More importantly, can anyone recommend general places of interest for a gamer, such as arcades, shopping spots, and other cool tourist destinations?

Take a tour of the DMZ!
But do one of the RSO tours (run by the US Army), the other tours are crap and you won't get to leave the bus at Panmunjom (the divided village). And remember that you need to buy your ticket from the RSO one day before you actually take the tour.
Also go to Yongsan electronics market.
Game-wise I never found anything too interesting in Korea. There are some arcades around the central station, but they're not as nice as Japanese ones, and gaming seemed centered more around the PC-bang (internet cafes).
Best thing about Korea is the movies and the food.

Language pleasing to the ear. I really liked what I've seen (and heard) of Korean women too. I also read South Korean Tekken scene has no real competition (even in other computer-centric countries where PSX was the first really popular, up-to-date console).
Though the image of their Tekken scene I have isn't that of a "game center", but someplace where dudes meet to play on consoles (then again, I'm a far cry from any "scene" at all).

We don't have so many (any?) street vendors in Tokyo. Re: just landed in S.Korea
There's a lot of hotties in Korea, because women there tend to care a lot more about looking good and dressing well (and that includes pastic surgery).Obiwanshinobi wrote:I really liked what I've seen (and heard) of Korean women too.
However, 99.9% of Korean women have absolutely ZERO interest in non-Korean guys.
Re: just landed in S.Korea
Really? There are many Koreans in my city, yes even the women here are very good-looking. But the two who I pursued both said they don't like Korean guys, and for the same reason - they said that Korean men are very rude??
Anyway, obviously I didn't have any luck with either of them, and the Koreans definitely do stick together amongst themselves. My love will probably eventually end up marrying a Korean husband after all

Re: just landed in S.Korea
There used to be tons, mainly Israeli, and they generally sold jewelry. They got rid of them (law) in about 2000... shortly before they magic mushrooms became illegal, which was of course the saddest street vendors to lose. They also had to pay the yaks, so maybe they just said fuck it and left.rancor wrote:Skykid wrote: We don't have so many (any?) street vendors in Tokyo. Re: just landed in S.Korea
I recommend going to see a few non verbal stage shows, koreans do a great job with these. Arirang, Jump and especially Nanta are all very entertaining. As a whitey there's a good chance you'll be dragged up on stage during the audience participation bits, great fun.
The little mountains in Seoul are cool - Namsan gives a fabulous view in the evening and Inwangsan has excellent ruggedness and some authentic buddhist action, all within a few minutes of the Seoul metro.
Also I recommend checking out Seoul's cafe scene, they have some very cool places. Most of all (and I'm sad to say that I walked up to the place and then chickened out) a visit to the cat cafe looks like an essential experience: http://www.world-walk-about.com/norther ... afe-seoul/

Re: just landed in S.Korea
Thanks mulletgeezer and CIT for the recommendations. There's a 4D cinema around the corner and I'd love to make it to the DMZ if I get the chance.
Seoul is pretty awesome actually, I like it more than the negative press lead me to believe I would (voted the most boring capital by some survey or another.)
It's got much in common with Tokyo in terms of commercial build up fused with the quaintness of older backstreets and lack of urban planning. That said, it's a lot more tranquil than Tokyo and China, because it's not rammed with so many people. It's quite comfortable to that end, although Cheongdam district is pretty youthful and crazy on a Friday night.
I'm reminded why the Asian diet is so rewarding - there's so much healthy, great food, and varied too. As long as you steer clear of all the western steakhouses and fried chicken (although Korea has its own speciality fried chicken, which is interesting) you can eat well and feel better as a result.
Korean girls take a lot of pride in their presentation, and generally they come across as attractive without being slutty. To put it into perspective, there's not a wild variation of fashions: it's usually a sophisticated look with black tights and nice heels, tousled hair and funeral home foundation.
In Japan attractiveness is measured in cuteness, whereas here not so much. If you like girls with a babyish look and disposition, Japan is where you go (for all you kiddy fuckers), China is a kind of middle ground with tons of variation cross provinces, and Korea for a more womanly, elegant type.
However, I don't know about anyone else, but I find Korean women particularly easy to spot. They all look extremely similar to me, and a lot of it is because they all go to the same plastic surgeon. Seriously, there's not a flat bridged nose in the entire country. This is why there's such a large proportion of girls who look very similar to each other, and TV stars too.
But:
I did see one (one!) interracial couple, but it was a white chick with a Korean guy. Go figure.

The food is great. Korean's don't fuck about when it comes to spice either, I asked a street vendor for some hot sauce and it was volcanic, and I'm usually pretty good with spice.rancor wrote: We don't have so many (any?) street vendors in Tokyo. But:
All evidence points to this being true. Although I'm not hitting on chicks, it's not like Tokyo. I'm usually the only whitey in the area around here, and no-one gives a shit, which is actually kind of nice for Asia. I partly think a lot of it comes down to having far less foreign influence in commercial advertising and media: K-Pop stars are really where its at here. Occasionally you still see a western movie star promoting something, but it's not like Japan, it's far more domestically oriented. As such, I think all those Korean hotties with nose jobs and tattoo'd eyeliner are probably out of reach.CIT wrote:However, 99.9% of Korean women have absolutely ZERO interest in non-Korean guys.

Re: just landed in S.Korea
Went for an evening stroll around the Wangsimni area last night, where my hotel is based, and found myself in a zen like state of peace. It was buzzing for Saturday night, but never crowded, and this area is a goldmine for interesting backstreets, night markets, drinking parties and extreme cafe culture. I can't imagine coffee lovers returning to one venue very often, as there are so many interesting places to check out.
I love the quaintness of the older streets, the way a business is fashioned out of whatever hole in a building happens to be there. There are some issues where the sewer is a little close to street level, resulting in some unpleasant smells (China the same - I think Japan has solved this issue) and I don't dig the spitting thing. Chinese and Koreans share this habit. It's not like hot girls hawk up all the time... but then I think it's an act more common amongst the older generations.
Also, there are no arcades here that I can find. Sad thing indeed.
