Vert shmup jammas with rotary joystick?
I'm getting a Time Soldiers JAMMA arcade cabinet and was wondering if I could play vert shmups on it. The cabinet uses an "8-way Rotary [Turn]" joystick and I'm not entirely sure what that means in comparison in regular 8 way sticks.
Re: Vert shmup jammas with rotary joystick?
If it's what I think it is, you'll have a hell of a time playing nonrotary games on it. Assuming it's similar to a stock gyruss stick, the physical movement is weighted towards the outside of a circular restrictor plate, so it'll "stick" for a bit if you try to quickly move from left to right and diagonals will be inconsistent.
Dimahoo is a fun game.

I seems to be like a Ikari Warriors stick. You should be able to wire it so the rotations are ignored, and you are left with an 8-way joystick.
Re: Vert shmup jammas with rotary joystick?
Oh, I see, the joystick itself acts as a spinner. I've never seen that usage before.

No need to re-wire anything. U,D,L,R goes to JAMMA. Rotory portion has it's own harness, so you just don't hook those to anything on other games.antron wrote:You should be able to wire it so the rotations are ignored, and you are left with an 8-way joystick.

Re: Vert shmup jammas with rotary joystick?
I used to play Time Soldiers back in the day at my local Tilt! arcade hangout.
The other arcade PCBs that use such a pair of LS-30 based arcade rotary joysticks would be as follows:
Gondomania
Heavy Barrel
Guriella War
Ikari Warriors
Ikari Warriors 2: Victory Road
Ikari Warriors 3
Time Soldiers
SAR - Search And Rescue (a rare SNK shooting game)
Midnight Resistance
Time Soldiers Factoid: It was the U.S. arcade licensee, Romstar, that got the exclusive rights to distribute such Jamma conversion kits of TS (complete with a back-lit full sized marquee) stateside.

I thought Cal .50 had its own slightly different sticks?

Yeah, all those listed games, at one time or another, I've played at the local arcades and was retrived from the ol' noggin of mine.
Yes, I forgot about Cal .50 as being another arcade rotary-based shooter...I've played that one as well at this one local arcade hangout called "Cals-R-Cade" back in the late '80s era. It was configured to accept tokens rather than quarters as the proper choice to credit up a game.
Thanks for adding that final arcade rotary game entry, undamned.

CAL.50 uses optical rotary sticks and isn't compatible with the LS-30.
Full list of rotary stick games
ADK (all use LS-30)
Vertical: Battle Field (aka Time Soldiers)
Athena (Optical Rotary, only Witness is compatible with both types of sticks)
Vertical: CAL.50, Witness (aka Mokugeki aka Downtown)
Data East (all use LS-30)
Vertical: Apocalypse Warrior (aka Makyou Senshi aka Gondomania)
Horizontal: Heavy Barrel, Midnight Resistance
SNK (all use LS-30)
Vertical: Bermuda Triangle (not the US rev), Guevara (aka Guerilla War), Ikari, Dogou Souken (aka Victory Road), Ikari III, S.A.R., T.A.N.K (aka TNKIII), World Wars (aka US Bermuda Triangle)

It is indeed a rotary game (all agreed on that), but you can remain content that you didn't omit a game that uses the LS-30 joysticks, because it uses the "loop 24" sticks, not the LS-30.
Some other folks went down this path before: "The joysticks look similar to the LS-30 variety used for games such as Ikari Warriors, Heavy Barrel, and Time Soldiers, but they are different. The Loop-24 joysticks have a four-pin connector on the bottom of the stick that connects directly to the game board."
And the KLOV page for completeness' sake.

There better not be an animated gif of this floating around, if that's what you mean.

Dirty mind, you.Ed Oscuro wrote:There better not be an animated gif of this floating around, if that's what you mean.
The stick I have is home made and works on both types of boards. Some may not like it though as it doesn't have the stiff clickiness of the LS-30.

24 hour party people! That's pretty neat. Is there total pin commonality or partial?
Arcadecontrols mentions a few other games: Exterminator (Gottlieb maybe? Seems familiar) and a Top Gunner (Jackal) bootleg for the LS-30, and two Loop-24/Happ Rotary sticks - both Touchdown Fever games.

Exterminator is by Taito and just a normal JAMMA game. Never seen that Top Gunner boot.Ed Oscuro wrote:24 hour party people! That's pretty neat. Is there total pin commonality or partial?

Touchdown Fever I and II use an optical rotary different from the CAL.50 one I thought. Can't be bothered with American football games

Yeah, I know that one. Been meaning to get the board sometime. They're talking about the Gottlieb game, name of "Exterminator." Odd game, not well known. It controls badly for me (no rotary setup, and mouse isn't ideal either).Shou wrote:Exterminator is by Taito and just a normal JAMMA game.

I'm getting a good lesson in hardware here! Any opinions on whether 19 inches is an acceptable monitor size for playing vert shmups? I understand a common Raiden 2 cabinet runs at 25 in.

Re: Vert shmup jammas with rotary joystick?
If you can spring for a 27" monitor setup (referred to as a 29" monitor size in the USA), it affords plently of eye-candy to behold on them candy cabs. I've noticed with Capcom's Sidearms PCB (a horizontal screen oriented based shmup title), if played on a 27" monitor setup, it seems too big and would be better suited on a smaller arcade monitor size 19" to 25" and much easier on the eyes.
