We never had these in the UK. That part in GhostBusters was really confusing to us.
Re: Bye Bye Twinkies
There is a good chance another company will dive in and take over, thus saving our beloved twinkies from extinction... if this were not to happen, I'm very tempted to buy a few cases to auction off 20 years from now (they'll still be good, right). mmmm cakey-creamy deliciousness, i actually haven't had a twinkie in a long ass time, maybe I should get some before it's too late.

KAI: Imagine if you took a piece of bread and just soaked it in corn starch. Then you put some stale whipped cream on it and eat it while it's still wet.
I'm with Drum on this one.

Yea, like I saw these Ritz crackers in the supermarket a while ago, on the box they were marketed as 'Limited Edition'. ZOMG shouldn't shmups forum be going nuts over these? chempop it would be pretty cool to say down the road that you were able to retire on a box of Twinkies eh?chempop wrote:There is a good chance another company will dive in and take over, thus saving our beloved twinkies from extinction... if this were not to happen, I'm very tempted to buy a few cases to auction off 20 years from now (they'll still be good, right). mmmm cakey-creamy deliciousness, i actually haven't had a twinkie in a long ass time, maybe I should get some before it's too late.

I haven't eaten one of those mostly-not-food products in decades.
In any case, they're going to sell off the brands, so Twinkies will live on.

Re: Bye Bye Twinkies
Twinkies Factoid: A typical plain-vanilla Twinkie weighs in at a modest 150 calories whilst a deep-fried Twinkie will set you back at a whopping 500 calories! At the yearly California State Fair, there's a booth that sells such deep-fried Twinkies at $5.00 a plate for two of them. A Twinkie bought seventeen years ago will still taste the same -- so on the average, it'll last about seventeen years give or take if not removed from it's plastic wrapper.
Back in the early 1980s, the old timers will recall those other snacks made by Mickey's and Dolly Madison in addition to Hostess and Rainbo snacks. Eventually Hostess bought out Dolly Madison and they sold the Dolly Madison Zingers snacks under the Hostess brand name moniker.
Even in Japan, such Hostess snacks were nowhere to be found. Luckily, I brought a whole box of Twinkies with me to tide my cravings for some during my two week stay there back in early 2000.

As of right now, Hostess just recently introduced chocolate flavored Twinkies for the 2012 year, something new in the Twinkie snack world indeed. I bought a box of chocolate Twinkies on a whim and found it to be quite tasty.

Re: Bye Bye Twinkies
There used to be a time when it was possible to buy the Hostess Chocodile snacks in the Golden State of California - basically a Twinkie enrobed in dark chocolate coating. It's still sold back East & in the South.
Hostess for a limited time also released strawberry flavored Twinkies sold in a box of 12 or as an individual snack paired size format.
Every so often, Hostess would have those limited deals of buy two, get the third one free with their 3 Twinkie pack deals -- basically at the same price if getting an individual Twinkies snack (comes two to a pair).
Even in the Zombieland flick, the lead character says he's gotta have his beloved Twinkies...the never ending quest/search for them continues on.
During the Great Recession of 2009-2010, the Oakland, CA based Mother's Cookies plant went under. Luckily, Kraft Foods ended up buying/rescuing most of the beloved Mother's Cookies recipes and bringing them back on store shelves under the Nabisco brand moniker. Sign of the times, folks. So for a little while, it wasn't possible to buy such Mother's Cookies due to them not being made.

Re: Bye Bye Twinkies
If you want, KAI, I can send you a box of Twinkies for you to try out. It's just the shipping will be a bit on the expensive side if shipping via International Priority Mail method or even EMS shipping method. I once shelled out $75.00 to ship some homemade pesto sauce to Japan and it got there in two days. It was well worth it in the end.
It's still possible to buy Hostess products right now until it runs dry and that's it. I'm definitely going to buy some boxes of Twinkies tomorrow. Tis a shame that Hostess is going down big time. Oh well.
The American food company, Sara Lee, was eventually sold to the Mexican food giant, Bimbo, for a good chunk of money and still continues to make Sara Lee products sold in the USA. If that particular deal hadn't happened, Sara Lee would've been no longer in business as they were struggling during the Great Recession as well (plus the fact that they were looking for a potential buyer also).

Re: Bye Bye Twinkies
Um, doesn't Grupo Bimbo already sell their own version here in the USA, Submarinos? They probably will corner the market given that they already own Entemann's and Boboli.
Kai, I thought that Bimbo also sold their products in Argentina. Aren't they available in your region?

I think it was just not to long ago that Sara Lee made a deal with Grupo Bimbo and the rest is history. The American food industry is surely going through some major changes in the 21st century indeed if it is to remain viable for the foreseeable future.

Re: Bye Bye Twinkies
while I've never eaten one, from a young age these objects always fascinated me after I heard them mentioned in DK 'I Fought The Law' in reference to TwinkieGate.
Re: Bye Bye Twinkies
Thanks PCEFX, but I'm not that desperate.
Yup, there's Bimbo here and I think they are selling Submarinos, must find them!
BTW, the Bimbo bear and Pedo bear logos look alike.

Re: Bye Bye Twinkies
It's no problem, KAI. Just a single bite of a Twinkie and you're hooked (or least a sample taste of a famous American snack cake).
There's a cookbook out there that duplicates almost the same taste as the Hostess Twinkie but using grocery store bought ingredients. I'll have to search for that particular cookbook and see what it entails. From what I can recall, you use a pastry bag to pipe in the white creamy filling in three seperate spots of the golden sponge cake itself.
Yes, it's common to find Bimbo's Submarinos at the local Mexican grocery store outlets in California. Quite uncanny with both logos sporting bears there.

The first thing I thought of on opening this thread was Vic Mackey stealing Dutch's Ding-Dongs, with CCH Pounder telling Vic to "give the man back his ding dongs!"
