Syder Arcade

Post by Shatterhand »

Well, came here believing I would find a thread about this, but found nothing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3BXtgW5oXrY

Must say the game doesn't seem to be really that good judging by the video IMO, but the graphics are awesome.

Those are some features I read the game has:

6 ultra challenging campaing levels
1 survival mode level
3 different starships with different weapons
4 Difficulty levels, from easy to impossible!
Huge capital ships! Protect Green Ray support ship, support Orinoco
cruiser and fight against giant enemies
Online High Scores
20 different retro graphic flavours. Choose among C64, ZX Spectrum
Amiga HAM and many others and dip into a full old school experience

The "Retro graphic flavours" coupled with the intro of that video gives me that old feeling of "Hey, swallow this retrogamer! You will love it, its retro and old school and stuff so its obviously awesome!"

Edit: Also kinda surprised the guys behind this didn't try to advertise the game here.

Edit2: Never mind, I was reading the name of the game wrongly all the time, that's why I didn't find anything about it. Thread closed :D

Edit3: Hmm.. I'll keep the thread open, there's only a thread of this game in the development forum (So the guys actually came here to sell their game, that's a smart move :D). The game is now released, so if anyone tried it out, you can give your impressions.

Looks overly Euroshmuppy. I'd need to hear from someone here who's played it.

Looks so euroshmuppy, I stopped watching 35 seconds in. Nice graphics, yes, but still a euroshmup.
Come check out my website, I guess. Random stuff I've worked on over the last two decades.

Well it isn't forced scrolling, so the dynamic is kind of different than a normal shmup anyhow.

The look and style of the game are enough to have me interested in picking it up, to see if everything else holds up.

I'm... confused, the game looks surprisingly good. I think I need to get my hands on this one.

It looks like I probably would enjoy this if there was no lifebar. What a shame.

In a game like this, with so-called 'six difficulty options' I can almost guarantee you there is an "ultimate" or "insane" mode that has no lifebar.

Woo woo I like this game

It's not an auto-scroller, it's very similar to Defender -- there is a fixed-size playfield that you can move left or right in, and a button flips your direction. No 'wrapping' at the edges though. Couldn't find the button for the hyperspeed jump. But it's interesting to be able to move around the enemies, especially the bosses.

The presentation is extremely slick; the graphics are very polished, and the music is pure tracker goodness. Sound effects are very well done and not annoying or distracting. Selectable resolution from 1024x768 up to at least 1680x1050 (the max for my monitor), with proper aspect ratio.

Gamepad/joystick controls work, but on my 360 pad I have to use the analog stick and there are no options for remapping controls.

There is a "Pure" difficulty mode with 1-hit kills, but since you don't have a life stock this probably isn't the ideal way to play. The game defaults to "Young Gun", which is the Easy mode, but applies a 1/2 end-of-level multiplier (more on scoring further down). "Arcade" is the standard difficulty.

There are no bombs, but you have a special weapon that recharges as you destroy ships. If you don't use it, you can keep charging it up to higher levels for more damage, but you can only fire once before it needs recharging (there's no "bomb stock").

Three ships to choose from; average/balanced ship, fast ship with low armor/weaker weapon, slow ship with high armor/stronger weaper. There are speed and shield pickups, as well as repair and additional weapons (spread shot, homing missle, etc)

Scoring seems fairly straightforward so far; chaining kills increases score per ship (don't see a multiplier/timer but it's obviously there behind the scenes), end of level bonuses/achievements for certain feats/play style (not sure what they all are, it would be cool to have a list) and also a difficulty multiplier.

More impressions as I play some more

I upvoted it cause of it being an STG submission.

Hoping the XOP bundle is submitted. It'd be nice to have those on Steam. And yeah, I realize they'd probably never get the votes needed.

The game is on IndieGameStand for "pay what you want, no DRM" for the next 67 hours. It's not too bad, just play it on the hardest difficulty for nearly 1-hit kills. You can still survive 2 hits from at least some enemy bullets. And it seems it's a newer version than what shmuppyLove played as you can remap controls 'n everything.

#1 in the world yeeeaaahh. Made it about halfway through the last stage. This is a really fun game, though it's still kind of easy even on Pure. But it's fun to circle around enemies and shoot at their asses, which you have to do against some enemies to hurt them at all.

Dev says he will add in a new ship if sales hit 1300 copies, its 1207 now. Game looks like a slower paced Diadra Empty.

I ran into this one on Greenlight a few days ago, searching for shmup. Oddly enough (or perhaps it should be expected) there aren't a lot of hits using that term. :|

Good game, but it has a really bad scoring exploit in campaign mode - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XN4pECKlNOs

Oops, my message is sooooo late. But I played this game when it comes to Steam.
