Hi,
I'm having some trouble deciding on what to buy and everyone here seems to be the most knowledgeable about the topic of upscaling older games. I'm trying to play my old Ps2 games on my 720p HDTV. The only problem is that they look terrible on the newer high definition televisions. For 480i games like on the ps2 would the Dvdo Edge do a better job or the XRGB-Mini? I'd truly appreciate any help or advice anyone can give me.
Dvdo Edge Vs XRGB-mini Framemeister
Re: Dvdo Edge Vs XRGB-mini Framemeister
I read that earlier and from what I can understand the XRGB Mini is the best all around. Although that page mainly talks about its use for 240p signals. So I thought I'd ask for a second opinion from someone who has used it for a 480i signal from a ps2 on an HDTV.
Re: Dvdo Edge Vs XRGB-mini Framemeister
You should look into modding your PS2 and the various ways of forcing 480p video output, that's going to make a larger video quality difference than a scaler will.
I have a XRGB-mini, but I just connect my PS2 directly to my TV because there's less lag that way and I don't see the big difference in image quality. I mostly use my PS2 in 480p mode though.

Re: Dvdo Edge Vs XRGB-mini Framemeister
I've done this and all I've found is that it shrinks the image so much it is not even worth it. I'd rather have a scaler and from what I've read the XRGB mini with its scanlines can reproduce what the image looks like on a CRT Tv on an HDTV. I would just like someone to comfirm that it works and works well before I spend the $500 for the Framemeister.ZellSF wrote:You should look into modding your PS2 and the various ways of forcing 480p video output, that's going to make a larger video quality difference than a scaler will.

Uh? Forcing 480p does not shrink the image.ijed wrote:I've done this and all I've found is that it shrinks the image so much it is not even worth it.ZellSF wrote:You should look into modding your PS2 and the various ways of forcing 480p video output, that's going to make a larger video quality difference than a scaler will.

It sometimes results in forced 4:3, but I've never seen it shrink the image.
Are you trying to go above 480p (720p, 1080i, 1080p)? Because you shouldn't do that.
Re: Dvdo Edge Vs XRGB-mini Framemeister
For 480i content both processors are good. The Edge is much easier to use than the Mini and clearly geared towards home cinema applications. The Edge has a scaling engine for movies, while the XRGB scales graphics considerably better. Since the Mini is MUCH better for 240p though, this is more likely the striking argument. On the other hand, you might be able to pick up an Edge under $300, so it's much cheaper than a Mini.

I did some comparisons here:- http://www.videogameperfection.com/av-g ... ture-test/
The article was about PAL material but the conclusions are largely relevant to all kinds of material.
If I was sane and only could have one video processor in my setup, it would definitely be the Edge (or one of it's big brothers like the VP50), as an all rounder its fantastic, it's pan/zoom controls are good (way better than the Minis) and it works great with film material, dvds and the like. it's 240p handing is correct, but the picture is poor, though it can be improved by attaching a Sync Strike and feeding in the 240p material through the RGBHV inputs.
remember here I'm talking about the DVDO Edge, the Edge Green does not support 240p/288p at all (unless they fixed the firmware now?)

Agreed, I love the GSM Mode Selector and similar tools, patching things Sony should have included from the start, thank heavens for jail-breaks!Uh? Forcing 480p does not shrink the image.

Re: Dvdo Edge Vs XRGB-mini Framemeister
It was a long while ago I used GSM. I'd rather just have something I can plug in and play without having to go through settings like in GSM. Besides GSM is still a beta and some games get the BSOD.BuckoA51 wrote:I did some comparisons here:- http://www.videogameperfection.com/av-g ... ture-test/

Re: Dvdo Edge Vs XRGB-mini Framemeister
On a modded system GSM can be set to launch off memory card, I have mine so that I just hold down a shoulder button when the PS2 starts up but I believe that is a special feature of the chip in my system. There will always be some games that don't work when you start doing non-standard things to them.
