Game shops/arcades in Singapore/Malaysia
Greetings!
Been a while since my last visit, hope everyone is doing alright. Real life is screwing me at the moment, but I hope to get back to dominating the Toaplan boards later this spring.
Anyway. In roughly a months time I'm making a trip to Singapore and Malaysia. I was hoping to get some tips regarding arcades and games shops in the aforementioned countries. I guess my best hopes is the big cities (Singapore and Kuala Lumpur) but I heard somewhere that there are some arcades in Georgetown as well. We will be traveling around a bit so any tip is welcome.

I visited Malaysia about five years ago and found it impossible to get original games anywhere. Even in huge malls that housed Guchi and Prada shops right below the Petronas Towers they were hawking DVDR copies and back-up cards.
Maybe somebody that lives there know better though.

I can help with this
For Malaysia, I only visited Times Square in Kuala Lumpur last month, but as far as I can remember there's one arcade with Prehistoric Isle and Mahou Daisakusen (I think?) among the few shmups in there. The arcade is pretty big though.
Over in Singapore though, there's a lot of arcades in the central area to cater for modern and old-school games. And there's a couple of shops still selling SNES and Neo Geo games in here. I know cos' I keep buying them out when I actually have money

I'm more familiar with Singapore, so yeah
I'll list the locations by MRT stations (our form of train service), then location, so it's easier for you to pinpoint the locations. If you need any clarifications I can answer them, or even be a tour guide (if I'm free, usually often lol)
Game shops:-
Chinatown - China Square Central: There's plenty of toys and figurines, and one shop sells retro game stuff
Paya Lebar - City Plaza: One shop sells a lot of SNES, Saturn and Neo Geo stuff among others. Sealed. Awesome shop.
Somerset - Orchard Central: There's this shop called Funz Centre. Sells plenty of import stuff. I remember seeing Otomedius Gorgeous going for cheap there.
Arcades:-
Dhoby Ghaut - Plaza Singapura: There's two arcades with a few online services like e-amusement among others. Not much shmups though except KOF Sky Stage and Raiden. D:
Bugis - Bugis Junction: More retro stuff here, with Macross and Strikers there. They just updated with Tekken Tag 2 and Melty Blood Current Code 1.07 too. There's also another hidden arcade behind a departmental store; I usually go there to play Guwange LOL

From Singapore here too. Every shopping centre, except maybe *Scape, has an arcade you can try going to. I live in the West side, but the arcades there are boring. Usually racing, fighting, soccer and family games.
Neko: Hidden arcade? I never noticed that before, where is it exactly?

Im from malaysia. Most arcades in kuala lumpur has raiden dx/2, strikers series. Found one white DOJ in sunway pyramid with non default settings. In penang however, got bakraid, esprade, ddp, and LOTS of ddp2.
It is to us a sufficient body in which, fairies and it is packed and can group of play.

Anyone know of a place in Singapore that sells console shmups? I'm specifically looking for the region-free Cave titles on 360.

Man, I remember playing some good pinball in Penang. ...back in 1980!
And it was in Cameron Highlands that I learned the Space Invaders strategy of destroying your own shields.
Great memories!

Not great by any means, but far better than the shops in Chinatown. The shop at paya lebar was closed when we where there.Neko wrote:Somerset - Orchard Central: There's this shop called Funz Centre. Sells plenty of import stuff.

Re: Game shops/arcades in Singapore/Malaysia
Can the fishing game where you have to pour coins into the slot be considered a shmup?

Re: Game shops/arcades in Singapore/Malaysia
Well.. judging that the fishes are the ones who avoid your shots, I doubt so. On the topic of coins, didn't they replace it with the card system after Singapore's regulations about medal games kicked in?
As far as console shmups go in Singapore, if you are looking at Cave titles, I have only seen Deathsmiles, and even then it was rare to find. Back then when Deathsmiles was released as a port on the 360, those said shops were retailing at $103. This was at AMK Hub, can't remember the shop's name.
I haven't seen any of Cave's other titles around here, I got mine from online sites like Play-Asia. It's really hard to find shmups in Singapore nowadays.

You could ask some of the shops in Funan to see if they can special order it for you. Pretty sure I've never seen them available in Simlim or Funan in my frequent trips over there.ilitirit wrote:Anyone know of a place in Singapore that sells console shmups?
