Shmup/Twin Stick hybrid Compromised

Post by pjchardt »

Hello all,

Myself and one other guy have been working on a game called Compromised for over a year now. We released it on the XBLIG marketplace back in May but have been continually working on it and we just started selling the PC version as a beta on our site as well as Desura and IndieCity.

There is a trial of our game on our website: Compromised site

Our game is a hybrid of shmup and other elements. You play as a ship called Aero that loses communication from base during an invasion and must get back to the core and re-establish communications.

I would love feedback here on everything from the demo, to the website, name, screenshots, etc.  Any and all feedback is welcome!

To kick off here is the trailer we made for the XBLIG release of Compromised Trailer

And here are some screenshots:

I would like to give a few people some free codes for the game either to download direct from our site or Desura, but it would be great if you would give us some comments and feedback on here after playing it.

If you are interested please message me.

Thanks

Alright, I played through the demo. I do like how you're trying to combine both traditional shmups and twin stick shooters, but it doesn't quite work. I don't really see a need to see the "incoming wave" and "x enemies remaining" -messages, they seem like leftovers from the twin stick side that aren't really necessary here. And since the stages aren't autoscrolling, it was pretty easy to just hang back, go in to take a few shots at the cannons and whatnot, then retreat to safe distance whey started shooting back. I could even go back and refill my health while at it, since there were so many of those floating around.

Also, I put the difficulty to Expert right from the start and it was way too easy, only a couple enemy bullets managed to hit me, my health bar never came even close to being depleted. And I could just put up a Shield and negate the effect of those few hits anyway. Maybe it gets harder later on? That "four red things in cardinal points"-boss looks nice.

The demo's boss fight was pretty cool with its many forms. Is there a Boss Rush mode in the full version? That'd be neat. I like environmental hazards in my shmups and this one seems to have them, and the bosses in the trailer look pretty cool.

Can't say too much about the upgrade system since there were only a few stages so I don't know if it'll end up breaking the game, but buying upgrades this way is pretty uncommon in shmups for a reason. I'd like to see an "arcade mode" where the ship will be destroyed by one or two hits (one hit if you make the enemy bullets stand out just a bit more) and no upgrades at all. And generally being harder.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Hey. It took me a bit to respond, but thanks for the feedback! Yes the game occupies a strange space between twin stick arena shooter and shmups. The game does get significantly harder later on. Overall most people respond that the game is really hard. Now there is a caveat there. For shmup players it may not be as challenging.

Glad you liked the boss. We put a lot of work into all of our boss battles. Having a boss rush mode would be a really cool addition to the game.

Thanks a bunch!
