Hotel Transylvania. Your generic father/daughter kind of movie, where the father is overly protective of the kiddo, but in a monster's POV. Not so bad though.
This is my signature. It's so unique, nobody else has it.

Not a slam on anyone, but still weird I saw these movies back when I was 9 or 10. I can't imagine growing up without them, or Morricone I might add. At 40, they're one of the few things that has aged with grace from my childhood. Wear your MAN MOVIES with pride, coz that shit never goes away. If you live to be 100, For a Few Dollars More, Yojimbo or Road Warrior...those movies will still be among the best movies ever made.

Just watched Trailer Park Boys, what a weirdly entertaining movie. I wouldn't say I particularly liked it, but at least I now know where Emphatic's old avatar comes from. :P

I'm a bit younger, but I definitely feel the same way. I can't imagine my young life without The Thing, The Road Warrior, The Beastmaster, Conan the Barbarian, Predator, etc. Gets better with every viewing. I kinda wish I was okay with breeding so I could have a kid that didn't have shit taste growing up.

After you've finished the trilogy, consider "Once Upon A Time In The West" - more Leone/Morricone spaghetti masterclass, starring Charles Bronson with a mug like a slab of sweaty granite and Henry Fonda with a concrete-shattering deathstare. The opening sequence is a marvel of uncompromise. Soundtrack never fails to raise a few goosebumps.

Check out the series, it's the funniest shit you'll ever see. The first movie is a great starting point though, as it gives a great introduction to the characters. YOU KNOW WHAT I'M SAIN', SAIN'?

I concur. Easily my most adored Leone film, as well as one of my overall favorite films. Probably my favorite Morricone score. I used to blare this at work on Sundays while I stood standing in an empty warehouse, waiting to draw my imaginary gun on some unsuspecting customer that walked into my town.

if speaking of The Big Dirty it was by far inferior to anything else of TPB imo, even taking into account that it had to do a lot of 'explaining'. 'Countdown To Liquor Day' is much better than The Big Dirty IMO, as is Say Goodnight To The Bad Guys. God TPB is so brilliant - some of my favourite episodes: the Green Bastards from Parts Unkown one, The Rush Concert one with Bubbles playing Closer To The Heart at the end, the one where Bobandy goes back on the game selling his body for cheeseburgers :D.

Mr Lahey is IMO one of the best onscreen drunks ever. I just love this:

BOBANDY: 'Is that you talking Mr. Lahey, or the liquor?'

MR LAHEY: 'I am the liquor Randy.'

haha I love how freaked out Bubbles always gets by Lahey's ridiculous shit metaphors, as it's so out of character as in general Bubbles is actually behind his exterior one of the most clued in characters.

Two older movies I'd never seen

Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Pan's Labyrinth (2008)

I'll say I'm somewhere in the range of their IMDB ratings (as usual I guess?). Pan's Labyrinth was far more violent than I thought, but I was also unaware how much of a role the political conflict would play in it. Very enjoyable... watching the subtitles, reminds me I should study Spanish for a year and be fluent.

Dawn of the Dead seemed to be a not-shitty Zombie movie. Nothing that hadn't been done before (and not as good as 28 Days/Weeks Later) but still enjoyable. I found Ving Rhames to be rather flat... at least his character, not necessarily him. It was also weird to see Phil Dumphy be such a pimp. Glad I watched it.

Deserving it's own post:

Alien/Aliens/Alien 3/Alien Ressurection supplimental material.

Going off of content, it was great. I'm glad I watched it. I usually don't go through the bonuses of my purchases, but I figured why the fuck not for this set (having just bought the BR set for the low price of $29.99 off of Amazon). It seems that the first three were absolute shit storms in terms of production, while the 4th was just a big old love in. Not drawing any parallels... just saying....

Anywho, I found it a treat that the special effects for the first 2 in their seeming entirety, and the majority of the 3rd, were thought up on the spot at times, and achieved with more creativity than supplies. Imagine starting such a project like Aliens and not having all the shots figured out. Trial and error? WTF?! Sad to see those model designer guys gone, and a lot of them I'm sure out of work.

Just got the Blade Runner Anniversary Edition (I know, I'm a loser) so that'll likely be my next.

