ok I am really surprised at this, but I am very much enjoying Gundam 00 - I still think the chara design is horrible, but the mecha overall and backgrounds are lovely and I find the plot interesting, I'm not saying it's any LOTGH - but it does make you ask some questions.

Good news on the Blazing Transfer Student front, I think I should have the raws downloaded by tonigh and I went into /m subs IRC and managed to get what I think are the matching .srts for the files - one of them kindly started reseeding the 2nd OVA episode too :)

I just watched NGE TV and EoE for the first time while drinking the tears of my Nuruturd friends who happened to be sitting in the same room. I absolutely adored the concept, designs and the tonal shift. 26' also made my brain turn into tang.

Got my giant haul of Rightstuf black friday goodies. Just started their excellent Christmas sale as well. First day has a lot of items. Nothing that really intrigues me, though. First 40 episodes (that's all Animeigo did) of Yawara for 10 bucks is a pretty good steal, though.

So do we know when the next volume of Osayumi Punpun is due? And how long does it take to get scanlated usually?
I am pretty obsessed with this thing now, to the point where I am dreading the possible directions the story could go. I would like a little bit of happiness for these people. It's stupid, I know.

I have all of OVA 2 downloaded now (LD rip) the .srt I have don't match it timing wise, but when I get the OVA 1 completed I shall try to match them up with aikisub or wotever its called and try to make .mkv's of them both :)

Volume 11 goes for sale in three days (11/30). Hox seems to be busy these days, maybe it'll take a month or so.

Talking about Kazuhiko Shimamoto, I've been reading Moeyo Pen/Burning Pen.
Hot blooded mangaka action.

Got my first season set of Galaxy Express 999. Reallllly bare bones stuff. Not even chapter breaks, so if you want to skip the intro/end, you'll have to fast forward. Translation seems pretty good, and although my Japanese is shit, it still seems pretty solid. Picture/sound quality is the worst part. Very grainy, with small pops and crackles, but certainly not awful. Seems like they used the same release that Live-Evil subtitling group used. Still, for 40-50 bucks a set, it's about a dollar an episode, so I can't really complain. Really nice to just have it on DVD, even. Hopefully people will finally view the original series, now that the movies are out as well. Now, if only someone would pick up some Matsumoto manga...

I intend to start them, I loved the film, but I know undertaking to watch GE 999 series will be a massive undertaking of LOTGH proportions... :)

I'd imagine the kickback on such a "beam buster cannon" of the Knight of Gold mecha (as shown in the Five Star Stories film) would be quite massive as well (would the recoil shock dampeners be adequate enough to get the job done or will they exceed their maximum threshold limits?). Fascinating to learn that it's powered by solar technology from the ancient developers of long ago (harnessing the power of the sun for such WMD at it's best).

I have never heard of this - Imma check it though, though I usually prefer not too much of a 'fantasy' style in my sci-fi/mecha stuff...

Five Stars Stories is absolutely awesome and ranks high up there with Legend of Galactic Heroes as my favorite anime/manga series. The difference is that the Five Stars Stories anime is woefully inadequate to convey the amount of details and the sheer scale of the world Mamoru Nagano created. Many years ago I managed to get my hands on all the 26 English volumes released and most volumes have these extra pages telling about the world's history, culture, technology, even fashions, some of which are never really touched on in the story itself, but they are there just to build up the world and make it seem real. Very cool stuff.

If all you see is the FSS anime, you probably won't think it's all that great a series, so try to get your hands on the manga if you can. Though that may be easier said than done nowadays.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

I c - I shall definitely properly check it out

I watched first 2 eps of Rose Of Versailles and loved them, kinda weird because tbh on TV or even usually in film, I'm not a massive 'period drama' fan most of the time...

The Five Star Stories is a very convoluted story, but the designs are on the level of what you see in fashion - and that's either because Nagano Mamoru may have been at one time a designer himself or inspired by those kinds of drawings. It is very, very sleek and cool looking. I used to subscribe to NewType magazine back in the early to mid-90s just so I could see his installments. I also have a few of the collected tankobons... I actually bothered to keep those when I decided to trash the rest! 8) I know that at one time they were translated into English and had a short print run. They might be what you would consider a "collector's item" since they weren't popular and - I think - only sold at American Kinokuniya stores (at least here in California).
