System movers
With another console being launched, I'm curious what games have made you buy earlier ones. Not every system purchase is motivated by a specific title, so I'm talking about those times you picked up console because you just had to play one or two particular games.
For me, Super Mario 64 was why I got an N64. I was amazed after playing the in-store demo.
Metal Gear Solid 2 was why I got a PS2. I was really drawn into the PS1 Metal Gear and wanted to see how it continued.
Gradius ReBirth and Castlevania: The Adventure ReBirth are why I got a Wii. Yes, I bought a console focused on motion control because of two games that don't use motion controls.

I got a Gameboy Color just to play Pokemon Blue. After me and my friend worked together to catch all 150 pokemons, I promptly sold it.
Re: System movers
I got an N64 for the same reason, also got a PSX at the same time, but used it as paperweight for many years.
I bought a PS2 for various reasons:
*The neogeo online collection
*Arcade ports (lots of them)
*MGS/Ace Combat/Ridge Racer series
I would like a 360 for obvious reasons.

I got my 64 for Mario 64... and used it for as a paerweight for MANY years. Still have the damn thing. It's been disconnected longer than it's been connected.
Least favorite system ever.

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?
Re: System movers
First system I consciously bought for a single game was the PS1 back in 1997, for Symphony of the Night. It looked absolutely incredible in magazine screenshots at the time, and the notion of Metroid/RPG elements done better than CVII was again intriguing back then.
I technically had a US N64 back at launch, long since gotten rid of with its games, but I got an NTSCJ one recently just to play Sin & Punishment (I prefer playing on original hardware if possible). I'd probably buy a Jaguar to play both of those games. Luckily there are tons and several, respectively, on both PS1 and N64 that I like, but I always think of those games as the centerpieces.
The only true one-system (edit: one-game, rather) machine I ever owned was the 32X for the surprisingly enjoyable Virtua Racing DX. Have tried virtually the machine's entire library and not found a single other game worth playing, let alone owning.

I'll try to do my best. This is purely from memory and most consoles were bought well after the fact:

Current PC - Starcraft II
PS2 - MGS3: Snake Eater
GameCube - Resident Evil 4, Eternal Darkness
Saturn - Enemy Zero
N64 - WWF No Mercy
Genesis - Sonic 2
Sega CD - Sonic CD
NES - Jackal, other childhood memories
Bought for Other:
Wii - For review purposes
Xbox - Just to have the first console I bought myself. Purchased for ease of modding and use as media centre.
Dreamcast - For homebrew purposes
PSX - Just to own
3DO - Just to own
SNES - Christmas gift in 1994
32X - Just to own
TurboGrafx - Came in friend's collection that I bought

I usually bought the cheapest, most accessible console, with little regard to the games it had. First the Famicom, then a Genesis, and finally a PSX.
Haven't bought a console since then. I spent most of my gaming time in arcades and then switched to the PC, because it emulates arcade games. So I guess that was the only time I bought a gaming system for the games it has.

Master System : Shinobi
Genesis : Altered Beast and GnG
SNES : FF, UN Squadron and SGnG
3DO : Samurai Showdown, Super SF2 Turbo, Starblade
Saturn : Panzer Dragoon
PSX : Ridge Racer
N64 : Mario 64
PS2 : MGS2
Xbox : Panzer Orta
PS3 : MGS4
Now I have owned other systems but I bought them just to have something new and await games of interest. Like the Wii, NES, 360.... I didn't pick those up for a single game really.

Master System - Operation Wolf
Not strictly a purchase on my part, it was an xmas present. I bloody loved Operation Wolf in the arcades and my Dad's Speccy was failing, so my parents found an SMSII with Operation Wolf and a light gun packed in. I was about 10 and bloody delighted.
Dreamcast - Shenmue
A couple of solid arcade ports and the promise of PC ports had me interested in the DC but the concept of Shenmue won me over into buying one shortly after it was released.
Saturn - Virtua Cop 1 & 2
Picked this up pretty much to play the Virtua Cop games again, and came across House of the Dead too. Then discovered the joys the Action Replay cart opened up...

Re: System movers
The Space Harrier and After Burner II ports are decent, especially for their time, but I tend to disregard them since I have arcade-perfect versions of the former on PS2 and the latter on Saturn. SW Arcade I always found hideously boring, both at the time and now with stuff like Omega Boost completely obliterating it.Strider77 wrote:I thought Space Harrier and Afterburner were good... Even with the decent PS2 port of Virtua Racing, the 32X one is still worth having for the original cars and tracks, as well as the excellent handling (preferable to the PS2 one despite being digital, I find).

PSX: Gran Turismo. Only after the box was opened did we find out about Metal Gear Solid which became a must buy for me and my dad. Gran Turismo was great, but only after all these years am I finding I like the Japanese versions of the 2 PSX games better. No licensed music to listen to!

Hmmm...
Dreamcast: SoulCalibur (although I didn't end up buying it until they got really cheap after Sega discontinued the system.)
Xbox: Wanted to scalp it, didn't work out so great so I ended up keeping it.
Gamecube: I don't think there was any particular game that stood out, bought it shortly after the price went down to $99.
PSP: Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness (that, and by then it was cheap enough that I could just about buying it for one game.)
DS: Yoshi Touch and Go (although that was selling more on the potential of the system than anything else. Fortunately that seems to have borne out pretty well.)
3DS: New Super Mario Bros. 2 (and aside from that and Mario Kart 7, I haven't really seen anything else to play on it besides my old DS games.)
Xbox 360: Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved (I probably would have gotten one eventually, but that's what convinced me to camp out on launch day for it.)
PS3: LittleBigPlanet, and the Ratchet and Clank games (ironically, I ended up thoroughly disliking LBP once I tried actually playing it...)
Wii: WiiSports, expected Virtual Console releases (it also helped that someone I knew with contacts at Nintendo got a hold of a Wii a couple of days early, so I got a chance to spend a decent amount of time playing it before launch day.)
Japanese Saturn: Radiant Silvergun (which, ironically, I ended up never buying before I sold it off.)
Arcade cab: Raiden Fighters
Dreamcast: SoulCalibur (although I didn't end up buying it until they got really cheap after Sega discontinued the system.)

Re: System movers
Everytime I bought a console for a single game it was a disaster--N64 and Gamecube I'm looking at you. I typically buy consoles half way through their lifespan so I know what I'm getting into. The PS3 I bought for Demon's Souls and that's the rare exception. I mean, I knew there was SF4 (but I was mostly done with fighting games by then), and picked up Ninja Gaiden Sigma blind. Fortunately Demon's and Dark Souls ended up being among my favorite games. Mostly though, buying a console for a single game is BS.

I don't mean these as "hey cool game mentions now" but rather hopefully as representative of what had me interested at the time. My opinion on some of these games has changed; others are still doing pretty well despite being too popular for their own good or whatever.
xbox: Hey Low: Hee Haw Samba and Porky-Pine Quiltin' Challenges
Also Morrowind was a great time waster. The most epic scenes of flight from a provoked cliff racer ever filmed!
These days, Otogi is the first thing I'd go back to play. Tenchu Wrath of Heaven next, probably.
DS: Retro Game Challenge
- had the first two or so Castlevania titles, still unopened, money money mooooney~
- also some other stuff, mostly crap. Works decent as a GBA player I suppose. Really bad as a GB / GBC player, though, which was/is still relevant to me.
- Looking for The Dark Tower, sheesh
psp:
- Have my copy of The 3rd Birthday ready...uh...also this elinmage thing looks neat
PlayStation:
Syphon Filter, MGS? THE TACTICOOL ERA BEGINS
GameCube: The GB Player deal. After a while (soon after?) was followed by a price drop on the base unit so the regular price + GB Player was the same as the initial GC + GB Player deal. What was a good game to get at this time? I don't remember. The system pissed me off for a long while due to its lack of support - until Capcom decided to show up and port almost every RE main series title, and make some pretty good new stuff you might have heard about.
N64: Castlevania: Spider Woman Skeleton Bikers Edition
- GoldenEye, actually. Still haven't beaten Perfect Dark. Why can't people make games like this anymore - and I mean not just port them with some few upgrades to new Nintendo systems I don't give a damn about.
X68000: Come for Dracula, stay for some of the oddest shooting games to grace the earth
Looking forward, I'd like a quieter xbox 360 for a slew of games. Ninja Gaidenz, RF Aces, Bayonetta, etc. Lots of good stuff not on PC or which got some kind of awful port (Ninja Blade oh damnit why)

