Best Megadrive / MegaCD / Multimega-CDX / ... as of 2012 ?

Post by akumajo »

Hi,

It has been a long time ... back to video game business !

I would like to know which is the best current combo (video quality and audio quality) to play Megadrive/Mega CD games.
For the Super Famicom / Super Nintendo we all know about the famous 1-CHIP ppu's...

So what are the best models/revisions and mods (if required) ? Tell me (us?) :).

For looks I like the original MD/MCD combo best.

For quality MD1/MD2/CDX are all the same once you do some little tweaks and the right cables.

I don't know if the Wondermega offers raw sync. The available RGB mods used the luma signal from Y/C.

killing the clock signal on the graphics processor and with it the cause for visible jailbars in solid blue.
On MD 1 models you can do an internal stereo mod at the same time.
And finally mod the cable to use raw sync instead of composite video. That's neccessary anyway, if you kill the clock signal.

Not sure how you can say MD2 is the same quality as the MD1. The sound on the MD1 (when using the headphone jack) is considerably better than anything the MD2 console can produce, but in all other departments theres not much between the MD1 and MD2

oh, you're probably right about the audio question. Was totally thinking about video only with my reply above!

I would like to know about Sega CDX / Multimega / Wondermega users.

Does it have the same jailbar problem ?
What about audio vs MG1 and MG2 ?

here's a good guide on the differences between many of the Genesis/Mega Drive hardware variations from our friends at Sega-16:
