Just watch out, a fair amount of them are bootlegs. Most bootlegs lack the pin-7 key though (where the pin is physically cut out), so that's the easiest way to tell. You can also tell by looking at the board itself sometimes; his Hacha Mecha Fighter board itself looks pretty dingy and messed up, so it's pretty likely a boot.

Your assessment is pretty spot on. I don't particularly like Asian girls, but I do make some exceptions for Koreans and maybe Japanese... for the same reasons you mentioned: style and demeanor. They're just very well put together.

I was pretty scared about the Mystic Riders; there's no stickers on the board (obviously there wouldn't be an AMMA one likely, but it *is* at least a World version) but the actual board layout and markings conforms exactly to the M92 standard, so I should be good. At worst it's got some new ROMs in there.

I can't imagine coffee lovers returning to one venue very often, as there are so many interesting places to check out.

A friend of mine has been living over there for a few years now and according to him the coffee there is disgusting. It took him awhile to find even a serviceable coffee place, let alone a good one.

Skykid, if you are desperate for arcades I can draw up a rough map for 2 of them in Jonrogu, a mile or two from where you are. They aren't great places but you'll find some good tekken action in at least one of them and if you ever visit the northern palace region you'll find it an easy detour. Happily my accomodation was more or less next door to one of them, which makes for a civilised way to start the day.

I think Itaewon might have a couple too.

I've found Seoul to be absolutely amazing the several times I've been there. If you end up going to the right places, you should have a lot of fun.

There's not as much there in terms of shmuppy arcade gaming when compared to Japan, though - as other folks have already said, in Korea it's mostly 'PC-bangs'.

Haha, it's worth going regardless. Eye candy, window shopping, furious masturbation, in that order. Almost as good a substitute. Honestly, I haven't been to any clubs and seen who's interested in who, racially, but it's just simple street level observation: there are little to no interracial couples, even in the busiest areas, and there's far less of a general fascination with the lone white dude than there is in Tokyo, which is the best reference.

Actually, he's half right. The first Coffee I had tasted like medicine, and I was wondering if I'd accidentally ordered some special brew. After encountering similar cups several times, I just wrote it off as bad, generally, but then found there are plenty of establishments that serve a much higher grade: Hollys Coffee is a chain that makes a great americano, and some of the smaller independents were surprisingly good. Also, when it comes to sweet stuff, like Hazelnut, caramel, vanilla macchiatos, mochas etc etc, they're pretty first class.

That said, some seriously dumb stuff: I ordered a white americano and the girl looked at me funny. Then she asked her co-worker if they can make it with milk, which was a real wtf moment. He said fine, of course. When I came to collect it, it was in a clear glass, with milk... and about six ice cubes.

I'm going to get to the basement of Yongsan shopping centre, which is where all the retro gaming and PCB bizness is meant to be at. However, I've been warned that whiteys will get robbed, since very little has a displayed price. I know general values of stuff, so I probably won't end up buying anything.

Hyehwa station is in the bottom right corner, so that would be a good starting point. You could use the directions I received to my hostel, that should take you past both arcades:


Take Line 4 (the light-blue line) to Hyehwa station, six stops Northeast of Seoul Station.
At Hyehwa station, take exit 4.
At the top of the steps of exit 4, you will be on a one-lane road with many shops. A Baskin-Robbins should be on your right and The Face Shop on your left. Walk straight ahead for about 3 minutes (600 feet/180 meters). On your right, you will pass a movie theatre and Look Optical (a three-story eyeglasses shop).
At the end of the street will be a large intersection with 7th Heaven Coffee (orange sign) on your right. Turn right.
Cross the five lane street, toward the Dunkin' Donuts (dark red sign).
Walk down the two-lane street, with the Dunkin' Donuts on your left and Daiso on your right, for about 2 minutes (500 feet/150 meters).
*** If you pass a University on your left, you've gone too far.


Nice and easy, it's two straight roads with a right turn past Dunkin Donuts. The northernmost arcade should be very close to a place called PS3 gamer.

My wife is Korean (her parents both moved from S. Korea to Canada when they were in their mid 20s) and Korean food is to die for.

I've always wanted to take her to S. Korea some day.

Dan, thanks for all the info. Unfortunately I just had too much to see in too short a space of time to take on arcade excursions. Next time perhaps, as I'm flying out tomorrow.

I did manage to reach the Yongsan electronics mart and its game related basement. Mostly current gen stuff, plenty of Tekken and some figures. There were only around 3 stalls with any retro stuff, one of which was closed. I found a minty boxed Famicom, but at £140, I passed. I was also tempted by a boxed JP Mega CD in a decent (but not mint) box, but at £109 I decided to pass again.

Other stuff I nearly bought was a Samsung published Story of Thor for MD - I just figured on a Korean memento, but when I got tourist taxed to the tune of £23, I decided to leave it.

In the end I just grabbed a couple of PCE bits, Hani in the Sky (£6) and Travel Epule (£8) on Hu Card and CD-Rom respectively.



Will wrap this thread up with more pics when I get the chance. Next stop, the People's Republic of World Domination.

Funny the mention about Korean girls not liking non-Korean guys, I know a black guy with dreads who went over there and said girls wouldn't stop talking to him.

Maybe it was just fascination.
