Look harder. There's a carrier-like ship in Stage 1 with parts blown out of it on the ground, and a water-filled explosion hole in Raiden 2/DX.

I take your word for it, but sounds like an afterthought to make those who care feel less awkward. Kind of like the 2nd plane being blue after all.
Not that I would guess what beef Ikaruga folks have with all those machines, but Ikaruga officially has a story, so there's little left for me to guess.

So you're basically saying that you hate how the earth actually fought back the aliens more easily in Raiden?

The numbered games don't seem to have an arc, Cranassians just attack for time number x and the Raidens beat them back. Raiden Fighters has a few more plot points, but it wasn't until the second game that anyone even bothered saying what we were fighting for in the first.
In regards to there possibly being more to the story, I am going to assume that the hidden underground radar towers and gold pyramids in Raiden DX suggest that maybe the Cranassians were here on Earth way before humans were. Which reminds me of the storyline of Resistance: Fall of Man. Also, I am guessing that the Raiden Fighters series' story takes place before the original series, given the setting and enemies faced. However I cannot think of a possible explanation for the future fighters being in the game, storywise. In Raiden Fighters 2, judging from the markings on the MK-II and MK-II Beta, you are playing as a United Nations pilot.

Don't forget the desolate wasteland with burned out houses right before the stage 2 boss in DX and the ruins in stage 4.
Obiwanshinobi wrote:Played 1 and DX, but I don't recall anything of the sort. No ruins, no heavy industry pumping out all those machines (whereas Garegga gives me the impression of some war effort going down there).
I didn't see a country at real war, but I have some expectations that Raiden doesn't meet. I mean, the world of Gun Frontier looks troubled to me. The world of Raiden does not.
Look at the city of Raiden, then the city of Varth.
Ok, so the visuals don't evoke a feeling of being at war, but a good majority of the music tracks have a sad, melancholic feel to them that sets the mood.

DX's hidden Sol radars were almost certainly inspired by the Sol Citadels in Xevious, where the invaders turn out to be the original inhabitants of Earth. Whether Raiden's Sols have story significance or are just an homage is up to you, however.

That's a great idea! :P I loved the story in Resistance: Fall of Man, even though it left a lot to be desired and discovered, so I will have the Sols play a key role in the story.

Dunno, like which one? Subjective, to say the least. To me, Gun Frontier is about the only shmup where music evokes sadness (not really typical of the genre). Typical of Taito, though.

As you can see in one of the pics, there is a a guy who looks like he is a aircraft mechanic or flight controller, which means there might be more characters.

Seems like I have to mention Metal Black again.

It's called "project Gun Frontier 2" for a reason.

Metal Black is more typical Taito in my book. Most of the time I barely notice the music, but there are moments when it catches me off guard (whereas Gun Frontier OST sounds narrative all the time - I fall for it, but I'm not sure if that's the way music SHOULD work in games).

Raiden has some of the most memorable tunes around, but it's meant to get you pumped rather than make one shed a tear. Typical shmup fare in that respect.
What's unusual is that's there is no sign whatsoever that we are the good guys defending something. Or avengers for that matter. I remember the water-filled crater now, but it looked so much like a pit dug to build something upon or a water basin that I didn't think "war" when I saw it.

That's exactly what I have been wondering about for so long. Judging from that ending scene, I am guessing that the Fighting Thunder ME-02 was actually the spirit of the fairy, and when it is about to land, and it turns into the fairy, the crashed jet on the ground is the Raiden MK-II from the classic games. I am also willing to bet that this is the same location from Raiden 1; near the first stage boss, you can see a crashed Raiden jet in the dirt.

Possible reasoning you could write in to why the Raiden ship is red: the Raiden ships are supposed to be these badass state-of-the-art fighters right? Then it stands to reason that bright colours draws more attention, so why not have the badass fighters draw all the attention from enemy attackers while the rest of the military have more reprieve from the onslaught.

If you put together a short story, you will need to have a multitude of characters, not just the pilot of Raiden. Having some characters in the regular human forces would add more scenerio depth.

You could come up with an explanation to the Red and Blue ship differences that involve the bomb choices, or even the forward/back, lateral movement differences.

Just some ideas for you to think about.

If you have to make up so much additional shit, why even bother to tie it directly to Raiden? Just write a series of short stories, or a novel, or whatever, and then just drop in little callbacks to Raiden (name some huge "boss" enemies something similar to Raiden bosses maybe?).

Not for that sad bereavement feeling it can't :)
But it's a good trump card, the high point of the sequel.

There's a ton of melancholy tracks in the Psyvariar games in general, I imagine that decision came to the devs naturally since the game is a lot more non-hostile than most shmups.
