Holiday Season Retro Tournament - main thread

Post by system11 »

Hi all,

I'd like to announce a small tournament, but it's something different.

----------------------------------------------------------------

WHAT THE HELL IS THIS?

As you can guess from the title we're not going to be seeing much here in the way of chaining systems, or medal building, or suiciding, or any of that modern shit. The real winning here is taking part, we're going to be playing a few things that we're not used to.

Starting this Friday 8PM GMT, I'll be announcing a series of 4 games, one per week. For each game I'll post a topic, you get until the next game is announced to post your highest score in there. The rules, such as they are, are simple:

1) Dip switch settings and specific romset name will be specified for each game, mostly this will be whatever the defaults should be. You can play using PCBs or emulation.

2) The top 20 scores will get points - 20 for 1st place down to 1 for 20th place.

3) You can join the tournament at any time - obviously you'll be at a points disadvantage, you can skip games too - same thing happens.

4) A tie-break game will be announced in the unlikely event that two players tie first place.

5) SHOOT THINGS UNTIL YOU ARE DEAD! :) There may be a (very) borderliner or two in there, but there will be an element of shooting and an element of doing so until you are dead.

I will not claim to have vast knowledge about whether certain titles can be played for 20 hours straight. If this happens then too bad, but I will look into it for each one first ;) I'm picking games because they're old and obscure - it's purely for fun. I'm also going to enter myself because someone needs to set the low bar on the scores, may aswell be me.

I shall enter and make no promises about actually playing anything.

Ok, let's try.

But by shooting things until you are dead you mean non-stop shooting?

Welp, maybe the games featured on the tournament will all be survival = score.

Xevious is old enough, will it be there? Will something similar be there? Who knows. Two of the games I'm pretty certain on so far, the rest I'm still deciding :)
