Wii Shmups

Post by shmuppyLove »

So I've got the Ultimate Shooting Collection (moar like Ultimate Milestone Collection, amirite?) and Shikigami III for Wii, what other shmups are there?

Preferably native Wii titles only -- I know of a couple good Gamecube ones, and of course there are a few decent emulators as well.

Gradius Rebirth

I also suggest jailbreaking your Wii, then importing Milestone shooting collection 2 for Illevo and Radirgy Noa.

Blast Works has 4 of Kenta Cho's shooters as unlockables, though the main game isn't that great in my opinion.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Borderliner, but Sin & Punishment 2 is the absolute best the Wii has to offer in my opinion.

I've heard that the Chuuka Taisen games (localized as Monkey King & Saint) are pretty okay, about on the level of most console-exclusive Genesis shmups. I'd grab 'em if they're really cheap.

Does native titles exclude downloadable content?

If it doesn't, Super Star Soldier is available on the virtual console, and is quite a lot of fun. Great tunes, too.

WiiWare titles are ok, Virtual Console I'll say is excluded, since they're all just ports anyway.

I was originally going to say "Wii-exclusive", but I don't want to rule out games that are on other platforms, but I didn't want to open the flood-gates for VC titles either.

I have SNES9x GX running so there are some decent titles there -- I think I'm going to give SDL MAME Wii a go and see if it can actually run anything decent ... they do have CPS2 games listed as working, not sure what the speed is like ...

Don't waste your time with SDL Mame Wii. Pretty much anything decent crashes the console or runs like shit.

Yeah I kind of figured as much.

I'm also bummed that the other console emus don't appear to be as advanced as SNES9x GX ... loading from SMB share is the greatest thing EVAR

Taiseiou was actually the Japanese version of Saint, which was appropriately cancelled.

Also add:

SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1
Namco Museum Megamix
Namco Museum Remix
Space Invaders Get Even (WiiWare)

I really haven't dug through available WiiWare, other than downloading specific games, because I find the interface to be annoying, so there may be other shmup'ish games in there. Japan got Phalanx on WiiWare, though.

Bit.trip Fate (wiiware or in Bit.trip Complete). Reminds me, I need to try it on hard mode. The other bit.trips are also heavily inspired by shmups.

The current version (not the Linux-based one that crashes on literally anything) runs Mahou Daisakusen without its sprite layer but will run early games like Galaga just fine. Just nothing past the late 80s pretty much. For some reason some of the drivers are still included in the build even though none of the games in it work such as the toaplan2.c, obviously fault of the guy who made it (Toad King if memory serves) not bothering to do anything with it.

A good tip though: GET GENESIS PLUS GX. There's plenty of good Megadrive shmups that exist (that sadly I know very few of) and its emulation is actually better than Kega Fusion now.

Oh, and depending on your taste there's also OpenTyrianWii.

I will second that Sin & Punishment 2: Star Successor is probably the best game the Wii can produce. It's practically a shmup, and uses the WiiMote and nunchuk in an intuitive, non-gimmicky way.

Lords of Thunder is on wiiware and is worth your money. Kind of a pain to emulate it.
IGMO - Poorly emulated, never beaten.

Confirmed. After reading this thread, I picked up these two and BlastWorks for about two bucks apiece. Monkey King & Saint both play like mediocre xblig titles. So the price is right. I might give Saint another shot before I turn it in.. it's kinda like lords of thunder (or gates... I can never remember which is which)... if you squint. At least you get secondary weapons... Monkey King controlled slow as crap - I don't even get it. Anyone manage to find enjoyment with these? Am I doin it wrong? Surprised UFO even localized them.. must be popular in Nippon or something.

Played a few minutes of BlastWorks. Am I wrong, or is it just Tumiki Fighters? I'm assuming K. Cho made some scratch off of this.

If your emulator of choice doesn't read disc images, you can just mount it in a virtual drive such as DAEMON Tools. Then all you need is BIOS.
I've never experienced any problems with Ootake emulating PCE CD games. With Kega Fusion some games on CDs require perfect sync, but it may be only a problem on VERY slow computers.

I don't think anybody bothered with Saint but the consensus seems to be that Monkey King is a terrible game and one of the most dull shmups ever commercially released. I have no idea why anyone would recommend it.

I don't think that Monkey King is necessarily a "terrible" game. For what is there, it's reasonably well made and not some slapped-together POS. However, it's extremely underwhelming and horribly repetitive. Then again, if anyone was/is a fan of Taito's Chuka Taisen games, they should be used to this. Saint, on the other hand, is crap, despite appearing to run on the same engine.

Radirgy Noah has its own separate Wii port in addition to being on Milestone Shooting Collection 2.

Anyone have any information on this one? Was browsing Wii stuff and it came up, however I don't see any topics on it here. Based on images I've found, it appears to be an arena shmup of some sort.

If you get one of these, Megamix is the one to go with since it is pretty much the exact same game, but with added games. Only Remix has Mii support, though.

I know it's an old thread, but you can play WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Party Game$! on your Wii. Isn't there some shmupping to do in that one?

From what I read about Blast Works, if it was on Super Famicom or Japanese Saturn and had "STG" or "Dezaemon" in the name, typing it on shmups forum would be cooler.

S&P:SS is fantastic. (I would not recommend playing it for score though.)

You can play the stages you like best for the score. "Stage Select" and all that.
