Lag on mame got worse after new graphics card upgrade

Post by shortyUKEN »

Hi. I apologize in advance if I'm posting in the wrong topic area or if a post like this already exists, I just couldn't find an answer using the search engine.

So, straight to the point. I have a pc that I bought in 2009, pretty basic stuff back then; core 2 duo E4400, 2gb RAM and integrated gpu, no doubt pretty basic stuff. Since then I've been playing all the pre-2003 Cave games just fine, at full speed. When I got hold of mame 0.143 (not sure if i that's one) to play ESPGaluda and the other more recent stuff (Mushi's) I saw my machine just couldn't handle the burden, at least not in full speed. Galuda 1 is still playable but the Mushi games ran kinda bad..

So last week I finally put my hands on a more decent card, a GeForce GTX 550 Ti, and could finally play some current gen PC games, which by the way, are running just fine. But the thing is, when I finally decided to run mame after the upgrade to supposedly play Futari BLK at full speed, I was surprised, not to say dismayed, the the emulation of said games got even worse. If at later stages Futari BLK was running at about 85 to 80% of the full speed, now is running at less than 70%. Galuda 2, which was totally playable at least in the first 2 stages, is now a fucking mess running at about 60% of the speed from the get-go. I even tried different mame versions, like slow poke, but to no avail, since before the upgrade all of the mame versions I had delivered more or less the same performance.

So, what do I do guys? Would it be the case of adjusting the NVidia Control Panel to obtain the desired performance, or is my pc still a piece of garbage with a decent graphics card plugged in? If it is the former case, would someone here lend me a hand at adjusting the card's settings, because I'm not tech-savvy at all. Any help will be welcome.

EDIT: Here follows my machine specs:

CPU Core 2 duo E4400 2.0 GHZ
2gb RAM
Geforce GTX 550 Ti with 1gb of Ram

Thank you guys in advance!

(moved to hardware so the correct crowd can see it /mod)

Emulator speed has more to do with your processor I believe, though I'm not sure why improving your graphics card would make it worse.

Emulator speed depends completely on your CPU.

Which OS do you have?

Maybe your new driver for the GPU is the problem(?)

Please post screen caps of the settings you're using in MAME UI.

Yeah guys, I was already suspecting about that, since for today's standards, my processor's pretty shitty.
Van Bruce, currently my machine runs on Win Xp, don't know which version.

Anyways, thanks for the ultra fast feedback, I apreciate. :)

what kind of PSU do you have (wattage?)

i know that it sounds pretty impossible, but i have seen / experienced people having computers underperform because of weak PSU.

even if not, you might want to check your voltages.

I think that doesn't seem to be the case brother, since I also acquired a new psu along for the very reason of acquiring the new video card, but thanks for the tip bro.

Forgive me for my noobiness bro, but where do I find those settings you're talking about, an how do I get there?

And two more question for you guys:
How powerful does a cpu have to be to play those games at 100% speed? Name the processors if you will.
Do you think an overclock would be a good a idea? Cause I assume a new processor wouldn't be affordable to me at the moment. Please tell me about the cost-efficiency and about the pros and cons of such a task.

Thanks again.

Have you updated the video card drivers to the most recent version? The driver disc that comes with video cards are always out of date.

Well, are you sure the PSU was enough to drive the whole system? If the PSU and the graphics card driver were the only things that got changed, it would be reasonable to look to those first.

In MAME UI, go to Options -> Default Game Options

Specifically the "Display" and "Advanced" tabs.