The 32X version of Virtua Racing is the definitive non-arcade version for me. Also, Star Wars Arcade, I don't like it that much. Shadow Squadron is tons better, pretty hard to do everything in the allotted energy given though.
As for system sellers, I mostly got systems because I hoped good things would come out for it.
The Game Boy Color is the only system I bought for one game -- Pokemon Yellow.
SA1 would have sold me a DC if I could have convinced my parents to buy it at the time [they didn't

Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.
Re: System movers
Nice thread. Time to reminisce.
PC Engine - Chase HQ, R-Type, Vigilante, etc. - was saving up my pocket money to buy an Amiga, and frankly I'd been saving for years (or what seemed like it), whilst holding down two week day jobs plus a saturday morning one (my parents didn't believe in spoiling me). One day, I saw some screen shots of R-Type, Chase HQ, and one or two other games on the back of a mate's C64 magazine, and thought "fucking WANT!". I'd never heard of the Engine at that point, and it looked vastly superior to the Amiga in terms of Arcade GraphicsTM. That, afterall, was its main selling point. I think it was £224.99 or thereabouts, which probably would have been comprarable to the Amiga at the time. Months later, when I'd almost given up on reaching anything like 200 quid of savings within my lifetime, a second-hand PC Engine appeared in the selling section of The Mercury. It was the classic milky bar variant with an RF adapter on the back, and came bundled with Mr Heli, Kyukyoku Tiger, and Chase HQ. Well, I jizzed. For such a thing to appear in the local rag c1987-8 was so unlikely I can only assume some kind of divine intervention occurred. Yes, God came down from heaven and saw to it that I owned that motherfucking console. Mummy dearest gave me a lift to the seller's house, about twenty miles away, where she proceeded to haggle the guy down from his advertised price of £90 (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) to a mere £80 (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). The deed was done, and there was still enough savings for me to go and buy Vigilante and Dragon Spirit from Whizzkid Games. After around a year of basking in the beautiful green envy of my friends, I then exchanged the engine for a megadrive, which in turn became my favourite console of all time. Needless to say, I had the last laugh.

Re: System movers
The only consoles I can recall buying for a single game were the PS and PS2, for Final Fantasy VII and Silent Hill 2 respectively. My brothers got a GameCube so I didn't have to, but I probably would have got one for the RE remake because I knew there would be 1st party games to help justify it after my survival horror fix was had.
Otherwise, I generally had a good list of games in mind prior to buying most of my other systems. Prior to the PS era I wasn't in the know enough to want a specific game; I just knew an SNES would be awesome. Current gen, I generally don't have enough enthusiasm for any one game to make a large purchase just for that. Though, in retrospect Dead Rising really should have been the 360 seller for me.

I got the N64 for Mario 64, and yes it was fun! But my N64 library never expanded beyond that and Mario Kart 64. Eventually I paid around $90 for Sin & Punishment, and that's the only thing I'm keeping the N64 for. The worst part is I just looked yesterday and complete boxed copies of S&P can now be had for $20.BIL wrote:I technically had a US N64 back at launch, long since gotten rid of with its games, but I got an NTSCJ one recently just to play Sin & Punishment (I prefer playing on original hardware if possible).
This is the most disappointing part of my game collection. I have some good games that have kept their value, other good games that are worth nothing, and turds that are worth nothing. How come I don't have any of the turds that are worth hundreds like those getting posted in the ridiculous eBay thread?
BTW BIL if you have the right screwdriver bit, you can just remove the region-blocking tabs from the cartridge slot of a NTSC-U/C system. More cost-effective since the bit costs maybe $3 and a U/C system costs hardly any more than that. Too late now, I guess. The hardest part is getting a controller whose analog stick isn't completely impotent..