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance. I liked oldboy a lot, and even enough to check this out, but it was just too slow moving for me and felt like the violence was just tacked on. At least they went up from here with oldboy, but the story really didn't make much sense to me and jumped around a little too much. Is the 3rd in this trilogy worth watching? or did I see the only one worth seeing?

i like sympathy. the first part theme regarding capitalism and its corrupting influence on individuals and its repercussions is pretty much unparaleled in modern cinema in terms of a fictional narrative. the violence to me wasnt tacked on it was the culmination of the events of the story or problems inherent within the characters, and also base reactions to extreme emotions/situations. i enjoyed how this one is much more grounded in reality and more about destructive/physical revenge rather than psycological like oldboy. the violence in old boy isn't about revenge its about neccesity and indugence typified by the squid scene. The sytization of both films further accentuates the theme of revenge, the achilles tendon scene in sympathy is probably one of the most visceral scenes in cinema, and the way its so grounded in reality gives you a real sense of the repercussions of violent revenge, whereas the more etheral and disjointed world of oldboy further highlights the psycological elements within.

they both leave you with a sense of continuation, with sympathy the revenge cycle is un-ending although all the main protagonists are dead the world directly outwith them will still feel the ripple effects. oldboy - the physcological revenge has been meted out and dae-su will continue to live with a parallel of the guilt/shame that the agressor and his sister was made to feel.

ive seen lady a couple of times but can remember the plot well enough to give a decent insight into it as i was always just watching it over my shoulder doing something else.

^very much agree

Anyway, Machotaildrop.

Introduced to me as if Wes Anderson made a skate movie, which is not really too far off. It's a lot better than I expected it to be, probably pretty entertaining even if you have no interest in skating. And either way I'd always have time for a movie where pro skaters live in a stately mansion and have "duels" on a half-pipe floating on a lake, and start a beef with a gang of nomadic skaters who hang out in an abandoned theme park.

Any recommendation from his filmography?

Waterland - Jeremy Irons and Ethan Hawk (early 90's)

Barton Fink has me rewatching older Coen brothers: Millers Crossing, O' Brother and Crimewave. seen Blood Simple

Candy - heath ledger, heroin addict in love. good but falls short Permanent Midnight, Drugstore Cowboy, Requiem, Trainspotting and a personal fav Half Nelson

I enjoyed that, it's in the same bleakness league as 24 Weeks Later (a lot of it from the soundtrack in that one).
Please, read the book of this one. I enjoyed the movie of 'The Road', but at first I was insulted they were even trying to make it as a movie. The movie is good, but not at all to the level of the novel.
I love the book as well but we gotta be realistic, they're not going to film infants being roasted over a fire. On another note, Franco plans to direct and star in a film adaptation of "Child of God." How are you suppose to film something like this with an R rating....

I watched E.T. For the first time today. I remember when it came out, but for some reason I didn't get to see it.

Anyhow, it was way better than I thought it was going to be - which is always nice. Amazing performances from the kids, brilliantly lit and a great ending. Spielberg's last really good film (?)

He's done a few good ones since then, but generally his family-oriented ones suck. When he does a historical piece, it has the potential to be amazing. Schindler's List, etc. Not seen Lincoln yet, but with Daniel Day Lewis in it I doubt it's bad.

Savages: Usual violence you'd expect from Oliver Stone. Obviously influenced by the cartel violence in the media. I give it a 6/10. Glad I watched it, but all three of the leads did nothing for me. Maybe if Blake Lively showed her cans I'd give it a 6.5. The love triangle was hard to believe, narration was flat, and I didn't really buy the relationship between Salma Hayak and her kid. There was a few cool shots, artistically speaking. I guess if he went a more Natural Born Killers route in terms of cinemetography I'd have been happier. Guess the mushrooms finally wore off.

all the lead roles were terrible, especially Taylor Kitsch. jesus christ, he can't act for shit. the premise of the film is decent. i'm always down for watching a flick involving sex, violence, the cartel (more violence) and copious amounts of ganja but the acting was horrid. off the top of my head, Blow and Traffic are much better.

Not seen anything by him in a while, and now looking at his IMDB page, I know why. He's definitely got some great ones under his belt (NBK, The Doors), but it looks like he's turning into Francis Ford Coppola. Make a classic... then turds only.
