KADE - New multi device encoder project- less than $30

The KADE encoder is about ready to launch as a KickStarter project and we're really pleased to announce this to the Shmups community who will hopefully support the project and contribute to it's future development.

Our aim is to make it easy for arcade enthusiasts, stick builders and retro gamers to interact with their computers, consoles and DIY arcade projects. This is made possible with a ground breaking combination of open source hardware, and software.

Right now I have a couple of KADEs in my tate cab witching between xBox1, PC, PS2, and JP x360 (with $7 DX.com converter) and I'm loving it.

Once you have the KADE installed on a cab or in a stick, how does the USB connector from the KADE get connected to the systems ? I get it on a MAME setup or a PS3 where you just use a USB extension cable, but what do I do on a PS1 or PS2 ? And what about the 360 where even standard USB controllers don't work ?

Maybe you could elaborate a little bit on this ? I felt this information was a bit left out from the vid and the project page (or I just overlooked it).

Thanks for the feedback. I think something related to this needs to go in our FAQ section on KS and on our kadevice.com site. This is my tate cab.


The PS2 connector is the silver cable which is wired into the lower terminals on the KADE PCB. This gives the KADE either USB or PS2 out depending on how it is programmed. I convert USB to xbox 1 with coinops as my primary system because it boots in less than 10 seconds and is a super easy UI for friends and family. It emulates most older shmups very well (gets a little slow on Guwange era games if you use anything other than easy settings) and has native ports of Shikigami no Shiro, Shikigami no Shiro II, and Psyvariar that have tate modes. If I want to play on my PS2 or x360, I reprogram the KADE to PS2 mode and plug in the PS2 into whatever I'm playing. I unplug the USB as I/O is happening off the PCB board. This sounds like a bunch of work but it isn't a big deal. From my experience at the Denver Shmup meetup, I can say it takes me less time to switch consoles or PC than the JAMMA board swaps I saw.
One of the top things I want to work on is making the KADE so it can hold firmware for multiple devices without needing to be reprogramed. We don't want to make any promises at this point but I'm optimistic.

I should also note that adding a PS2 to do KADE testing was a WAY better add than I expected! Having ports + arrange modes for Ibara, DoDonPachi Daioujou, Espgaluda, homura, Raiden III, and Mushihimesama is just heaven.

I do use an adapter. I bought the cheapest one I could find that had OK reviews just to see if it worked with the KADE. I hadn't planned on pulling my x360 padhacks out of my cab but this thing is decent so I'm using it for 360 gaming. I have a broken wired x360 controller I got for $3 plugged in to manage the security part of it.

I'm testing encoders from KADE in PS2 mode to all sorts of systems. I did a short video of the KADE in PS2 mode switching between x360, PS2, and xBox. I don't really need a converter for xBox but I figured I should make sure it works. I'm using the cheap x360 encoder for this video.