Re: System movers
NES
My cousin owned it but I had it for a couple years. I was so sad I couldn't play Megaman games anymore once he took it away
. I had some real cool games like River City ransom and I just loved beating the cash out of guys and buying food with their moneys
.
SNES
My parents bought this for me and my bro. I had Super Mario Bros, MMX-MMX2, SSF2T, Illusion of Gaia and KI. My friend would lend me his games and I got introduced to Zelda A Link to the Past and Super Metroid. I really loved this system but I had really limited access to games.
N64
Bought it on the cheap back in 2006 or so and had it modded with the intention of playing imports like Sin and Punishment, but I never really got into it. It's been sitting in storage for years now. I kinda regret getting it since it's just taking up space.
PSX
My mind was blown away the first time I played FF7 at my friend's house. After I got home that night, I begged my parents to LET me buy one and I continued doing so for weeks until they cracked
. The place I went to to get my system didn't have a big selection, but 2 games stood out, Final Fantasy 7 and Final Fantasy Tactics. I bought FFT since I could borrow 7 from my friend and it had Final Fantasy slapped on it. It's one of the best decisions I ever made since I loved the 2D graphics and went on to try a lot of other 2D gems on the PSX: Castlevania:SotN, MMX4-X5, Star Ocean 2, and Tales of Destiny. PSX rules!!! It's got great games in every genre you can think of even if most of the 3D games haven't aged too well.
PS2
I didn't buy this for any game in particular. My friend pressured me!!! I didn't even know what was good on the system and got Hot Shots Golf 3 with it. The graphics blew me away but I wasn't that trilled about the gameplay. Good thing my friend had a bunch of cool games like Silent Hill 2, ZoE2 and Contra SS. I love my PS2 and even got a backup unit in case my old phat dies on me. It's got great games in every genre, but I think it's sad that the amount of 2D games greatly decreased compared to the PSX. I had high hopes for a new 2D Castlevania and Contra too
. Can't really complain too much though, with games and series like God Hand, Silent Hill, Time Crisis, Contra, DMC, GoW, Persona, and many many other awesome 3D games during it's long lifespan.
GC
I bought my GC for Resident Evil 4 because the graphics were so darned good for its day. There is no game to this day that has impressed me as much as this one did. It alone made it worthwhile for me to have the system since the dev team put their neck on the line
and swore the game wouldn't get released for other consoles. Of course, we all know what happened. The game got released for about everything that can handle it and the GC is sitting there collecting dust. I got some other games but the collection is very modest.
Wii
A gift from my friend as a thanks for getting him a job
. I like it enough. Quite a few light gunners.
DC
Got it free from my cousin. I know some guys swear by it. I don't think it's that great of a system. Maybe I just haven't given it a chance to prove itself. It's there sitting next to my N64 in a box.
GBA
The graphics were really nice when this came out and bought it out of impulse. First game I got was Dragon Quest 3 for the GBA. I think it's got quite a few gems, but it kinda disappointed me. I was expecting it to be as amazing as the SNES was. Sold it and kept some cool games like the MMZ games to play on my DS.
DS
Bought it for Castlevania DoS. I like the system quite a bit. The collection isn't huge for some reason. I guess I'm more of a traditional kinda guy. Gimmicky games don't quite do it for me. Not that it has kept me from owning two of these bad boys.
PS3
I bought it for a bunch of games I wanted to play like Bioshock, Vanquish, Uncharted, GoW3 and Demon's Souls. Not a bad system overall. It's just that it's a huge disappointment compared to the PSX and PS2 and what the hell is it with all the bad ports of games. Next year, there's Bioshock Infinite, DmC, MGR, and The Last of Us. Hopefully, PS3 owners don't get screwed with lesser versions of these games 'cause I'm really looking forward to them. There's just enough exclusives to keep me from ditching the system.
My cousin owned it but I had it for a couple years. I was so sad I couldn't play Megaman games anymore once he took it away

