vertical pin.

Now, I recently ordered the DIY scaler kit alone with no SLG3000 (coming soon). Do I need a sync strike to put my 15khz RGB signal from my SNES or Genesis though the DIY scaler? or will it take the resolution as is?

You'll need a composite sync signal for that scenario. A sync strike will meet that need, unless you "tap" into using composite sync directly from your consoles.

Well on my SNES to DB-15, I am using the composite sync on pin 13, which is the Horizontal Sync.

It just occurred to me that there are 5 pins I can use by the VGA port which apparently accept CGA (15khz RGB) sooo. all I have to do is hack up an adapter to work with that and I should be golden without the Syncstrike.

That's not the question. Of course you can connect 15khz RGBs any way you like to your converter board, but it will only work if the cables use the proper SYNC pins from the systems. Standard RGB cables alwayws use composite video for sync instead.

I got my CGA to VGA scaler, and when I try to run something though it, it looses picture and the red light blinks. Even my PS2 through component. And sometimes it just shuts off and restarts in a loop.
