I didn't vote this election or the last one. I'm a democrat, but there's no way WV is going to elect a black guy who's against coal. So, why waste my time? I'm glad he got in though.

Funny, considering that the Dow approximately doubled its value from its recession-low point during Obama's first term...strange how Wall Street didn't seem to feel very threatened all that time. You want a real threat to our financial well-being? Start with the conservative hardliners in Congress who refused to undergo a routine debt ceiling procedure to the point that it downgraded the nation's credit rating (but still want to cut taxes for rich people, because there's no better way to save money than that...as Reagan and Bush alike have already proved beyond the shadow of a doubt).

You're not surprised because the brunt of that hit fell on banks, energy companies, and defense contractors, all of which were particularly expected to benefit from a shift to a Romney administration, and so lost a fairly solid chunk of speculative value in after-hours ECN trading after the election was called for Obama, which triggered further sell-offs once the markets opened?

Oh, and HP apparently also had a really shitty analyst day today, which probably had fuck all to do with the election.

I'm just spitballin' here; let me know if I'm getting close.

The interesting thing is that Obama was a favorite 70%/30% on InTrade by about 5PM Pacific Time. So, with hours to go, people that were betting (literally) on the event, were already picking Obama as their horse.

My sympathies with you. But you can at least vote for the state's own Democrats, even if they are borderline certifiable.

I think Sen. Byrd's comment about WV being the "rock bottomest of places" will become true after all the mountains have been pulled over to get at the coal inside. Clean energy would be a good thing right now. Unfortunately my state didn't spring for the 25% clean by 2025 (right now it's at 10%), and I'm not sure if the utilities wiggled out of being able to institute further rate hikes, or whether we dodged a bullet where they could lock in the higher prices (this state has the highest energy costs in the Midwest, and higher than average for the nation).

Gosh. I don't remember the USA being a warzone under religious law these last four years. It's not like the Bush and Clinton terms were a happy 1950's sitcom, either.

Well, I was positive the Dems would win everything else, in the state. The last time a Republican got it for Governor, was when a woman was the Dem nominee. We're a real forward thinking state.

And yeah, besides coal, we have nothing. Nothing at all. Most people who don't want to work in mines go to North Carolina or some neighboring states. What's left is a bunch of uneducated rednecks. And me.

The markets decided that more quantitative easing was coming, supposedly (that's what I heard, I already said this), so U.S. currency fell.

The odds on Obama winning should have been more like 85%-15%. Maybe a bunch of people were Romney campaign staffers using their internally "tweaked" numbers? :| I think that's a pretty good ratio, though, given that some portion (hopefully a slim one) was calling it even odds just out of spite (or ignorance, or both).

There's a compilation video going around (posted to my FB by an Aussie friend, no less) showing the usual suspect predicting a Romney landslide just days before the election. The first one had some jackass on the phone predicting 330+ EVs for Romney, and Glen Beck immediately agreeing.

The shocking thing is someone actually recorded Glen Beck in any form, other than for SNL research.

yeah - I heard about this one too, but then I thought it's really no big deal - I can probably survive the rest of my life on the porn produced between 1985 and yesterday and never see the same title twice. It's not as if there's any taboo unexplored, or any orifice that remains un-fucked. What direction could they possibly go tomorrow that would make anyone see the difference between 2008 porn and 2013 porn?

yeah - that's what I heard too. Porn production is going to move to Las Vegas since that where a lot of porn stars live and make money from their "side businesses".

They're going to sue to try and overturn the condom law. Besides, it only applies to LA county. They can drive to Ventura or Orange and bypass the requirement. I don't know how much it will really affect them. On a side note, I think it's interesting that only two states have laws legalizing the production of porn: California and New Hampshire. New Hampshire should court the industry: Film Condom Free or Die. It'd make a hell of a license plate.

correct. tax on the moderately wealthy and higher, plus an increase in sales tax (which I was not happy about as it will disproportionality affect the poor). I voted for it anyway, you know, FOR THE CHILDREN!
