Online Multiplayer of Score Rush (free beta)

Post by Xonatron »

Online Multiplayer of Score Rush (free beta) is out... HTML5 / Turbulenz:
https://turbulenz.com/games/scorerush-mp

Jason and I are playing it right now. To join a session, sign in (I use Facebook) or play as guest, click the multiplayer icon at the bottom right, and click to join the games.

And leave feedback to Turbulenz here:
https://turbulenz.com/

EDIT: TIPS: Maximize your browser, use an Xbox 360 controller (bumpers are slow-down), close side windows, click bottom of screen icons to bring up leaderboards and multiplayer games.

EDIT2: The Single Player version of Score Rush on HTML5 / Turbulenz, also a free beta, has badges. You may wish to check them out: https://turbulenz.com/games/scorerush

And please use an Xbox 360 controller, so you can rock at the game!
Note the bumpers are slowdown controls. ;)

Ok guys, done for the night.
Hope we can see some of you later.

NOTE: The game is still in BETA... and it allows people to join in mid-game! So we're analyzing what works and doesn't.

Good game, DJ I... I'll see if Jason will join us if you wish to keep playing. You can leave messages almost facebook style on the Turbulenz site itself. It's really cool.

This is actually a lot of fun! My only two complaints so far are 1) you can't turn off the screen shaking effect (this would be nice to have as an option as the default seems to have a lot of disorienting shaking going on) and 2), you can't change the controls (I'd actually like arrows to be selectable as movement keys). Otherwise it's awesome.

Actually you can turn off the background effects, change the colour of the bullets and tweak a few other things in the options.

Haha, just finished that game with you Roo. I was that blue guest. :)

The game runs a lot better than I thought, although things can get pretty choppy when there's a lot of action going on in the screen. I'm not sure if it's my browser or if it has to do with the game itself. Also, I'd appreciate it if you could move the lives and bombs count somewhere else on the screen, or at least make it so that they fade when someone gets close to it. It makes tracking myself a bit more difficult. Other than that, it's really good fun. I'll go ahead and make an account when I get some time later.

That match was a lot of fun! It runs pretty poorly on my machine too; I'm messing around with turning off the Glow effect and FX to help things, but disabling the special effects does not seem to stop the screen shake effect which seems to cause a lot of the slowdown. :(

I also think I'd like the option to have the right mouse button be selectable as Bomb OR Slowdown; having it as bomb as nice, but I find it easier to bomb with my thumb (whereas holding slowdown with my pinkie is a bit awkward).

Can't figure out how to use my 360 controller with the game ... is it natively supported somehow or do I need to use joy2key?

My guess is Joy2Key would be the easiest solution (if it's not working natively for some reason, apparently it does?).

I don't... think it's my keyboard that's doing this, but is anyone finding when tapping a movement key that it gets 'stuck' for a second as opposed to only dodging slightly? Not sure if this is lag or something causing this, but when I type 'D' normally I've never had it stick, and I swear I've seen this twice with movement to the right. edit: probably something involving lag and/or my machine being crappy, I've seen this happen with other directions of movement too.

Aaaaand, first game crash. Game just froze in a match with Cagar and a guest, we seemed to all get booted for some reason around the middle of the game.

Jesus this game is LOTS of fun! If only arrow keys could be used for movement..
I imagine the 6th difficulty is near impossible?

Hey guys! Thanks for all of the feedback. Super happy you are enjoying this game! A few notes:
  • It's in beta. We are listening to all feedback!
  • Screen shake doesn't cause slow down. Yes it disorients you, but without such effects the game will appear lame. We turned this into a positive: During screen shakes you are invincible. You never die during any disorientation. Expert players can use this to their advantage
  • Keys shouldn't ever stick, so if they do, it's a keyboard / browser / game / operating system issue. Please continue to report any issues!
  • The game runs 60 fps on my machine. It is heavily optimized. How fast it goes for you depends on your PC and your browser. Currently Chrome runs the Turbulenz engine the best. :)
  • To use the 360 controller, just have it plugged in when you launch the game (the big play button). Or try restarting your browser. It should all just work. Please note that mapping the joystick to keys will NOT give you the proportional aiming and control that the proportional sticks natively give! This is why keys are bad.
  • The arrow keys for movement -- this was a hard one. I am used to arrow keys to move as well, but then there is nothing for the aiming. Of course, if you use keys + mouse, you'll want to use either WASD or Arrows to move. So we'll have to think about how to properly convey this -- one thing that is very difficult in game design is how to please everyone with 3 different control schemes and have it all just work without anyone reading anything  (because gamers/people never read).

Thanks so much for trying this out!! =) 8)

Move with arrow keys, shoot with WASD? Also, it would be nice to know:
-How many bombs other players currently have (so if you need to help them by bombing)
-What stage/boss is currently going

Otherwise, the game is fantastic!

People who play shmups do. Generally speaking, non-custom or restricted control options in a shmup are a no-no. And, on a related note, the thing about having invulnerability during screen shakes should also be noted in the help section.
How many bombs other players currently have (so if you need to help them by bombing)
Bomb and Life stock is SHARED amongst the whole group (when a new person joins you get + 2 lives for the group, +1 bomb anytime someone dies). which means if you're a loser like me, dying constantly eats up the group's stock :p

If you get a gameover and are spectating, when another player gets an extend item, the spectating player will instantly rejoin the game.
-What stage/boss is currently going
Agreed, hard to tell what's a large health boss or just a big enemy.

Very nice so far. The screen-long lines when using mouse aiming are really helpful to keep track of where we're aiming. I've had an issue with losing track of the crosshair in similar games.

Finally got it to recognize my controller. Off to try again. :)

Ah okay, I managed to get my controller to work. I was using Firefox and I even restarted my browser but it wouldn't get my Xbox 360 pad to work, but I just launched Chrome and the game detects it now. Just letting you know. :P

If you add people as friends on the site, you can invite them directly to private matches (and avoid having the odd guest come in just to use up all your lives). Awesome job NMNBing the final boss on expert, SS360, by the way.

Haha yeah that random player was an ass. We had a perfect run going until he came in and quite literally used up all of our resource stock. I'll see if I can add you but I'm done playing for now. I'll end off tonight with that NMNB.
Good playing with you Roo!

Thanks for the tremendous feedback.
To address some points:
  • There are help screens, but they are currently missing from this build. They will explain about invincibility during screen shakes.
  • We are brain storming over possible fixes for the team-effort seemingly being reduced to the weakest member. We think we have a solution.
  • Boss health bars may solve the "which boss am i on?" problem.
  • HUD getting in the way is a known issue.
  • Xbox controller not working in Firefox may be Firefox's fault -- browsers are very slow to catch up on gaming, sadly, but we'll try and fix this.
Thanks!! Onward. 8)

Awesome. Keep going, I can see myself spending hours on this game.
EDIT:
Suggestion: Make enemies which cause screen-shaking RED. Sometimes, it's hard to see/know when the screen is going to shake, I think this is a good way to make it more clear.
Suggestion2: Change explosion-colors to black/white instead of blue/white. Blue player gets unfair disadvantage because his shit will blend to these explosions.
