Who's got it? I picked up a copy at Wal-Mart on tuesday, and the wife's been glued to it ever since. So far it seems pretty okay, and while it adds plenty it seems to be missing something at the same time. There are lots of tiny physics tweaks that seem to make the game much easier. Crashes happen less often, as does getting rebounded when trying to push up a vertical surface. Direction switching is much easier to actuate, and I'm doing it accidentally all the time.
The levels are pretty cool...lots more stuff to pick up, just a much higher object density. It looks like there will be a higher scoring ceiling because of the object counts...more improvement possibilities between a first playthrough and a superior one. At the same time though, the challenge of finding the right path has been softened, because no matter where you roll you're nearly guaranteed to pick up a ton of shit.
The music is not as good as the first, IMO. It feels like they made a big batch of songs for the first game, picked the best ones, and the leftovers got shunted to the sequel. Not a bad soundtrack, but lacking compared to the first game.
I don't care for the level select at all...even the first game left me wanting for a quick level select menu, and the sequel is much worse in this regard. Also, the king never fucking shuts up. His inane speeches are longer than ever, making me want for a King Disable option. There's also mid-level loading, but the levels are much bigger so that's no surprise.
Multiplayer is much more robust than in the first game, and is probably the most substantial improvement.
Overall it seems like a worthy sequel, but the massive object counts and easy-fied physics make it feel more like a fan service than anything. They have maximized the fun of rolling but taken away the teeth that the first one had.

I've had the game three days...I didn't think I'd like it because a lot of people say it pales compared to the first one...but after ten minutes that went straight out the window.
I like the music except one song (I believe it plays in the crane stage). I'm not sure what everyone was expecting in this category, but what's there I pretty much enjoy and it suits the style of the game fine.

Start button, perhaps? Although you can't skip everything (end of level comes to mind), most of it is skippable...Also, the king never fucking shuts up. His inane speeches are longer than ever, making me want for a King Disable option.

now tighter than your sister
Right now I'm pretty disappointed with the game as a whole; music's lamer and I hate this "We love Katamari!" bullshit going on in the game (it feels like one of those "Oh, it was only a dream" story kind of games, except people were actually playing the game..). Also, is it just me or is every reviewer full of absolute horseshit when they say the game's a lot harder? I'll admit, I had a somewhat difficult time with a few of the stages in the first game, but so far I'm ace-ing everyone of them in this one without a failure yet.
So now, Katamari 1 absolutely beats the crap out of 2. But then again, a part of me expected this, because you know it's not going to feel as fresh as the first.
The BGM select in the first one woulda been great.
racetrack level owns.

Yeah I know you can skip a lot of the king, but not all of him, and it won't let you skip the fans' little speeches either. I guess what I want is just a score attack menu that I can bring up at any time by mashing L2 or something, that will let me access any level/challenge I've already unlocked without any fuss or pointless gibberish. It seems like I spend half the time navigating this ungainly walk-around world that could be replaced with a simple menu. It's form over function in the extreme.crithit5000 wrote:Start button, perhaps? Although you can't skip everything (end of level comes to mind), most of it is skippable...
Yeah, the first one is definitely more challenging, regarding both physics and level design.LoneSage wrote:Also, is it just me or is every reviewer full of absolute horseshit when they say the game's a lot harder?