PS2
I didn't buy this for any game in particular. My friend pressured me!!! I didn't even know what was good on the system and got Hot Shots Golf 3 with it. Re: System movers
Holy crap... how could I forget about the PC Engine and DC.
I think the PC Engine is the system I have sold and rebought the most.
1st time (TG16 shortly after the US release) Ninja Spirit and Splatter House
2nd time Y's 1 and 2 along with Spriggan
3rd time Dracula X
4th time Y's 4 and Sapphire
I still have that 4th time Duo RX, now with RGB.
DC... VF3, Sonic Adventure, Sega Rally 2 and whatever else that was on the way. That is the only time I had a Japanese system at launch day. I still have that DC and it was out of the 1st batch that was released in Japan (or released period for that matter). That was really exciting that day. I remember saving cash for it... everytime I was tempted to spend some of it I forced myself to pic up a magazine and flip through the dreamcast articles and game pictures. It worked.

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?
Re: System movers
There have been quite a few times where I've been entranced by a game and have got the console on the basis of this experience.
Mega Drive - Sonic 2
Playstation - Final Fantasy 7
GameCube - Resident Evil 4
Xbox360 - Deathsmiles
iPhone - Cave ports
game Boy - Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening
N64 - Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
GBC - Legend of Zelda: Oracle of whatever
DS - Phoenix Wright
Wii - Twilight Princess sort of
Dreamcast - Shenmue
Can't remember if there were any games in particular that attracted me to SNES, NES or PS2. Strange, as all three consoles have such amazing libraries.

Re: System movers
Only system I ever bought for a particular title was a new 360 to play Halo Reach, after selling my first one a year or two before. Everything else was picked up for the system potential itself.
Re: System movers
Here are the notable ones for me:
- SNES: Super Mario Kart
- Lynx: S.T.U.N. Runner
- Game Gear: Halley Wars
- DC: Crazy Taxi. The DC was a gift, but I'd been coveting CT ever since seeing it in a store
- GBA: Iridion 2 and Advance Wars
- DS: Nanostray, NSMB, Contra 4, and a new Advance Wars
- GameCube: Metroid Prime (and Ikaruga and Planet Harriers were on the horizon, plus I was hearing good things about Monkey Ball. PH ended up getting canned
)
- Wii: Bought it because Prime 3 was getting rave reviews, but they were sold out and I bought Mario Galaxy instead on a whim. I hate Mario 64, and thought Sunshine was only OK, so I was expecting not to like this. But I fell in love with it. Later on, I got Prime 3 and it was awful.
- 486/66 upgrade: Descent and probably some others
- Mac: GarageBand and Unix
And more-recent retro purchases:
- Duo-R: I played Nexzr, thought it was amazing, then found Wolfgames had it for $50 (and not $100 or so as it was often on eBay). Sold!
- Saturn: A friend bought it off eBay, played Daytona for a little, and then sold it to me. During the time the Saturn was being blown out of stores, I'd read about Darius Gaiden (and came close to buying it back then), so that was the first thing I bought for it. I guess the Saturn was still basically current-gen tech at that point (DC was brand new, PS2 wasn't out yet).

