hello All,
I'm using a HORI REAL ARCADE PRO 3 VLX PREMIUM VEWLIX fighting stick on my PS3 (Yes I love it), anyway I wanted to give it a whirl with Gradius V a PS2 Disc based version of the game. Now with my normal PS3 controller the game works fine. But when I try to use the Vewlix as soon as I launch a PS2 title from a disc it is shuts down the Vewlix (even though I have been navigating the menus with the Viewlix . I even tried setting up the controller. I can't play any of my Disc based PS2 games it seems. I can play Raiden 3 (a PS2 game) which was downloaded from the PSStore. As soon as a PS2 Disc based game starts the green light turns off and the controller goes dead. Can anybody help me out here? What am I not doing? Is there a special setting I should be using? Does the PS3 do this to other Arcade sticks when playing PS2 Disc games?

Hmmm, I'll have to try booting up a PS2 game disc on a PS3 slim 2nd gen console with a Hori RAP 3 SA setup and see if the same problem comes up. On the backside of the factory box, it does mention that such a Hori PS3 arcade stick is meant for use with PS3 games.
What type of PS3 console are you using btw, Gingerzilla? Is it the 1st gen, 2nd gen or the newest 3rd gen PS3 console?
I do have a Pelican branded PS2 to PS3 USB convertor but that was primarily designed for the 1st-gen PS3 console (unless further firmware updates have rendered it useless). It first appeared on the market back in May of 2007.

(Most) PS2 games can't use USB sticks on the original console, so it's unlikely that ones using the back-compat mode could as well. I'm guessing the reason that the one you downloaded worked, is because it was ported to PS3, rather than just running off the back-compat mode.

Is this something Hori could fix or is it something that Sony should patch in an update?
What is the scope of work involved?
If it is Sony then I will bring it to their attention on their boards. If it is Hori I will send them a message.
I can't have 4 arcade sticks (XB,PS3,PS2,DC) as I'm running low on real-estate in my living room. It's annoying enough that I can't use my Vewlix for my Xbox let alone the system I bought it for.
A lot of 3rd party sticks and control pads are not compatable with the PS2 disc playing on the PS3. You best bet would probably be the mod that stick to have a PS1/Ps2 board in there with the old PS1/PS2 cable and then connect that to a PS2 to Ps3 controller converter.
Are you running the latest firmware on your PS3? I believe they have improved the USB compatibility with PS2 and PS1 games in later firmwares, but it also depends on the joystick. Some PS3 joysticks will specifically say they will work with PS2 disc titles, others do not.
Edit: Just did a couple quick tests - I tossed in Castle Shikigami 2 (a PS2 disc) and Street Fighter Alpha 3 (a PS1 disc) and my MC Cthulhu joystick worked perfectly with both without even need to remap inputs.
So, I suspect you're on an older firmware, because I'm pretty sure the HRAP 3 should have b/c support.
As an aside, the PS3 is the best PS1 and PS2 ever lol
