Re: Bye Bye Twinkies
Such a freshly baked or fried donut certainly triumphs over a Twinkie any ol' day...as a donut lover myself. I like 'em glazed old fashioned donuts with some tasty 'n' cold chocolate milk to satisfy the ol' sweet tooth...hits the spot every time. There's a local indie donut shop that's open 24/7 for some freshly made donuts if it needed be. I recall when the Modesto, CA based Krispy Kreme donut shop shut down for good (as most donut lovers like the indie donut shops better and can certainly taste the difference).

Re: Bye Bye Twinkies
Krispy Kreme didn't manage to do themselves in completely (there's still a few scattered around here) but they certainly did some damage to the brand with their overexpansion. Can't say I'm a big fan; the things are so overly sweet that I don't think I can stand to eat more than 1 at a time these days.
Up here in the Seattle area, Top Pot donuts seem to be the popular ones these days, and at this point it's just a matter of time before they start expanding into other markets (I believe they already have them in Ralphs stores in CA). Then again, as far as snack cakes go, I prefer Little Debbies anyway.

So you only visit Krispy Kreme once per meal? I'm sure they commend your self-restraint!Vexorg wrote:I don't think I can stand to eat more than 1 at a time these days.

I can beat that --brentsg wrote:Nothing beats microwaved Honey Buns though.. (no, not GP related sorry)..
You take a honey cruller donut (or even that there honey bun), slice it in half, pop it under the broiler for a few minutes till it's golden brown, then drizzle some maple syrup and sprinkle some icing sugar on it.
Have this for breakfast, and you'll be JACKED for the entire day

My friend linked me to this.
Holy shit. That price is just absurd.
edit: It's gone now but it was selling for $10,000,000.00

Just search for twinkies on ebay, and set the sort to "highest first". Everyone's trying a bit too hard to outdo each other.

Re: Bye Bye Twinkies
One of my co-workers asked me if I was suffering from Twinkie withdrawl. I said I wasn't and told him that I had bought the very last box of Ding Dongs to sate my appetite during the downtime. They do freeze quite well past their initial "Sell By Date" as listed on the outer box packaging.
I'd buy a box of Twinkies at the asking sale price of a mere $2.50 & pop it in freezer...easy as pie. Aside from it's frozen state, it was the same ol' Twinkie as usual upon eating it. On the average, a frozen Hostess snack will keep for four to six months tops (long enough for them to re-appear back on the grocery shelves under new ownership indeed).
I wouldn't be surprised if the Mexican food giant, Gruma Bimbo, outright buys most (if not all) the Hostess snack IPs, they're a non-union company after all. (You might recall when Hershey's shut down all their American & Canadian factories & moved it's production facilities to Mexico -- overall candy appearance & quality control went out the window...Hershey had better quality control measures in place when they were based stateside easily to reject malformed candy bits not fit to sold at retail if it needed be. So be it.)

Re: Bye Bye Twinkies
One last loogie in the eye from management.
Who says this ain't the land of opportunity?
Let me make sure I've got this straight: to motivate the rank-and-file, you threaten, cattle-prod, and starve them. To motivate management, reward them handsomely for holding off from accepting a sweet deal someplace else for a little while (what a buncha troopers!). Oh, and cut their taxes too.In a statement overnight, Hostess said the bonuses are designed to keep top brass from leaving before winding down what's left of the company "quickly and cost-effectively."

Re: Bye Bye Twinkies
I have been part of a worker's union before years ago. If you didn't join and pay the monthly dues you would be shittalked and banned from social gatherings. You would be threatened that if anything ever happened nobody would have your back and given eat shit looks at every chance. At least 20% of the workers were slack as hell. When you had been there a certain number of years, even managers referred to you as unfirable. Some union reps aimlessly looked to nickel and dime the place to death, just as part of their job, not because it was making anything fair. There was one guy, the union president, who didn't even work for the company, he just got paid from union dues and tried to raise our wages constantly, which worked out to an unnoticeable raise per year coupled with a constant problem between the company and workers, always in negotiations like we hated each other about to get a divorce. If I had the money to open up a plant there is no way in hell it would be somewhere that allows unions.

I completely agree with you that Veganism is a religion (and I'll even take it a step further and call it an eating disorder, in my opinion). From an evolutionary perspective, we are made to be omnivors. I can understand people's personal convictions to become a vegetarian, but it needs to be done right. Indians are vegetarian for religious reasons, and their version of a vegetarian diet seems to work because they include dairy products and such.Friendly wrote:Vegans are mental. Basically the same as crazy religious types, because their lifestyle is based on faith and not rooted in reality. Humans are omnivores. That doesn't mean you should eat steak every day, but it means we are not meant to live completely without animal products (milk, eggs, etc). Vegans usually suffer from malnutrition, lacking certain minerals and vitamins, which is the reason for their bodies aging faster and them dying earlier. (I'm not talking about vegetrians here).

The solution is to have restrictions on the power of both unions and corporations, not completely ban unions.Muchi Muchi Spork wrote:(Example of a really crap union gone out of control) If I had the money to open up a plant there is no way in hell it would be somewhere that allows unions.

Re: Bye Bye Twinkies
More creative thinking from the top:
BUTBUTBUTBUTBUTBUTThe CEO of Hostess Brands is getting widely criticized for taking his full salary while cutting everyone else's pay by 8%.
Gregory Rayburn will still get his $125,000 a month, or $1.5 million a year, the company told The Huffington Post. His logic is that because he isn't on the Hostess payroll, he doesn't have to take part in the company-wide pay cut.
Rayburn looks at himself as temporary, telling The New York Post he's more like outside help and therefore entitled to his full salary. He said he will leave Hostess when he's no longer needed, the Post reports.
Good God, I love corporate culture. To be fair, Rayburn is taking some measures to rein in his pay. He was eligible to get a bonus of between $375,000 and $1.125 million, but decided to give up the money, The Huffington Post reports. And Rayburn and three other top executives are taking $1 for the rest of the year in pay, but their full salaries will be reinstated in January.
