Amazingly educative kusoplay here:

Short summary: a below-average-skill player keeps rank at near-initial level, breaks chains, strategically bombs/hypers through everything remotely difficult, suicides just for the sake of it, and still gets 10 billion. Moral of the story? Any half-decent player should be able to repeat that result with very little effort in a matter of days, at most a couple weeks, given easy access to the game. Come on guys, give my hi-score thread some activity when this comes out!

Hey waitaminute, didn't stage 2 originally take place on Mars or something? And does that guy start the game fully powered (I never see him/her pick up a power item, and only one bomb item before the st2 boss)?

EVERYTHING IS LIES.

Based on the videos I've seen I kinda like the original better (less loli lol), but who am I to complain? :D

It'll be fun to watch some of the 1CCs of this game, considering the sheer number of shit it throws at you.

By "original", do you mean DDP? I actually think SDOJ throws even less bullets at player on Shot/Laser mode. There are more medals than bullets in this video in particular.

Nice videos but that is not a below average player and neither will one be able to clear this game in 2 years let alone 2 weeks. Maybe if they make the difficulty less on the port or if they play the novice mode.

If he calls himself below average, that's just how a lot of Japanese people are. Like when Galford got the world records in Pink Sweets and then wrote that he thought he sucked at the game or when Ikeda always says to himself "I'll never be able to make a game that good so I won't try" and then proceeds to make the best game ever.

The player himself might not be below-average, but he deliberately plays the game in cheesiest ways possible, going as far as to suicide "just because", and makes no difficult dodges. Not a single one! In fact, his route seems particularly geared towards dodging as little as possible at the expense of a lower score, which is evident in st3 midboss, late st4 and pretty much entire st5, where bombs and hypers are timed to the harder spots, not the most lucrative ones in terms of score.

Clearing it that way should be no harder than doing the same to Futari 1.5 Original, and that one is considered average difficulty; you just need to learn the route and bomb/hyper whenever you're not feeling confident. The abundance of large medals and bullet-canceling enemies in stage 5 should provide plenty of resources for panic hypering.

It's way harder. I've cleared over 90% of Cave boards (at least 1 loop) including Original mode on all 3 Futaris and Maniac on 1.5 and BL. SDOJ is crazy hard to clear. It makes DFK 1.5 Bomb and Strong 1st loop look like Deathsmiles. A-S is the easiest on the board because it creates the most slowdown. I'm not sure that kind of slowdown accuracy will even pass down to the port. But good luck, and the game is worth getting even if you suck at it. It's really, really fun.

A vid showing the result of somebody's attempt—probably SWY's, as he's playing SDOJ with C-Ex—to max-out rank on Expert: http://www.nicozon.net/watch/sm19119173

Looks terrifying. One of the hardest things I've seen, close to Futari 1.01 Ultra in terms of speed×density. A full playthrough in this manner would be great to see on a superplay DVD if scoring on Expert didn't involve playing it safe and hoarding hypers until stage 5.

Got a chance to play this yesterday at Frenetic's shmupmeet. Definitely hard, and I enjoyed the time I spent with it. However, the sound quality on the PCB is utterly abhorrent and makes me want to stab my ears so that I can't hear anymore. Also, while I do like the game, I don't feel like it's really worth the exorbitant price for the PCB, even if the sound quality was better.

I don't know how many people on this board have had a chance to play it, but how hard is this game compared to DOJ? I think I hit my ceiling with that game.

To me it's way harder than the first loop of DOJ (never played the second loop) and what's more annoying is that making progress in it feels slower than it has ever been for me in a Cave game. You get fairly far the first day you play it i.e. stage 4 but it's a trick, you are just stuck there over and over. But I'm starting to think the difficulty isn't even person to person in some Cave games. I've heard people say Progear no Arashi is one of Cave's hardest and I find it to be one of their easiest, for example.

Agree with MMS. I own both PCBs, and with the amount of time spent I've gotten much farther in DOJ than SDOJ. Lately I've been playing a lot of SDOJ, and it's just brutal starting midway through stage 4. I still haven't completed it. I can almost do the first loop on DOJ and I have much less time invested in it.

At this point I do have to ask why you would even want to turn a giant robotic alien bee with immense, incalculable power into a frail little girl.

Like, it's like Longhena saw Zatsuza, and said "No, this won't do. Put this on the backburner for now. We need something more moe."

"Sir this is already pretty intimidati-"

"NO GODDAMMIT I NEED MORE LITTLE GIRLS TO FUCK"

I love Cave and have nothing against the loli aesthetic, but I can't help but having thoughts of extreme disgust when something like this is related to the next big shmup release:

This is ridiculous.
Dammit, how I miss the manliness of DonPachi.

I wonder how long the loli stuff will continue though. It's getting really boring and repetitive.

Am I the only one who didn't mind DOJs use of Loli? I always found tastfully eerie in the same way that Ghost in the Shell ended with the cyborg shell of a small girl staring at the camera. Especially with the level complete artwork showing them half constructed - keeping the heavy steel feeling of DDP alive.

Since DOJ though, we seem to be getting dangerously close to upskirt territory instead of "creepy cyborgs"

I haven't really minded it much but I'm starting to now. It definitely fit greatly in the Deathsmiles series but I think it's time to move on now. It's done to death.

I wonder how many people wander up to the machine for the first time, drop their money in, and think "hmmm.... I'll pick the one in the bikini because duhr" and proceed to get bent over. It's a great way to make some easy money off of dopes, so i'll give cave that. But yeah, i'd like less lolis as well.

I generally don't care, as long as the game mechanics, music, and overall presentation are solid (all of which I'm already digging).
I'm not a big fan of it being "moefied", but I can look past it pretty easily as long as the game kicks my ass to hell and back.

As I mentioned, nothing against lolis here as well.

But the contrast has clearly gone out of bounds.
A bad-ass bullet hell aimed at REAL MEN, but with female skinny barely clad lolitas as ship pilots?

To an outsider this sounds retarded.

I tend to agree with this kind of stuff but in this case, CAVE played their cards deviously.

Did you check the SDOJ site? Your pilot IS A MANLY MAN BANGING THESE GIRLS. (edit: and the operator) These thingos aren't the ship pilots, you are a DUDE (c) in a manly ship and those are your sex-dolls or something. Apparently, co-pilots. :P

http://www.cave.co.jp/gameonline/saidaioujou/

See? WAIFU IS MEIDO. CAN'T TOUCH THIS!

Everything changes when you look it from another perspective, right? :D

Jokes aside, man, that design really looks like a reject from Death Smiles.

That's an interesting thought, probably valid to Japan and the shmup community as a whole.

However, I tried to picture myself showing this to some non-shmupper friends and having to explain what it's all about.
I just couldn't do it.

I will remember this next time the guy I work with goes off on a "it's all little girls and upskirts.. its creepy" in response to recent Cave games. I can now ease his mind by telling him it's all okay, because you're not playing as an underage loli... you're a manly dude in a robo suit giving it to them good and proper.

If anything is going to shatter his perception that japanese shooters are for pedos, that'll definately be it!

Good times.

(Really, "outsiders" think it's creepy and perverse. It'll only pull in young cartoon fapping enthusiasts)

edit: Kai's signature basically says it all. In my opinion, so long as there's this much loli - that will always be the perception :(
