Hey guys, just picked up a Raiden II board, and I'm getting a really high pitched ringing when the game is running, the ringing gets louder as the sound pot is adjusted. I checked out the whole board for shitty connections, but I only managed to find one...
It doesnt even look like this thing was on the original board judging by the way it was soldered..

Wow, that's weird looking. My board does not have that, just for what it's worth. Can you see what pins it's soldered to? Perhaps the owner attached that to fix some other sound problem and introduced that ringing (I don't know what capacitors do to audio signals, so I may be totally off-base).

pretty bizarre to just add a cap like that. personally, i'd remove it just to see what changes.

Actually, this just made me go hook up my Raiden II board again. I think I have the exact same problem as you 
When I got my board, it had no pot for the volume, so I used to just play it with no music. Recently someone soldered a pot on for me, and I never got around to try it. So now that I have, I notice that only a small range of pot angles work, and most of them get all crackly. If I get it just right, I can hear the music and effects fine, but there is a loud ringing over it.
I'll have to check some stuff out soon then >_>

yeah, I'm going to try that tonight.. so, I removed the capacitor, and the ringing just got louder.
after re-soldering the capacitor, the ringing dimmed down.
the capacitor is currently a 10 microFarad capacitor, would using a cap with a higher capacitance dim the sound more?

soooo, tried a HUGE range of caps and none of them made the noise any quieter. though the presence of a capacitor still makes the noise dimmer than without a cap at all.
I'm gonna build a low pass filter, to pretty much cut out the high treble range of the board.

I see a "tk" cap in there and those are the pesky ones that commonly fail on Neo Geo boards.

one of my caps exploded!
i replaced it again, and it exploded again!
im definitely doing something very wrong, but i dont know what. I replaced the caps with caps with identical capacitance. although the voltage marking on the ones I used were higher than the original. is that a problem?

So I seem to have made some progress in trying to find a solution to this problem. I was searching the web and I found this on some sketchy-ass website:
Notice that he is referring to pins 10 and 11 that I found that out of place capacitor soldered to, I'm gonna go ahead and cut that pin tomorrow to see if that fixes the problem. I'll let you guys know how it turns out!7/9/03 Repairing a Raiden II PCB
This board was from a friend of mine. It played fine but the sound had a massivly noisy hum/squeal. Kind of like EEEEEEEEEEE! OK I cant type what I heard. Poking around with the scope I found that on pin 10 and 11 (which are tied together) of the hybrid chip (the SIPP package that is potted and has components within) in the sound circuit had a sawtooth wave on it. And it matched the sound I was hearing. I did not have a replacement chip but I found that if I cut pin 10 away from the PCB, the hum was gone and the sound level was OK. So it is sort of repaired for now.

It works! No more squealing!
However, I'm noticing now that the OKI isn't making any sound effects nor drums. Does yours? I'm not sure if this "fix" caused it, or if my board was already like that (which I can entirely believe >_>).

I just looked up a video of Raiden II on youtube, and I noticed the drums.
Turns out my board NEVER had drums, so I didn't notice anything after the fix

Sounds like something I had to find a solution to recently on Edward Randy.
That cap someone put on was an attempt to get rid of the sound by using a low pass filter. Pretty crap attempt too as they've used a polarised electrolytic and you really want to be doing it with a very small value unpolarised. Having said that this won't work if the noise is really loud, are you able to youtube it? If either of you can't find someone local and don't particularly value the board feel free to send it to me and I'll replace the OKI chip in the name of science.

The noise is definitely fairly loud. It's louder than the game, at least. Unfortunately, I'm not really too willing to part with it; I can deal without the sound effects just fine, for now. Maybe at some point in the future I'll consider it.
