Games to play whilst intoxicated

Post by Moniker »

Not every game is fit for use while intoxicated. The tendency towards motion sickness increases, reflexes are slowed, complex gameplay becomes impossible, rage quits are much more common.

So, what are your favorite games to play while under the influence?

For my part:
Dark Cloud 2 (best drunk game ever)
The Persona Series
Just Cause 2
Battlefield 3
Simulation Racers (esp. GT3, Forza Horizon).
The freaks are rising through the floor.

I mainly just play visual novels and dating sims. And the occasional Windjammers and Ninja Gaiden for the rage.

In all seriousness, best drunk/stoned game ever is Daytona USA in the arcade.

I dont even drink, but I act crazier than a drunk person while playing windjammers.

Honestly a few weeks ago we beat the original Mega Man while quite intoxicated. Granted we cheesed the Yellow Devil, but we drunkenly beat the rest of the game legit. Actually pretty much any platformer is a fun drunk game.

Something mindless, gratifying, and not too terribly difficult.

Red Star, Baldur's Gate II, Castle Crashers, Crazy Taxis (kind of difficult, but lots of fun still drunk,) Lego Star Wars, etc.

Arcade games. Specifically Arcade Racers and 2,5D beat 'em ups like final fight, double dragon etc.

When I was younger I used to play counter strike and day of defeat while drunk as hell. It was quite fun and every round was tard rush round

I usually play the House of the Dead series or any other rail shooters when I'm drinking. It's best to do it at an arcade on a machine with a heavy gun controller.

If I'm drinking at a bar with that kind of cab I tend to feel the same way. Unfortunately it's usually Buck Hunter and not a proper game.

I had a couple of drunken buddies play Sunset Riders for the first time on arcade in my garage the other night. Brought a tear to me eye.

My local arcade has a strict no alcohol rule, which is a shame, but I doubt it would help my Strikers 1999 skills.

Been playing a lot of Worms drunk with my housemates. The other day I got so drunk I literally didn't know which way was up or down. Ended up winning, felt awesome, then realised everyone had long since passed out. Woke up six hours later in a mire of agony.

Back in my stoner days used to stage elaborate Sonic 2 tournaments. Only won once, but the competition was fierce. Had players from all round East Anglia contend. Was a sight to behold.

Fighting Games!

Even better: Anime-style fighting games that have ultra complicated moves that you are never able to pull off. If you have a second player it's just hilarious. I love to play Arcana Heart 3 when i am smashed for example .

161 in 1 multicart on the cab.

Edit: and yes, I mean the 161 in 1 itself. When too drunk, it's just pass-time enough to browse through all the games and clones and yeah I'm a sad fuck and I know it... :)

I don't think "gaming sickness" (I have never experienced really) is the same as motion sickness (which I haven't experienced either). The latter comes from sensation of being carried away without moving your body around (I think some bad prenatal/infancy memories may be at work here), whereas the former occurs when you don't go anywhere, but the screen tries to convince you otherwise.
Reportedly, good for gaming sickness is smaller screen, higher framerate and... nothing heavy on stomach and liver (such as fat food).

These days when it comes to drunk gaming, I like Excite Truck best, but like with so many Wii games, you need to experiment what position suits you best (a hint - not every position good for holding a gamepad is quite as good for motion controls). Also, the game's fast-paced and the framerate isn't particulary high, so being further from the TV might help.
In the past, I used to play GTA2 and Vice City on the PC (keyboard works just fine in 2 and it's freeware). The thing is, Vice City also has fast cars and it's optimised for 30 fps, thus I suggest using any extra power to apply some draw distance hack instead of higher framerate. Furthermore, I recommend playing Vice City with mouse and keyboard (makes for easier combat) and using the gamepad only for driving/flying (the cars work about as well with the keyboard, but I just like driving with a joypad; also, the helicopter with keyboard is not fun).

Stoned gaming is another story altogether, but I have some good memories of Metal Gear Solid on the PC (very decent port even with the default keyboard controls) and Onimusha 2, Diablo (co-op on the PSX, single player on PC), Heroes of Might and Magic III.

P.S. I think BurgerTime Deluxe and Game B/Bomber Man of Dynablaster/Atomic Punk/Bomber Boy played on the GBA SP would be my game of choice if I wanted to play a handheld game while intoxicated nowadays. Mayhaps Balloon Kid for a change. Maybe time attacking in Burnout 2 with the bumper view if I wanted 60 fps on the TV.
P.P.S. Emulated Chrono Trigger makes for THE ultimate gaming on weed experience.
P.P.P.S. Max Payne 1&2 on the PC.

Oh yeah, as for smartphone games, Kairosoft's output (Game Dev Story, etc) are pretty kickass drunk games. I have to smoke outside, so that's what I play during smoke breaks. Perfect little 5-10 min interludes.
