Decent d-pad for PS2?

The dual-shock d-pad is honestly not all that good, at least for me. Too many blisters on my thumb, and a lack of the nice, precise movement I'm used to on the Saturn.

I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for a controller with a decent d-pad for PS2 shmup action.

One pal of mine on another forum suggested a USB logitech controller. Would this be an optimal route? Do they work on PS2 slims?

Another option would be those Docs Wirless PS1 controllers. But I don't know if those would work with PS2 games, since they lack the 2 analog sticks. They're cheap though.

I know there exists some rare PS2 saturn-pad, and while that would be great, I would hardly want to shell the dough out for that. Arcade joypads/joysticks/whatever those are aren't really doin' it for me either (though they look cool). I'd rather have a solid, dependable d-pad.

correct me if I am wrong, but I find the original non-analog ps1 d-pad the best in terms of value and availability, granted its not a saturn mark2 pad, it still was designed in the same era and right after the snes controller design.

There maybe a possibility that the dualshock2's all analog buttons design may hamper on responsiveness?

You may also try the naki(?) street fighter 15th anniversary controllers? As they are the closest mass produced ps1/2 pad that was modelled after the saturn pad.

The H revision of the PS1 digital pad is the best PS1 pad in my opinion.

Those SF pads are awful quality. There's also the PS1/PS2 Saturn pad which is stupidly expensive and not much better than a regular PS1 digital pad.

Would the Piranha Pad be something worth looking into? It has a pretty chunky-looking d-pad.

I meant the Saturn pad in general. Hugely overrated.

So I think the solution for me, since I'd like to play both PS2 and PS1 shmups, is this:

Does anyone think that'd be a good get to solve my digital pad woes?

There's also, like I said, the Piranha Pad for the PS1, but I'm not sure of its PS2 compatibility. Which is kind of a major thing.

Logitech did two versions of it's PS2 Cordless controller. I bought the 1st production version and it does work like a charm (is powered by three "AA" batteries which adds a bit of heft/weight). The 1st production Logitech PS2 wireless reciever consists of a semi-bulky external 2.4 GHz receiver unit with a wire hooked up to a PS2 controller interface. The MSRP of the original Logitech PS2 Cordless controller was $59.99 back in 2004.

With the 2nd revision, the wireless receiver dongle was smaller and fit directly on the PS2 controller port itself (rather than being an external receiver unit like the 1st production model variant). The 2nd gen Logitech PS2 wireless D-pad controller was constructed a bit smaller as well (and uses only two "AA" batteries this time around).

Gamestop, currently, sells the 2nd gen variant Logitech PS2 wireless D-pad controller + accompanying receiver unit for a mere $19.99 nowdays (in used condition).

My vote is also for the SF pad. I've found it to be high quality, and especially if you have larger hands it is really comfortable. Everyone likes to have a little extra girth in their hands.