Humans, think about what you have done
Re: System movers
Man looking back at all the consoles and systems I've owned... Lets begin
Sega Master System:
Altered Beast
Alex Kid in the Miracle World
Wonder Boy in Monster Land
Those were the games we played before getting an SMS we chose the SMS over the NES
NES:
Contra
Super C
Super Mario Bros
Got this late in it's life and well these are the games that we really wanted to play
Super Nintendo:
Street Fighter II
Super Mario World
These two combined were the first two games our family ever owned and boy I'd have to say that they were the longest two we only owned for a while. Great games and probably my best video game memory to date.
Sega Genesis
Sonic
Yhaa we got the Sonic Bundle. Back then when Sonic first came out it was a hit. Very memorable. Now current Gen Sonic just pretty much sucks compared to back in the days.
Sega Dreamcast:
Shenmue (before it was released)
Soulcalibur
Sonic Adventure
Virtua Fighter 3TB
Dead or Alive (played the demo)
Man when the Dreamcast hit it hit really hard making me really want the damn system. When I first played it at a friends house.. I couldn't believe the graphics. Soulcalibur looked amazing at how gorgeous the graphics were. This alone did not nudge me to go out and pick up a DC. When I heard of the game Shenmue and how big it was going to be I became really excited for the game. I purchased the Dreamcast anticipating that one game and to be honest I was not disappointed with the first release. Wish they continued the series though. Also Sonic Adventure was one of my favorite games. I also loved Virtua Fighter 3 as well. When Arcades were available I got a chance to play this title at local arcades but rarely anyone touched it. Dead or Alive really impressed me with the smooth graphics lol. Game looked gorgeous to bad current DOA games don't interest me as much.
Sega Saturn:
Guardian Heroes
Virtual On Cyber Troopers
Virtua Cop 2
Virtua Fighter 2
Got this system late in its life for pretty much these four games. Guardian Heroes oh man so damn good when you first play it and your wowed by the sprites. Not only that we had the multitap and we had 6 players it was awesome. Virtual On was awesome too I loved Viper the most because that robot mech was able to jump super high lol. Lastly Virtua Fighter 2 one of the best VF games ever!
Playstation:
Tomba!
Rival Schools
Symphony of the night
When I first played Tomba! I was just blown away at how great of a side scrolling adventure this was. This game really impressed and really gave me faith in how that generation of gaming was evolving. Unfortunately not many games can compare to Tomba! even till this day in my opinion. Rival Schools was just great fun and I wish they made a current gen sequel of this game. Symphony of the night back in the days was awesome. Now I get bored of the GBA, DS versions for some reason. Does not have the same charm of games back then. To be honest my last favourite Castlevania game was Super Castlevania IV
GameCube
Super Smash Brothers Melee
Super Mario Sunshine
Zelda Wind Waker
It was either a Gamecube with Smash Bros or a PS2 with Virtua Fighters 4. I chose SmashBros..... sort of regret it because cube had a very small libarray that appealed to me but I still enjoyed the minimal amount of titles that came out for that system like Mario Sunshine and the rest of the Zelda games.
Playstation 2
Virtua Fighter 4 Evo
Bought late in its life cycle and for a number of games but there's just too many so I listed just one. Best possible fighter ever! Virtua Fighter 4 Evolution
Xbox 360
Deathsmiles
Ended up buying this system mainly for shmups. Did it when Deathsmiles was released in Japan. I no longer touch my 360 for mainstreme games. Got my PS3 for that but I play shmups once in a while on the machine.
PS3
Modern Warfare 2
Wife bought for Xmas and did not care for the system or MW2. Until I played the multiplayer then got hooked. Though to myself why am I playing for over 10 hours and not realizing it. Knew then and there I was loving the FPS games. Ended up ditching the 360 and moving my whole library over to PS3. Any games that couldn't be re-purchased on PS3 stayed on 360 and now am a PS3 fanboy
Wii
Gimmick Controls
Zack and Wiki
Bought it because of the Hype and assumptions that the controls would revolutionise gaming. I ended up hating the Wiimote and almost all the games that impimented it. I also had high hopes for Zack and Wiki and turned out hating the damn game. I thought it was too hard... but thats just me
Nintendo DS
Mario Kart DS
I bought the DS for this game and ended up getting a ton more games. System was great fun playing over Wifi. Great memories...
GameBoy Advance
Golden Sun
Mario Kart
Castlevania Circle of the Moon
Three titles I bought when picking up a GBA. Sad thing was I traded my launch PS2 for this.....
That's all I could remember
